They could've also picked up Van Bommel for free this summer!

expect a 10m bid then

is it true de jong was available for only 2.3m in the summer because of a clause in his contract? wow if true....hsv did great business:D

Yes, that is very true. This is why I'm calling Man City such idiots!

HSV were offering deJong new deals, but he wasn't taking them.

The reason I think the 20M was so stupid was because of the clause.

I think they could have offered HSV 8-12M and they still would have had a deal.

People here in Germany love to raise such a stink about Hoffenheim, but at least they aren't just throwing money around because they can.

Again, I'm very happy for HSV. But of all the clubs with rich sponsors, Man City are the ones who will probably do true damage to the game.

Hamburg does something right or is lucky, that some English teams
are stupid enough to buy average, but hyped player for enournmous sums.

My club is sleeping currently. KA, wake up and market
Sanogo as the new Drogba and Tosic as the next Vidic.

It was written everywhere in the German press in the weeks before ManCity entered the picture that de Jong and HSV had verbally agreed on a new deal (3+m/year or so, with a 13m exit clause).

De Jong wasn't suddenly going to break his agreement with HSV who he had a good relationship with, so this story is nothing other than more of that sour grapes sheikh-bashing going on all over the British media this week after the Premier League was humbled by Kaka.

EE, de Jong wasn't even really "hyped." They just decided they wanted him and threw money at HSV.

I wouldn't say "English Clubs" in this thing.

Sure, you can point at what Man U. paid Bayern for Haregreaves, but Bayern also didn't want to sell Hargreaves. Man U. paid more than market value to get the player they wanted.

Man City didn't need to do any such thing.

Just about everyone who followed his situation knew Nigel de Jong was waiting for that clause to kick in to move to a bigger club next season with that cheap fee.

Had the idiots at City done their homework, they would have seen that HSV probably would have taken a high single digit offer for de Jong too.

But City, thinking they are big shots, jumped straight to the "offer they can't refuse" category instead of checking to see how much they needed to pay.

To me, that is the disgusting part. I don't hate that City has almost unlimited resources. The Sheiks chose them and that's life. Just shows the Sheiks don't know dick about football.

What I hate is that they are throwing that money around without a care in the world.

Even Abramowich demands that Chelsea at least try to be frugal. Here in Germany, you can hate Hoffenheim all you like, but they ARE frugal.

I'm very happy for HSV, but City simply has money to burn and they are flaunting that fact. That is what I hate and again, of all the clubs with rich sponsors, I think City are the ones who will wind up doing true damage to the game of football.

You guys can get money for both those players. Maybe you should have a sweet video made of the both of them and send it to City fan clubs. Those fools will demand the club buy those players then! LOL!!

Yeah, I saw those stories, but I have reason to believe it wouldn't have gotten done. I can't prove the reasons, so I won't go into what they are. Call it what you like. It's just crap I heard from good sources.

But you are dead on about the reports. Beiersdorfer told everyone they were close to a deal.

They key word being close.

However dude, even if City had waited and the new deal was done, they still could have gotten the player for less than what they offered up.

Well I'm Dutch and I'm VERY surprised. He's nowhere near worth that kind of money and let's not pretend that he's guaranteed a place in the Holland starting XI either! He's a good, physically strong defensive midfielder but without any specific, unique qualities and call me naive but to pay nearly 20 million for that type of player is downright ridiculous.

Congrats to HSV, I bet you're laughing all the way to the bank as he shouldn't be that hard to replace for an equally good but much cheaper player.

I'm not saying that Nigel de Jong's true value is 20m. I do presume he will be worth that kind of cash to City. You have a group of people - mostly clueless people or biased opposing fans that try so hard to degenerate Nigel's prowess that it makes little sense to do so when you consider how many players have been sold for inflated prices that didn't have the talent Nigel has. I'm not saying that he's worldclass, but think back of the Italy match. Gattuso was either disguised as de jong or Nigel was showing his ability against world class opposition. He did this against France and Russia. If one shows this much promise, how can you take away the potential by saying he isn't worth 20m? This 24 year old has still everything to prove in the EPL, but in his backpack he carries a degree of pedigree to at least show he wasn't a waste of money.

In my view Citey handled with swift determination due to the growing interest in de Jong. Why do you think he was getting a deal where he'd be the bestpaid player in the squad? They knew predators were lurking and awaiting the summer.

I don't think there would be a team in the world that would pay more than 14 million euros for Nigel de Jong. So why did they bid 19.5 million then? Breathing space?

They wanted him suddenly and quickly. Just look at the ridiculous demands Beiersdorfer is now facing when trying to get us a replacement equally suddenly and quickly.

Besides, BILD purports Hamburg gets less than 18m, up to 3m of those 18m perhaps being agents' fees. The tabloids are often well-informed about HSV "secrets".

Still the sum doesn't make sense? I guess City just added a bit out of sheer exaltation.

Just throwing money around because they can.

Bild.de: HSV With Ivica Olic And Mladen Petric Against 1860

Earlier today, the newly laid pitch at the HSH Nordbank Arena in Hamburg was given another small warming session to be ready for HSV’s German Cup match against 1860 München at 7PM tonight.

In this German Cup Round of 16 contest, HSV coach Martin Jol can select from nearly a full roster. Only long-term injury Alex Silva is unavailable and is not even in Hamburg. The Brazilian is expected back in Germany on Thursday.

Martin Jol says of Silva: “He cannot fly sooner. The surgery was a bit more complicated than first thought. They found he suffered a double tear. Naturally, Alex Silva will miss Friday’s match with Bayern.

Others will have to do the job against “Die Löwen” (The Lions). Jol, who allowed his players to stay at home the night before home matches is confident. “I am always optimistic. We are well-prepared and we are playing at home against a second division team. If we keep our form, we will advance.”

The coach will trust a team of proven personnel. A reason for this is lack of alternatives. Guy Demel should be at right back, moving Jerome Boateng to the bench. Paolo Guerrero will have to get used to a substitute’s role again as Mladen Petric and Ivica Olic are first choice at striker.

Rumours have been appearing which confirm that HSV sports director Beiersdorfer has been and is seriously pursuing the plan to bring Marko Marin to Hamburg (next summer). Great stuff.

In other news, Thiago Neves seems to be turning into a headcase, sadly.

Very sweet win...

I think, given the results over the last few years, the team just "knows" Bayern cannot beat them...I for one knew it all along ;)

I noticed Thiago Neves wasnt in the squad again tonight, is he injured again or just that far out of the first team squad??
