Perhaps we should bring either Marko Marin or Lars Bender to Hamburg in summer.

good idea...

good idea...

I stole it somewhere...

Lars Bender might have several followers among the league's top 5, but Marko Marin...no way Bremen (Özil), Leverkusen (Renato Augusto), Stuttgart (Gebhardt) or Bayern will be contenders in summer. Schalke shouldn't have the money. And I'm confident he'll prefer Hamburg to leaving the Bundesliga at this point.

MM to Hamburg!

Immer ruhig mit den jungen Pferden...

Diego most likely will leave this summer, Özil will become the new #10, and Marin will be signed for the wings.

It is written in the stars.

Marin can play either on the wings (not in a diamond) or as "10" behind the strikers. Werder Bremen won't buy Marin as #10 as they still have Diego and Özil for this position. Moreover they have NO wingers in the team (except young Huseijnovic) who could play on the other wing with Marin.

I am quite sure Werder Bremen will play a diamond next season as they do since several years. Unfortunately there is no place in this system for two highly gifted talents like Özil and Marin. This would be a waste of ressources.

First of all, the diamond 4-4-2 may be our 'standard' system, but it is not the only one. Against Bayern earlier this season, for example, we played this midfield formation very successfully, as you may remember.

----Özil--------Diego----
---Baumann--Vranjes----

It was therefore more of a 'square' than a diamond. And especially once Diego leaves, it's rather likely for us to share the "burden of creativity" among two players, instead of just one at the top of the diamond, knowing that Özil is still very young and relatively inexperienced.

So a formation like this could be rather likely next season:

------Özil--------Marin-----
----Tziolis-------Frings-----

Time will tell where Marin will move to, but we have shown interest in him already, and it would make sense, and would not be a "waste of resources".

Enough about Werder here though, back to HSV.

Schalke has the money. They probably just won't go for him.

Kicker reports the de Jong deal is done and Man City will pay you guys just under 20M Euros for him.

I guess they don't realize you guys just ass-raped them! LOL!!!

Is there anyone here who truly believes Nigel deJong was actually worth that money?

Would you guys have accepted a bit more than half of that for him too??

Great deal guys!!

I hope Mr. Beiersdorfer is smart with that money!

According to boss Tönnies, Schalke will be trying to cut personnel costs by up to 20%. Not because they feel like it, but because they have to with the Champions League out of sight.

Dude, that doesn't mean Schalke is broke. Don't let the fact they are cutting salaries fool you.

Part of their plan accounts for player transfers. Yes, they are cutting salaries to help make up for the CL loss, but one player got a raise. Westermann.

I think they want to stick it to some underachieving players too.

They also just sold Ze Roberto back to Brazil.

Again, Schalke still has money for transfers. They just aren't doing any right now because of the size of their roster.

They do need to get rid of some more players. It doesn't help them that they've been completely shitty in the transfer market too.

De Jong is very underrated it would seem. IMO he'd walk straight into the starting eleven of the England team for instance. Prior to Citeh's interest hamburg were preparing a contract where Nigel would be the highest paid footballer in the team. It also has been reported that other high profile teams were interested in his services. Euro2008 was a showcase that de Jong can raise his game against prolific teams. Against Russia he was the best man on the field for Holland. I don't think you should look that surprised as you look at the price considering the already ongoing inflated valuations in England.

I don't think anyone is denying his ability as a player. I personally rate him very highly and liked him ever since I saw him play with Ajax. However, player values and wages are way inflated in today's market and thats all people were saying. Very few players in my opinion are realistically worth in the 20 million range.

I get all of that, but to pay 20M for a player who they really had no competition for is silly even if they have money to burn.

It is like when we had the Hargreaves discussions on the Bayern boards before and just after he went to Man U.

We all know Hargreaves isn't worth what Man U. paid for him. But in that case, Man U. were trying to buy a player from a club who didn't want to sell the player. Man U. HAD to make Bayern an offer they couldn't refuse.

Hell, if people are honest, stupid ass City could have made this deal for between 12 and 15M Euros too.

What I'm getting at is that City didn't have a clue here. They didn't do their homework. They jumped directly to the "make an offer they can't refuse" stage when most know HSV would have taken less for deJong.

As I stated in another forum, Man City is going to prove to the world that in football, you can have all the money in the world, but if you have incompetent idiots running your club, you still won't be successful.

If you think deJong stayed on the injured list here in the Bundesliga, what is going to happen to him in the rough and tumble Premiership??

I know what kind of player Nigel deJong is. Remember, Dortmund was trying to sign him when he chose HSV. I know the guy can play. But even in England, he isn't worth 20M.

No f#cking way.

I congratulate your management at HSV for making such a deal. But no one is going to tell me that Nigel freakin' deJong is worth 20M Euros.

No f#cking way.

Of course, everything you said is correct. City spending that much was silly.

But remember, when Abramovich entered the picture we came into the era of silly money in football.

I wouldn't be surprised to see more bad deals like this as more foreign investors enter the football business.

Don't blame this on Abramowich. I hate him and Chelsea, but the first thing he did was go out to find some competent people to run his club.

He did that when he poached Peter Kenyon from Manchester United. And then not a year later when he bought Jose Mourinho from Porto.

They stopped the bit of careless spending that Raineri did before they got rid of him.

As much as people complain about Hoffenheim, they've never done anything this stupid. They have built well from the ground up.

Again, I'm happy HSV benefited from Man City's stupidity. I hope they come for a BVB player next.

But if those Sheiks were smart, they would go out and buy some damned front-office competence.

Well I'm Dutch and I'm VERY surprised. He's nowhere near worth that kind of money and let's not pretend that he's guaranteed a place in the Holland starting XI either! He's a good, physically strong defensive midfielder but without any specific, unique qualities and call me naive but to pay nearly 20 million for that type of player is downright ridiculous.

Congrats to HSV, I bet you're laughing all the way to the bank as he shouldn't be that hard to replace for an equally good but much cheaper player.

They could've also picked up Van Bommel for free this summer!
