MY old Arsenal team-mate David Rocastle would be turning in his grave right now if he looked at what is happening with the Gunners.
Rocky’s life was tragically cut short when in its prime.
But I’d like to think I was the same as him with regard to how much passion and pride we showed when the name Arsenal was mentioned.
Yet I have to admit, I am worried. Worried about the present, worried about the future and worried about the direction in which Arsenal appear to be heading.
I am constantly asking myself if Arsenal are now seen as just a stepping stone for wannabe great players and no longer the place where world-class stars are happy to see out their careers.
Dutch master Dennis Bergkamp was a footballing genius who packed up football when Arsenal let him go at the ripe old age of 37.
I was desperate to finish my own career in that red shirt but, for one reason or another, I was moved on.
Bergkamp was the catalyst for so many good things at Arsenal.
His immense presence helped to attract the likes of Patrick Vieira, Thierry Henry, Freddie Ljungberg, Robert Pires — the list is endless.
Who can fill that role now? Who is the magnet to attract the best? Maybe Cesc Fabregas but, as good as he is, the young Spaniard is still learning his trade.
Meanwhile, the Gunners seem unable to hang on to even squad players, with Mathieu Flamini switching to AC Milan and Alex Hleb going to Barcelona.
If any Arsenal fan told me they expected the club to finish in the top four this season, I reckon they would be optimistic rather than realistic.
They would be talking with their heart and not their head.
I just hope they are not losing their heads in the boardroom, as normally the people upstairs get it right. But, with all the unrest we have been hearing about, maybe that’s not the case.
It’s been suggested to me that manager Arsene Wenger is now toeing the line — that he’s a board man.
But that will never be the case as he cares intently about the team and what he can bring to it with his own skill. I’d imagine the board are scared about losing him too!
Yet Arsene has not been the busiest in the summer, which seems a bit strange as Arsenal don’t make idle boasts — especially about money.
So when you read that they have £70million or so to spend, you know it’s for real. But their transfer dealings have been overshadowed by Manchester United, Chelsea and Liverpool.
United have shown resilience by fighting tooth and nail to keep Cristiano Ronaldo.
And though Dimitar Berbatov may not arrive, United signalled their intent with their audacious bid for the Tottenham star.
Liverpool are refusing to stand still and have flexed their muscles in the transfer market with Spurs striker Robbie Keane.
Chelsea have landed Deco and Jose Bosingwa and are on a high-profile tour of the Far East and Russia.
Everyone knows the foundations at Arsenal ARE strong but everything else looks a bit shaky.
Emmanuel Adebayor answered all questions last season but even he appears to be trying to get away.
Top-class players are bought not only for what they bring to the team but for the ‘wow’ factor too.
You want to give fans a sense of anticipation for the upcoming season, a feeling that they can’t wait for the first ball to be kicked.
I’ll have to be brutal here and say that I sadly don’t feel that way about Arsenal with the new campaign just about to start.

It's sad that one of the greatest players ever at our club is now an idiot for not loving the club enough not to ignore its shortcomings. But again I'd say that's the difference between love for and religious faith in Arsenal, religious faith always creates intolerance for any views not line with that faith, no matter who is brave enough or foolhardy enough to express them

loving the club? he doesnt know what he is talking about, and has disrespected the club in the past...
and disrespecting Rocastle is not endearing either

Hmmm, they are quite a few good points in the article.
I, too, must admit that part of me is dreading this season and what might not come of it. As much as I want to believe that this will be THE season for our Young Gunners, I still half expect the 2008/2009 season will be end as 2007/2008, i.e. lovely football with no silverware to add to the trophy case.
As a passionate supporter, I am also guilty of thinking (perhaps wishing) that all good Arsenal players will remain Gunners until the end of their careers (For example, I cannot imagine Clichy in a Blue and Black vertical striped jersey), so when I'll watch Flamini and Hleb play for their new teams this season, I'll just pretend they are on eternal loan :)
Enough rambling, and let the season begin.... We Are The Arsenal!

He wants us to spend money to satisfy some summertime feeling...?
"If any Arsenal fan told me they expected the club to finish in the top four this season, I reckon they would be optimistic rather than realistic." Oh yeah, unlike last year...

I agree wholly talking of David Rocastle was inappropriate and distasteful.
No you see you think he has - which doesn't automatically make it so, does it? And maybe the reason you think he has is because of the very intolerance ofr thought that doesn't embrace that absolute faith and trust you have in the club. Think about it...
Its like "Intervention" - you have an intervention because you love someone enough not to blindly trust them not to harm themselves, and to help them at least have a chance to become healthier and live a happier llife. However if you just trust someone no matter what you see, hear, and know, its far less likely they will have that chance at that healthier better life. A lot of people hear watch this show so you'd think that would make more sense but some are too busy laughing as if these people's lives are comic fodder.
Point being that you and others can't seem to see anything about the club being done wrong actually or possibly sometimes and that blinds some of you to the idea that anyone who does cannot love the club.

are u trying to say im apart of some Gooner cult? what are you talking about?
I criticize the club... as every supporter should... and I accept real and thought out criticism... Wright hasn't said anything that fits into that... what has Manchester United done this summer that makes their summer better than Arsenal's? they may still lose Cronaldo and have signed no one... why is it important to point out that Chelsea are touring the Far East? and this 'wow' factor he speaks off... was their a wow factor for the best RB in the premiership when he signed last summer? how about for Eduardo? like I said before, he isnt making an argument... its not well thought out... it seems like he is reading the papers and running with this as fact...

No and I apologize if that is the impression you took.
I am saying there are two types of Gooners who both love Arsenal as much as they possibly can - but one group tends to be more purely emotional, like say a worried parent, and another more spiritual, like a deeply religious person with intense faith. The worried parent will take action when he sees something worrying in their child's behavior. The more religious person will trust their God or their child more and longer.
The more faith driven person will also react more aggressively if questioned about this, even more intolerantly of the question and the person posing it.
With all due respect - I haven't read enough of your posts to definitive describe you this way - but many Gooners think having a go at the players and their performance week in and week out and no one else at the club is criticizing the club, perhaps that is waht you mean - I don't know for certain.
As to real and thought out criticism, what makes it not real or though out? United hasn't lost as many key players as we have already AND sadly it looks as though Cristaino IS staying now(though I'd rather beat them with that nancy-boy there). I think he's pointing out that we are still not opening other avenues of revenue short-and long-term other big clubs are when he talks about Chelsea's tour. And do you really wanna say that Sagna and Eduardo good as they were had the same impact on and off the pitch that signing Sol Campbell or Denis Bergkamp did - the last two really "Wow"! signings for me - their first seasons? If we sign Inler will you go "Wow!" when its announced?

but in both cases, you are completely helpless to whatever the club wants to do.

I will ignore the first part because it makes no sense... and irrelevant...
you really missed my point... Bergkamp was a 'wow' signing... so was Sol... cool... how about Henry? Vieira? how about Cesc? how about Freddie? or Pires? I can give a fucc about a 'wow' factor, Id rather have players that perform well for the club, like those LEGENDS did... Veron was a wow signing, and he helped United out immensely, no?
Guys like Sagna and Eduardo are the types of signings I like... just like a Bergkamp and Sol... and not like a Franny Jeffers... why? because those guys went out and performed, wow factor or not...
and that was not what Wright meant when he was talking about the Chelsea tour... if he meant that, he would have stated it... unfortunately he did not...

The first part was just explaining I wasn't saying you were in some cult...
As to the second what was Mr. Wright's point then about Chelsea's tour, since you seem to know enough to determine what it wasn't?

Whose cried the sky is falling - oh that's right , anyone who doesn't see things theway some people do are crying the sky is falling. My bad...
As to my analogy what is so offensive? The point is some people have pure faith -and the blind trust that creates - in Arsenal...In the club, in the manager, and in the Board. And I think if you look at how those people react to other Gooners who don't show the same faith you could say they show a similar intolerance to those they deem less faithful. I'm sorry you are offended but I would understand that better if the analogy were purely baseless, and while I could have chosen a better example I don't think the analogy is baseless at all.
