I lived in New Zealand for a while and got infected with the Rugby virus. I also went to Sydney for the 2003 Rugby World Cup. I didn't get any tickets, but it was still awesome (except for the fact that the All Blacks lost miserably in the semi final against Australia, after crushing them with a record victory just weeks before).
what? you lived in nz? when and where??

Yeah, I was there from July to December. Which means that I had 3 winters in 2003

Well, I learned to appreciate the style of play that the All Blacks show. I think they're just the most spectacular side. Plus I love the Haka.
So it was a real bummer that England won it in 2003, because they were the most boring side...play it safe and somehow get the Ball to Wilkinson who'll try to make a drop-kick goal...and a last minute goal at that...well, two last minute goals actually, one in regular time and one in extra time.

they had carlos spencer at 1st 5/8 which led to a very spectacular style of play. he was a flair player.
the reason i dont like the all blacks is because of the way over the top marketing and hype in the country and also how rugby i feel is shutting out the development of other sports.

I remember when Klopp had to do it in Mainz they found some way around it.
So I don't think it should be a problem, just make Widmayer the 'official' coach while Babbel gets his and continues to make the decisions and lead the trainings.
Anyway, summer's a long way away so let's not worry about that just yet. Babbel's been in charge 4 games so far, let's take it easy. :)
It has been something teams have gotten around easily in the past, but supposed the federation is going to be a lot more strict about it from now on, pretty much starting with Babbel.

Yeah, he was great. I also really liked Tana Umaga (coincidentally, I'm wearing a Umaga shirt right now) and Joe Rokocoko who was the new sensation back in 2003.

I see your point. Although from what I heard from many New Zealanders, football was apparently on the rise. Not so much as a spectator sport yet, but more and more kids were playing it.
But even so, it seemed to me as if there were in fact other sports that got national attention. Of course there was Rugby League and cricket (I still don't get why people would willingly watch a cricket game), but also basketball and netball...
Anyway, I think the pride in the All Blacks is indeed justified. For a small country like NZ to be so dominant is a great feat. And of course something like that is prone to be marketed to death.

It was definitely tense...I mean the fact that it was decided by two last minute drop kicks says it all. However, all in all England was still the most boring among the top sides. Even the French were more inspiring.

Yes, and from what I understand, it is mostly Matthias Sammer's doing.

Yeah. I guess he wants to be the last manager to have won the title without having the proper badges.

Dude, you're taking it pretty personally.
I agree that it sucks, but I also think it isn't anything against Stuttgart personally.
I think this is Sammer trying to establish his authority and power base within the DFB.
Which is pretty hard to do with the "Bayern influence" all over that place.

I wouldn't worry. It's just "SportBild" speculation. I have no doubt that if Babbel can keep the team playing like it has for him, the job will be his.

I'm not that worried about. The crack about Sammer was really just a joke. We don't even really know if we want Babbel to be the permanent coach. It has only been four games so far, and the positive results could just be a result of change in any form, not necessarily who is coaching.

yeah spencer was a maverick and they had a maverick coach in john mitchell at the time who suited him otherwise he always had trouble fitting into the gameplan with other coaches, who preferred mehrtens. Spencer was hated by the canterbury crowd when he played for auckland ;)
they always preferred a guy like mehrtens or carter who fits the image more than spencer.
it's quite funny but i think the overath v/s netzer thing is similar to spencer v/s mehrtens, although i guess overath was as skilful as netzer in reality and mehrtens (almost) as spencer, but the style on and off the pitch and the looks etc of netzer and spencer always overshadowed the low profiles of the other 2.
umaga was made captain soon after that WC, very good player. Once spencer left he led the haka.
Yeah rokocoko was the big thing back then, but got dropped a few years later for the next fijian ;), but now he's back.
the joke in nz was that the all blacks are getting darker and the all whites (football team) are getting whiter.
The samoans in nz sometimes just call the all blacks "Manu Samoa II".
I see your point. Although from what I heard from many New Zealanders, football was apparently on the rise. Not so much as a spectator sport yet, but more and more kids were playing it.
that's true - football was and i think still is the biggest amongst kids but once they get old theres nowhere to go really.
But even so, it seemed to me as if there were in fact other sports that got national attention. Of course there was Rugby League and cricket (I still don't get why people would willingly watch a cricket game), but also basketball and netball...
rugby league gets snubbed quite often in the biggest sports awards in the country and by many old school rugby sports journalists and sports talk show hosts. League is seen as the polynesian game. It's funny how they just won the rugby world cup over perennial favourites australia, while the all blacks havent won it in ages despite being the perennial favourite.
basketball is also big at the grassroots level but again at the highest level there isnt as much avenue although more than football. It's also mostly played by polynesian kids but more mixed than league.
cricket came along with rugby at the start and is not as popular as in australia despite being the "summer game". Cricket is a GREAT game when it's "test cricket" (in whites)...a true test of temperament and skill like no other sport. Watch 1 full game and then you can judge it. In NZ test cricket is declining fast while the shorter more commercial formats in coloured clothing are popular. Australia and england it's the exact opposite.
Anyway, I think the pride in the All Blacks is indeed justified. For a small country like NZ to be so dominant is a great feat. And of course something like that is prone to be marketed to death.
yeah, and it's damaging to the country's morale and also other sports. I mean everyone is so down that the all black's haven't won the WC since 87 (they didnt have wcs before that when they were truly dominant).
It was definitely tense...I mean the fact that it was decided by two last minute drop kicks says it all. However, all in all England was still the most boring among the top sides. Even the French were more inspiring.
the french are always more inspiring, they play attacking rugby.
england were boring but still fitted into the mix well to make the final rounds very exciting to watch.

I see a change in VfB's overall attitude on the field. I don't think that this occurred in tandem with Veh being let go is any coincidence.
No, it doesn't mean Babbel is a better coach than Veh, but it does mean that Babbel is possibly better for this team at this moment than Veh was.

For one thing Babbel has them training longer hours and is supposedly tougher on them - their fighting spirit and effort have improved enormously since Veh left so far - and I guess that's down to such changes.
Veh did great things, but over the last season and a half it seemed like he was simply too easy on the side, and didn't come up with solutions to problems that arose, he couldn't steady the ship any more. And that proved to be his undoing.
