Last season, Werder also lost the first game 3-0 and in the end they had a fantastic season. Maybe it will happen again.

Dennis Diekmeier also became the best U19 german youth player after the cup win.

At least our second team did well today, with Max Kruse stealing the show. Another promising talent of the Werder youth.

Another transfer for the reserve.

21 years old French offensive midfielder Fabrice Begeorgi (http://www.transfermarkt.de/de/spieler/36911/fabrice-begeorgi/profil.html) joins the reserve
as a loaning deal with Olympique Marseille.

The first half of the season he was on loan at TuS Koblenz in 2.BL,
made 11 matches there and scored one goal, but had problems
with the coach there and so was sent back to Olympique.

He is a technically gifted player, that should help the reserve,
but he is also known as someone, who takes life easy (that was
also the reason for the problems with coach Rapolder, who
can´t stand undiscipline). I don´t know yet if there´s a buying option.

Our U19 team is doing really well in the prestigious "Mercedes Benz Junior Cup" (indoor) in Sindelfingen. They beat HSV, Galatasaray and Middlesbrough, and drew with the KSC youngsters, winning their group. Together with CF America (Mexico), they are the only team that is still unbeaten in the competition. HSV and Celtic have been knocked out.

In the second round, they'll have to play against Dinamo Zagreb, Borussia Dortmund and Middlesbrough.

The boys reached the 3rd rank after a loss in the semis
against Karlsruher SC (0-1, against goal
in the last minute :( ) and a win in the match for rank 3
against Club América from Mexico (1-0).

Karlsruher won the final with 1-0 after extra-time vs. Zagreb.
Good tournament performance by Werder: 4 wins, 3 draws, 1 loss.

Good performance by our youngsters indeed (friggin' KSC again, must be a curse...). Like I wrote earlier, there is huge potential in our youth teams, and we definitely need to make better use of it. We need to improve the integration in the senior team.

"Eisenfuß" Eilts

Yes, the integration is really a must.

Werder invest much money into the youth developement,
not only in its own teams, the football school and trips
to international tournaments, but also in the 100s
cooporate schools project.

It´s sad to see only a few players made it into the first team.
The step between the reserve and the first team seems too big,
especially for the ones coming from the own youth.

The own youth players have quality as you can see at many youth
tournaments and in the youth leagues where most of the teams play on top
of the highest possible league (in every youth level, except the 10 years old, the one year older team (U19, U17, ...) play in Bundesliga North and the one
year younger (U18,U16) the league below BL, because the 2 teams are
not allowed to play in the same league.

So i find it very sad, that only a very few player make it into the BL team.
On the other hand many players in the first team are very young with good
potential, but not complete players yet, so i understand, that they get match
practice. Furthermore a reason why we saw no new prospects in the
first team this season is, that the reserve suffers under many unjuries
(similar to the first team this season).
That´s one of the reasons why they are so bad in table and draining
the best talents out of this team in their situation just to give them
some BL minutes is not clever.

In any case the good developement must be continued and at some points
improved, because it is a backbone of a club.

Addy-Waku Menga, a 25 years old striker joins the reserve from Hansa Rostock (2.BL).

I remember him playing in the past for Osnabrück and scored there many goals in Regionalliga (3rd division back than). I also remember him as someone
wasting many chances, but with his experience he should help the joung team.

Werder.de has the story (http://www.werder.de/aktuelles/news/meldung.php/14766/AddyWaku-Menga-wechselt-zu-Werder-Bremen)

Good to see that Allofs is strenghtening our second team with a couple of promising young players like Ikeng and Begeorgi, and 'veterans' like Menga. I think that it is important for our second team to remain in the 3. Bundesliga, and not get relegated, and they've been really struggling in the first half.

Our second team, Werder II (3. Bundesliga), played a Winterpause friendly against Arminia Bieliefeld (1. Bundesliga) today. The final result was 2-2, Feldhahn and 18 year old Testroet (great talent!) scoring the goals for us. Arminia were leading 2-1 at half time, but Testroet scored the equaliser in the 75'.
Both newcomers, Begeorgi and Menga, had their debut today.

Werder Bremen II: Wiedwald – Holsing, Schmidt (46. Hessel), Stallbaum, Begeorgi – Ronneburg (63. Kempe), Oehrl (75. Vucinovic), Feldhahn, Artmann (46. Ayik) – Granskov (46. Testroet), Menga (63. Albry)

Arminia Bielefeld: Fernandez – Schuler, Kucera (46. Bollmann), Mijatovic, Lamey – Kauf, Marx (64. Janjic), Munteanu (75. Laas), Kirch (64. Tesche) – Katongo (64. Versick), Wichniarek (75. Sadik)

Goals: 1:0 Feldhahn (12.), 1:1 Katongo (17.), 1:2 Kauf (33.), 2:2 Testroet (75.)

At least our second team is looking good these days. And they'll need to be, knowing how they have been struggling in the 3. Bundesliga so far this season.

Werder II played another friendly today, this time against 2. Bundesliga club SpVgg Greuther Fürth. The match ended in a draw again, with Testroet scoring again for us. Hopefully, Testroet stays fit in the Rückrunde, he is a great talent whose goals will definitely help our struggling second team to remain in the 3. Bundesliga.

Werder Bremen: Wiedwald – Holsing, Hessel, Stallbaum (46. Schmidt), Begeorgi (69. Dreyer) – Oehrl, Vucinovic (46. Kempe), Feldhahn, Ayik (57. Granskov) – Testroet (46. Artmann), Menga (63. Albry)

SpVgg Greuther Fürth: Kirschstein – Schröck (46. Werle), Mauersberger, Meichelbeck, Rahn (46. Felgenhauer) – Haas (75. Kotuljac) , Voigt (75. Srenaj), Allagui (75. Caligiuri), Takyi – Ilicevic, Reisinger (46. Langen)

Goals: 1:0 Testroet (16.), 1:1 Mauersberger (29.)

Werder II won their first match in 2009 against RW Erfut today, very important points in the upcoming relegation struggle. Newcomer Menga scored the winning goal for us.

It'll be important for our second team to remain in the 3. Liga, which is much more competitive than the Regionalliga, and therefore a much better environment for our young players to develop. It's a real challenge for young players, which makes it easier for our first team to integrate them later on, since the difference to 1. Bundesliga Fußball is smaller compared to the Regionalliga level.

Despite 10 missed players (injuries, youth national teams) the U23 beat
Kickers Offenbach 3-1 (goals by Oehrl, Feldhahn and Andersen).

Pellatz - Holsing, D. Schmidt, Stallbaum, N. Andersen - Feldhahn, Kruse - Harnik, Ikeng - Menga, Oehrl

subs: 88. Begeorgi for Harnik, 90. Ronneburg for Kruse

highlights at HR 3 (Hessischer Rundfunk) (http://www.hr-online.de/website/rubriken/sport/index.jsp?rubrik=18714&key=standard_document_36672244&mediakey=fs/sportamsamstag/20090328_kickers&type=v)

Watching the highlights you can see, that the team plays nice football, but the efficiency is not good (as at the first team). The reserve is now 2 points away from the first non-relegation rank and must show performances like also away from home (where they haven´t done well so far).
