My lady and I are flying to Argentina for 2 weeks to enjoy this great country! I really really really need to see a Boca Juniors or River Platte match.

I am correct that both teams play in March and April, yes?
How hard is it to get tickets? I honestly don't care where we sit...I just HAVE to attend a match or 2 (or 3).

So if someone could link me to schedules for both teams... and give me some suggestions on the games, obtaining tix, etc. I would be SOOO appreciative!

Cheers,
Karlo

By then the Clausura will have started, the proper schedules for the Clausura will probably be released in January. Getting tickets for River may not be very complicated, for Boca it could but maybe a tourism agency could get them for you to see either team, anyway if you get the tickets by youself, don't worry the prices for foreign standards aren't high, even the expensive seats.

Andres, thanks for the heads up. Didn't know what Apertura (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apertura) and Clausura (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clausura) were :).

So in your opinion... should we see a match in Buenos Aires?

Besides Boca J and River P, what other teams are in the Buenos Aires region?

Thanks again!

Karlo

Just a lil over 1/2 half of the league is in the greater BA Metro area you shouldn't have any problem finding another game to go to besides Boca/River .
Another Classico not to miss would be Independiente VS. Racing or San Lorenzo VS. Huracan .... But any game between the BIG 5 (cinco grandes) would be an excellent derby..
1. Boca Jrs.
2. River Plate
3. San Lorenzo
4. Independiente
5. Racing *
Velez Sarsfield vs. any of the above should be great as well..

* Although Racing is in an awful financial mess , soaring debt, player disputes, bankruptcy etc. etc. It has one of the most loyal fan bases in Argentina w/ the 3rd largest home attendance record behind Boca and River for the 08 Clausura season despite its last place finish..

Ps. Clausura is Southern Hemisphere winter or Closure season, Apertura is the opposite ..

In Buenos Aires there are 6 teams.
-Boca Juniors, Boca is expected to play their home matches at San Lorenzo's stadium near the end of the Apertura.
-River Plate
-Argentinos Juniors
-San Lorenzo
-Vélez Sarsfield
-Huracán, for now is playing their matches at Argentinos' stadium.

In the surroundings, you have:
-Independiente, Racing and Arsenal, all in Avellaneda.
-Banfield in Lomas de Zámora.
-Lanús in Lanús(duh).
-Tigre in San Fernando(differently from the others Tigre is to the north).

Then Rosario(Which is 300km to the northwest of Buenos Aires) and La Plata(60(?)km to the southeast) to see 4 more teams. The rest are some thousands kilometres away.

Heck if he is going to Salta or Jujuy it is great to watch a game there too, just at the footbed of the Andes!!!! 2 weeks man is not enought time, seriously give yourself at least 25 days and then you can see Salta, Iguazu Falls, Buenos Aires and take a bus to see the wonderfull countryside:).

Lanus man is not a bad stadium, but seriously as a rookie I would not go there and wander as a tourist, not the safest place any time of day:(

Many of Buenos Aires's better hotels have soccer related tours they may offer check with one via the interent some are English ready if you don't speak fluent Spanish, Claridge is one in particular I recomend as it is 4 to 5 star and relatively cheap, have some staff that can speak english and do have an in house agency that sets up tours soccer related and otherwise.
Hope that helps.

Don't forget that if he like went to see Godoy Cruz, he'd go to Mendoza which is a very nice city(the province of Mendoza in general is a cool place to visit).

Amen to that, amen. I tell you things are not looking so rosy here in Canada as of late, fuel prices are killing us, what used to be spending cash or the "entertainment fund " is now groceries and transportation, in the end I may have steak once a month!!! Sure I have a big screen TV, Playstation, lovely home, but I work 50 hours a week minimum, I come home tired, my freinds all work, weekends are spent running around doing errands, we need to set appointments to see our freinds well in advance......... OK Im bitching now, but you get the point.:(

There are a number of travel agencies that specialize in soccer tours. To go see a big game with Boca or River, that would make the most sense because you won't have to worry about lining up for tickets. They also take you to/from the match, which is helpful for night games.

I was in BA in May and I saw a whole bunch of matches. I took a cab to Lanus on a Friday night, it was very uncrowded, but hard to find a cab back (I had to walk a fair amount). I met up with a guy who helped me get into Independiente. I ducked out of that game early any found a cab (again, not too easy) and went clear-across town to see Argentinos Juniors. I arrived right after kickoff but still was able to buy a seat.

On Sunday I went to Boca-River with a tour. That was over $300, but also included lunch and transportation. A lot, but frankly there's no other way to do it, especially if it's in the Bonbonera. Truly the experience of a lifetime.

You should be there during Copa Libertadores, don't miss out on that. I took another tour to see River and San Lorenzo for $65, which I though was a good deal.

And don't forget second-division matches, which may run at times where the bigger teams aren't playing. I dropped in on Ferro Carril Oeste for $6 and really enjoyed the atmosphere, even though I only stayed a half.

In Buenos Aires the cabs are quite cheap so don't let distances put you off, you can get from one play to another pretty easily. Spanish language helps a lot, but if you don't have much you still should be able to manage.

As a gringo interested in soccer, lots of people were delighted that I had come to the games

Yes! you do care where you sit! If you want to come out of the game alive. Im from Argentina and I dont even go for the cheap tickets becouse thats the worse of the worse sitting there. Last year I went to boca river and for great SAFE seats were about 70 pesos (devide that by 4) about 20 bux. Im sure it wont be a prob finding tix on the street but be savy and wise with your money cuz they mug tourists all the time. Again, I was born there, go every year yet they seem to know who or who doesnt live in argentina. Do not wear any perticulars teams shirt, cuz they riot after lol. Just go in like a white tshirt or something. Same for the wifey. Oh and make sure you go with her to the restroom AT ALL TIMES. I dont mean to scare you but its the truth UNFOURTENETLY becouse its a gorgeous country! Games are a blast lots of passion goes into them.

You can really early to the stadium to get tix but to be on the safe side, here is Argentinas ticket master http://www.ticketek.com.ar/

Come now , where is your sense of adventure?? Go to Lanus and wear a River jersey and get the cheapest seats you can, then walk back to your hotel. I swear you will have a memory to last a lifetime,,,,, well the minutes they let you live.LOL.
Seriously thuough things have got worse in the last 2 years so best thing to do is to book through an agency and get good seats or a box and have a shutle taxi waiting to take you back to your hotel.

Well... I got to say that you were lucky to find a Buenos Aires' taxicab outside Buenos Aires starting with.

Bah, that's a bit exaggerated if you go to a seated section you shouldn't have any problem, except if like if you go into Boca's seats wearing a River shirt, or vice-versa, but that's a bit obvious(and probably they won't allow you in).

By the way. There may be bad news for people outside Argentina that want to see the match in the stadium, because Boca will keep their policy and won't be selling tickets, and River will keep their tickets only for club members. However it's unclear if foreigners can't get to luxury boxes or anything like that with tourism agencies.

Are you sure? A friend of mine just went to the last Libertadores match at la Bombonera and she had no trouble getting tickets.

I don't know for the Libertadores, but for the league matches since the match against Godoy Cruz they are doing that, so only club members and season ticket holders attend.
