If you ever see one with a single star, you are looking at a counterfeit. The team did not start putting stars on the shirt until the two stars of the infamous White with Red stripes away shirt of 2000 (IIRC)?

That sounds right. They added two stars in 2000, even though United had already won 3 MLS Cups by then.

The argument the team presented was "the third star is in the crest."

There was never a jersey with one star on it.

Well I guess if you follow the "star in the logo" logic, then 1998 was the first one with a single star. That was when they changed from the "Mighty" Logo to the "Trans-Am" Logo.

And even after the two stars on the away shirt, it was years before they finally put stars on the home kit.

They didn't put the stars on the uniforms they sold?

I have a picture of Jaime wearing an original jersey with the old logo that has one star on it.

They didn't have stars on the uniforms they sold, nor on the uniforms they wore.

If you have a picture with Jaime wearing an old logo shirt with a star, it's either a fake jersey or a Photoshopped picture.

Not that I remember. But there is an off-chance that they put on the one star for a special game or something? There are people around here with much better memories than I for this type of thing...

Back in 1996-1997, it was hard enough to get a replica jersey. They did not anticipate the demand for them and originally put out a T-shirt replica before finally releasing a replica jersey. Merchandising in MLS has a history of suckitude.

I can understand that. Who on earth would buy a replica (or authentic) jersey anyway?

I think someone needs to go to the video tapes of some old games and check this out. I have two live game action photos taken by a photographer friend I used to know, and both of them have the ''96-'97 logo and a star above it.

One picture is Rammel being chased by Balboa and it's the cat in the hat jersey too. Star is clearly there.
The other is Wegerle taking a shot against the Tampa goalie Budnick. It's the black three striper with the Nazi crest and a star is less clear above the stripes, but it's there.

He told me both pictures were taken in '97, and that makes sense as those guys were traded for each other in July '97. But that does seem to mean that they had stars on their jerseys both before and after July. Nor do I think he'd photoshop them. Why would anyone do that?

However, the two jerseys I actually own from '97 don't have stars over them, but I'm pretty sure they didn't put stars on any jerseys for public sale until the Red and White Jerseys in like 2000.

I have the '97 MLS cup match on tape and I a pretty certain their are stars on the jersey.

Even now, the replica jerseys dont have stars... only the authentic ones do.

Did they sell them like this back then?

I can honestly say I don't remember ever seeing a star on any players' jerseys until the 2000 jersey that revelation mentioned above.

Granted, I wasn't on the field taking photos in the early years, but I certainly don't remember seeing it.

Who were the photogs back in '97? Was Tony Quinn shooting back then? Maybe one of you media types could ask around to see if anyone has some old pictures from back in the day.

Yes, Tony has been shooting since day 1.

I don't know if he'll remember - he has forgotten a bunch of stuff I've asked him about from '96. With the number of pictures he takes, I can understand why.

I'll ask him when I see him tomorrow.

See, even in that picture I can only see Jaime's amazing footwork and the shockingly blonde hair...

:D

Ummm.... Yes, Mike I have pictures from 1997! :) You also could wander around inside the stadium offices. They have live action pictures blown up all over the walls. Gotta be some from '97.

And yes, Tony Quinnn was shooting back then. I think Jorge and Raphael were shooting back then too, but I met them later in like '99-'00. The guy I knew only shot pictures the first two years for the Spanish press, and then he disappeared. He used to come to tailgates to hang out and sell pictures he'd had autographed. I'm sure someone else must remember him. For the life of me I can't remember his name though.

Funny story from '96 about Tony Quinn which is how I know he shot pistures back then. Robin and I were riding the Metro to a game and sitting next to a guy holding a lanyard pass for the stadium. We started talking to him as I thought he was a member of the team staff or something. I was asking him all kinds of questions, etc. and he didn't seem to know anything about the team. Well, long story short, he corrected me on my misperception, but then spent the whole ride telling us really interesting anecdotes from games he'd been to to take pictures. Really a classy guy then and still is.

As for actually helping this dude out who started the thread. If I were him, I'd get an old jersey on Ebay or somewhere, which crop up from time to time. It will be blank because you couldn't get names and numbers back then. So, just get numbers and name and star put on it to make it exactly what you want. There's even old Mastercard patches, etc. floating around. Someone with time and determination could accomplish it I'm sure.

Unless, you're hoping to find an actual game worn jersey or hoping someone here is going to sell you something authentic, I don't think there's any other way to get jersey from that era any other way. Well, you could always just ask Jaime if he'll sell you one of his I'm sure he kept a few. :)

This will work.

^_^

Well, you could always just ask Jaime if he'll sell you one of his I'm sure he kept a few.

Sure, could you give me his contact info and I will see if he's willing.

I'm looking at the '97 team photo and yes they all have the one star on it.

The actual game jerseys worn by the team had one star, and the replicas sold to us common folk had none.

Edit: From the team's history page...MLS Cup 1997.

Cmon HBR, any DC United fan worth his or her respective salt knows Jamie Moreno does not have blond hair. Sheesh, if you are gonna pass off some imposter in a charity match, at least make it look close...
