After major offseason turnover United fans expected a period of adjustment but it’s probably safe to say most of us got more than we were bargaining for. Bennie Olsen’s absence certainly didn’t help matters.

Those hotheads and potheads who want(ed) to fire Soehn and send Emilio packing need not reply. What I’m looking for are cool, calm, collected assessments of where United now stands and where we’re going. Below is my take on matters. Just skip to the overall assessment for each line and the overall team assessment for the short version.

GK

Wells is getting better but it’s happening too slowly - even he’ll attest he’s still making too many mistakes. With Carvallo now gone we know United will be looking for another GK. Depending on the quality of the new guy Wells may be seeing a lot of bench time or may be alternating in the starting spot. What kind of quality United can find out there is an open question. Let’s hope Wells remains healthy in the meantime. His current output would be a major liability against a good team in the playoffs.

Defense
Overall – Yeah, we’ve given up a lot of goals this year and still don’t have a shutout but we have some very good pieces and they seem to be gelling as a unit. The talent is significantly better than last year even though the results haven’t been until recently. What about the recent SuperLiga matches? Burch (in a new position every other game) & McTavish in center isn’t our true defense. With Namoff, Martinez & Peralta all healthy, a growing chemistry will lead to a stronger unit and I think they have the potential to become one of the better defensive units in the league over the coming months. Communication with Wells is still a concern; coordination with midfield is improving.

Namoff – Mr. Consistent. He makes an occasional off pass or defensive mistake and I wish he was sharper offensively when he comes forward but you can’t find much fault with Brian. Namoff will be here for many years to come.

Martinez – We struck gold here. Great defense, plays tough but doesn’t draw cards, brings the ball forward well and will shoot the ball.

Peralta - He’s had the occasional mistake and can appear a bit gangly at times but overall has been pretty solid. The defense struggled as a unit early in the year, some fault Peralta quite a bit but I’d argue it was the whole unit (incl. their lack of coordination w/ Wells). I think his absence in SuperLiga play showed.

McTavish = Has continued to grow and improve upon last year when he first began to blossom. Still, he’s the weakest link right now.

Pat Carroll – Has shown some good signs.

Midfield
Overall – No question we’re missing the grit of Olsen & Gros, I think this is one of the team’s greatest weaknesses right now. The lack of depth is also a major concern. We’re pretty good when we’re healthy but we’re not scaring anybody with this unit. We need to see more offensive threats from these guys. The chemistry with one another and the other units still isn’t there.

Simms- Playing the best ball of his life; seems to be finding the right balance for himself between aggressive & controlled play. If his technical skills progress he could become a very good player. If Simms goes down with injury we don’t have a real good option to take up the DM role and that’s a concern.

Fred – Playing well as (almost) always. Not to say
Tino- Has definitely exceeded my expectations for him this season; still there’s room for improvement. More consistency, less cards.

Gallardo – He brings such a different style of play to our game. I think this has been one reason for the long transition period we’ve experienced. He’s played well but the bang for the (major) bucks probably hasn’t been there – yet. But if this team starts to really play well I think he can raise their level even higher – making all those around him even better.

Burch - I like Burch. Too bad he's never put in one position long enough to get better at it.

Dyachenko – One always sees the potential but never the consistency. In some ways I feel done with him but at $30k a year you’re not going to get anybody better.

Cordeiro – Okay so far. With a heavy schedule and injuries we’ll be seeing more of him.

Forward
Overall – If Niell had worked out I’d be feeling a lot better. If we had another player who was a real force to pair with Emilio (and then pull Moreno back) our attack would become deadly. But that’s probably not going to happen this season. We’re left to hope Doe & Thompson can grow and we can insert Moreno – and well, that’s decent. We’ve finally begun scoring but I think the ultimate question is whether our attack is potent enough to go against the better defenses on their good days – say, in the playoffs? When you get down to it I think we’re very reliant on our midfield to buttress the lack of firepower in this position – and that’s just not there to the degree we need. In the final analysis I think we’ll be okay here and can go as far as the rest of the team will take us.

Emilio – He’s back. ‘Nuff said.

Moreno – He’s not going to run for as long or score from the run of play like he used to but boy do we miss him when he’s not there to exercise ball control.

Doe & Kirk– Raw, hopefully they’ll grow over the coming months. I don’t see either turning into too much of an asset this season though it’s possible.

Craig Thompson – I like what I’ve seen so far – a lot. Appears a bit raw but showed grit and hustle (think Gros) and some signs of craftiness. There’s a possibility we may have found something here.

The Team Overall
We’re getting better (SuperLiga aside) but health/lack of depth is a major concern with our heavy schedule. We’re very reliant on Moreno & Gallardo for ball control – take them out of the equation (read, injuries) and we’re half the team we are with them. Take Simms out and we don’t have a good replacement. With our three strongest defenders in we’re good, lose one and we’re in trouble. Lose Emilio and we lose a lot of goal scoring ability. Olsen is probably gone for the year. Our bench players are simply not as strong as some teams’, when we lose a starter our play if often greatly affected. This is something United needs to do a better job with.

If we find ourselves with a healthy team in three weeks and can remain healthy and continue to build chemistry between the guys and greater consistency we could become dangerous. What are the chances we’ll be healthy like that? Probably not great. That leads to the question of new personnel. We know we’re gonna get a new GK – hopefully United will find some quality here in which case we’d address one of our major concerns. It looks like we’re shopping around for another midfielder as well but I’m not overly optimistic it’s going to be someone potent enough to make the difference. I’m not up on how much money United has to spend but the chances of United getting a real good GK and a real good midfielder appears to be unrealistic.

If we get healthy and hot at the right time anything’s possible but with teams like Houston and New England playing consistently good, we are not a favorite for the Cup this year. I think we’d have to get very lucky. We had huge turnover in the offseason, some guys worked out and others didn’t. It takes time to build chemistry and that’ll come if we keep this team intact.

Kirk and Thompson are midfielders. Thompson is showing promise. Kirk not so much.

Doe has been fairly productive and has done well for us in Superliga play.

As a team we are more technical than most other MLS teams. Thank you Payne and Kasper for finding us gems like Emilio, Fred, Martinez and Gallardo. Unfortunately the coaching staff gets a C - in the young player development department. Where is the depth? If we don't improve before end of the year we should probably consider a new coach.

What I'm most happy about is the fact that we have managed to improve on our major weaknesses from last couple of years. I'm talking about improvements in the speed department with the additions of Martinez and Doe. We also finally have someone (Burch) who can consistently send quality crosses into the box ...

The problem is that these improvements have been made at the expense of new weakesses that have developped. Most glaring new problems are goalkeeping and a sudden lack of grit and tenacity with the absence Olsen and Gros.

We're two games away from winning the Open Cup for one thing. Have you thrown in the towel on that one?

Boo!! Happy thoughts!! I think we're doing fine and making the most of a difficult situation. Gallardo and Peralta will be back in about a month and Tino should be back in commission in a couple of weeks. The boys get a rest after tomorrow and should be back in top form after that. I think our new guys look promising but are obviously new. And as Goff mentioned, Doe has scored 3 times out of the past 4 games. Not bad. We'll be fine come September.

:D I was just kidding. But seriously, without more depth I don't see United winning much. Stranger things have happened though.(Like United beating Chicago in a knockout match )

I agree our crosses have improved, if not dramatically. I'd like to see a couple of more guys on the team who bring that capability. I really think it's a major liability of the team. As far as speed, I'd say it's been a very modest improvement. Doe isn't in the game that much and has other weaknesses in his game that mitigate against the benefit of the speed he brings.

I don't think improving in these areas was at the expense of the weaknesses you point out - though I agree on the areas you say we've become weaker. The GK situation if anything led to Boswell leaving and an improvement in talent (incl. speed) with Martinez; it wasn't Martinez's coming that led to the GK leaving. Likewise, Gros & Olsen are gone because of injuries, not shoring up other weaknesses. I don't mean to be disagreeable, just trying to be more exact - so far as I see things anyway.

Simply put, goalkeeping is a major liability, Wells will not "stand on his head" and win a playoff series.

The depth is non-existent. For whatever virtues Thompson, Cordeiro, Carroll and Burch bring to the team, only Burch is a serviceable substitute. The SuperLiga showed that without Gallardo and Moreno, this team is dead in the water because neither Dyachenko nor Fred can run the team from middle of the field.

The immediate needs are 'keeper and midfield. If Doe's scoring streak isn't a fluke, he is a competent third forward and can be supplemented by Tino, Fred or Dyachenko.

Everyone's saying we need to make improvements during the Transfer Window at Wing, Forward and Keeper - I'll include Defender

Realistically, we are what we have right now

We might be able to get a serviceable Outside midfielder but good INEXPENSIVE ones just aren't out there - IF they're really good, they're out of our price-range

Ditto with Forward - Doe appears to do the one thing Addlery and Kpene never could - SCORE - He's not as good as Moreno or Emilio at their best, but he's finally what we've needed as a #3 Forward - This leaves coaches to tinker with Tino once he's recovered

Even moreso with Goallees - Wells in only so-so and improving - But he's never shown (at this year) that he can help us steal games agains the run of play like Perkins did so much in 2006 and 2007 - He was actually VERY good stopping the LA Gals a few times to keep the game in our reach until our Offense took over, but then he drops his concentration significantly in the next games - But unfortunately STARTING Goalles just aren't out there for $150K

So what do we get?- I'd say just get THE BEST player available out there regardless of the position - If thats Defender that means we don't have to tinker with Burch as much and he can find more time at Wing - If thats Forward, then then same thing for Tino at Wing - If Wing, then that pushes Burch to Defense more and Tino more up to Forward

But don't necessarily expect a Super Star or even a Starter - A depth player or even just a real good late game Sub is all that we can expect

PS: What's Donnet doing these days? - If there's one guy down in SA who knows the runs that Gallardo can service and can score, its him - Plus he's probably a serviceable A-Mid to boot - Currently he's only marking time with Belgrano in Argentina

I'm in complete agreement. Moreno & Gallardo are the only guys on the team who exercise true ball control. Take them out and we're at sea. The GK situation may be improved by acquisition so that can conceivably be remedied rather quickly - not to say I predict this. As previously stated, I'm dubious about the chances of fixing the GK and midfield situation in the short term.

I feel we have the makings of a very good and improved team but we're a number of steps away still. A better GK & midfielder of the right bent are most definitely items #1.

There haven't been a lot of responses to this post as of yet but there seems to be a general intimation among the few who have responded that our present weaknesses are likely too much to scale the mountain. That's in line with my assessment.

Agreed. We could use an upgrade/addition anywhere. I'd put defender at the bottom of the list but a single significant improvement in any of the lines will help solidify, a line, and therefore the team as a whole. Said differently, a real deal forward, midfielder or GK would complete one line or another. I believe the defense will come about with present personnel. Another baller in D would lead to one of the best defenses in the league but it's not our most pressing need.

Thanks for starting the thread.

First of all, it was perfectly legitimate to call for Soehn's head at the beginning of the season. Morrow was canned and he had 1/10 the expectations.

I'm sensing lots of love for Burch, and I gotta tell you, the feeling is not ubiquitous. Can't say I enjoy watching him play. For as many good balls as he places in the box, he'll have about five blocked because the defender stands on Burch's left foot. And this season he's been sending numerous switches past a frowning Fred into the advertising boards. The two goals in USOC were great, but you can't go two games later and keep trying to tuck it under a jumping wall. Try something new! I'd rather see someone anonymous back there who doesn't do anything particularly good or bad.

I think you hit it on the head, Wild Turkey, when you talked about injuries. When we had close to a full lineup, we were indomitable. But when Fred gets hurt, or Moreno, or even Quaranta, that's when we lose. The second half of our season will rely solely on the health of our guys. Unfortunately, our schedule is almost as congested as the Nats's.

Yess! I remember he wanted around 250k a year though....I dunno if we could get him on a free transfer, but for 150k i'd def. hop all over that! You'd be surprised how much some of the best players in Arg. get paid. For example Bolivian Defender, one of the best in the last 10 years same goes for Rosario central made 250k a year over there. And he was going to go to River or Boca but politics got in the way. IF hes getting paid that, Donnet is not even getting close to that in Argentina.

But i will agree with what has been said, our coaching staff is terrible. No eye for in house talent. We have all these forwards we are trying to convert to Midfielders??? I;ll tell you one thing, its a talent to be able to hit the ball first time and not over or under hit it, and to slice it perfect. Alot of guys cant do this, and this is the type of guys we should be looking at for wing play, good defense, good foot to cross, can watch their power, and can pass the ball decent. If it wasnt for Burch's over hitting alot this season, and bad defense he could be a top winger in the league IMO.

We need to go out Specific guys for specific spots and not really try and convert them! Do some research on where they used to play growing up at the high 17-18 youth level, judge their touch, skill, passing, crossing, etc. This is something that the US IMO lacks. They look at Physical Attributes over Technique and skill, like football with those combines. Who can bench the most? WHo can run the mile the fastest? BUll crap, same goes with the US soccer HS system. They would make us run 12 under 2 miles or we were almost cut lol.

Thanks for the reply Pseudonym.

I didn't mean to imply that a thoughtful person couldn't call for Soehn's firing, just that there were hotheads who's reaction was we're not doing well out of the gate so fire the coach. I respect anyone's considered assessment of that matter.

I agree Burch has struggled but I feel he's come a long way between the beginning of last season and now and with his being moved to a new position constantly I feel that it's a bit harsh to judge him on the inadequacies he's shown. I may be wrong but if he could play a single position for awhile he might solidify in the position and be a real asset. I'm not sure about this but perhaps even his free kicks would improve. Personally, I feel it's a bit soon to expect him to be golden on those opportunities. Not to dispute your criticism, we should be better in that area. Just as we should on corner kicks which are rather similar.

I disagree here. We've won the Supporter's Shield the last two years and the Cup in '04 because of the coaching staff/front office. I don't see how one can call their decision making terrible. Not 'enough' to be dominant, yes, but not terrible. Do you regret the signing of Emilio, Fred and Gonzalo Martinez? They are significant upgrades and have helped this team tremendously. I again restate that it's our subs that are the weakness and that I would lay at the feet of the coaching staff and front offic.e

We're a good team, we're just not the best team.

I dont doubt them, becasue technically they were found by Kasper. Great pick ups, i criticise the players that were picked up from colleges or scouted from the US system.

Its easy to play martinez where his strengths are, wing/central defender. I could have told you that by just watching him play for Millo' back in the last copa Sudamericana.

I think its our coaching staff, TS and his Chubby assistent that dont know squat on how to play the reserve players or how to turn them into future prospects.

With a better judging of talent coaching staff we could find better gem's in our US system, not just good foreign pick ups through contacts/watching games from all over south america.

How did we find the Olsens, conveys, Sanneh's, Popes, John Massners? Whats the difference between these players, and Burch, Mctavish, and all the others?

To me it was the Talent Evaluators we had in our staff back then compared to now. Arena IMO had a waaay better nose for that than TS and squad do now. Doesnt hurt that he had a connection to UVA either.

I wished he could have some private lessons from Etch' to culture that left foot of his. I know he could teach him a thing or two on keep the ball lower and curve it more(banana).

While this is true, I think Rongen & Johnson have identified Burch's more pressing need, and that is to develop some kind of ability with his RIGHT.
Watch his moves upfield, especially approaching the flank. A lot of his moves are shielding the defender to get back to putting the ball on his left, which by now EVERY defender has seen in what it can do.

His main problem however, unfortunately I feel is largely what's keeping us from being a more consistent even somewhat dominant team. Injuries in key areas are keeping players from filling consistent roles in several key positions, namely - leftback, centerback, rightwing, and leftwing. I leave out forward since I feel Doe is developing more than adequately, given his scoring touch, GK since we're waiting on Carvallo's replacement, or better... and AMid since once Gallardo's healed, that spot should settle back into reforming the attack we were achieveing before SuperLiga. (*4 prior MLS matches- 13 GF avg. 3.25!)
Depth behind Fred on the wings is coming slowly, too slowly for some, but for me I'm satisfied for the future, if roles can be defined going from reserve level to first XI. The tenacity to get at the flanks by Kirk, Thompson and Cordiero have all been impressive enough to hope for more seasoning to see what else they can develop and provide.
Burch and Martinez, arguably two of our players with most potential upsides- have each seen time played at no less than 3 positions so far this year. No doubt if put in more regularly at the same spot more of their upsides get realized.

I am anxious to see more of Carroll, Zaher and Vide to see just how much depth in defenders we have.
And probably the most anxious spot- is seeing Jaime play double duty in both the forward rotation as well as Gallardo's back-up at amid. He's capable, it's just unnerving to hear he's gimpy with hamstring issues( heaven forbid it ends up being a groin!!) match to match. If he goes down before Gallardo gets back.... too ugly to picture. I'd rather we find a servicable backup to Gallardo w/o taking away from needed rest for Jaime, and keep him playing more effectively at forward. What that costs and where to find that player.. ??
The biggest hope for this season is once our dl gets thinned out those same players stay off it well into next season. With only Ben on that list, I like our chances going with the first 16 or so we've already got.(not to mention a whole lot better with Ben OFF it.:p of course, what team isn't better with a healthy heart & soul?)
I'd like them even better with an upgrade at keeper or the addition of a fully developed winger beast, but let's not forget what role lack of chemistry has played already this season.
I expect on the conservative side we will advance to win the US Open, maybe slip disappointingly in the playoffs, but recover to do some damage in our inaugural Champion's League. And while that wouldn't be bad, we might even do better...:)
