This is a very much undecided subject, ever since Gilberto(True legend) was screwed over for his place with Cesc & the traitor came in and went.

A good few candidates up for that place, lets see how it plans out as pre-season performances will definately indicate in Wengers eyes.

My choice is Denilson, as i feel he is now ready for that position. His passing in that position will be an asset and he always fights hard for the ball. If not Denilson, definately Alex Song but i just feel this team needs 2 passers in the central mid as Alex Song is more hustle and bustle even though he does it with class.

Song can pass... pretty underrated there actually... I would loooove for it to be Song, even tho im on the Diaby bandwagon...

Mark Randall wont make it at the club

Wenger has already said Song's future is at CB, and he will let him settle there. That's his best position from what I've seen, and I agree that he should stay there. I currently rate him better than Senderos at CB.

I dunno if I'd put much stock in what Le Boss has to say...Wenger also said Theo's future was out wide, then played him on the wing after he struggled up top. I'm pretty sure Vela will play LW this year too, despie Wenger claiming he's a forward.

I'd actually like to see what Song can do out wide. He doesn't strike me a a wide player, but he got rave reviews at ACN and was primarily used on the wing. At very least, he can't be worse than Diaby was out there.

I dont agree with this at all... Song could be an adequate CB... but he plays it like a DMid, which is not a good look at all... he is not better than Phillipe, not at all, imo...

his best position is at CM, imo... I dont understand why the Charlton loan did not make Wenger see this...

At the start of last season, Arsenal had three excellent defensive mids, Flamini, Gilberto, Diarra all fighting for one spot. Wenger needs to pair Cesc with a defensive minded midfielder of the same quality as those three so Cesc can concentrate on distributing and scoring, imo.

Song can pass.

See that wicked through play he played for Eduardo in the Carling Cup.

If I had to pick from the lot currently at the team, I would pick Song, but he has taken himself out of the running by going to the olympics.

Diaby is the guy who's gonna step up and claim that position.

Denislon has done nothing to show he's capable of being in the CM...he is lightweight and needs to show serious improvement this year..Song though unproven is much better defensively than Denilson and would be a better though not necessarily successful fit .. Diaby also has a lot to prove..if Wenger does'nt bring in a top class player CM this year it's going to be a long year mark my words

Isn't that what they said about Fabregas when he first came in?

Wenger molds raw talent. Denilson has shown that he has that. Let the man do his job

You cant seriously compare Denilson with Cesc, Cesc had played in a champions league final when he was 18, denilson has done nothing and he's nearly 21. Handing him a starting position based on the fact that he has "raw talent" is ludicrous

I bet Denilson gets a serious look against lesser opposition, and that Song gets the nod when the teams are tougher. If you think about it, we're one of the very few top-tier clubs who kept the same midfield for all types of games last year (Carling Cup excluded obviously.) Manchester United preferred Carrick to Hargreaves against weaker opposition, and Chelsea mothballed Makelele for the big occasions. A DM is a great asset, but a deep-lying playmaker combined with a midfielder who gets forward can help you when trying to grind out a win against a team hell bent on camping in the box, which you could argue was our biggest weakness last year.
So in short, I think we're gonna see alot of people playing in the middle this year.

I never said he should get a starting spot. He simply needs more minutes. With a lot of the big competition gone (Gilberto, Flamini, Hleb) he could get time to flourish. The reason Cesc got playing time when he was that young was because of injuries to other starters. Denilson hasn't exactly had that luck.

In regards to Song, if Wenger wants Song as a CB, he will be a CB.

Djourou for me, but only because in FM08 i put him in the middle with Cesc and it worked, and as we all know Football Manager is the bible!

Ding! We have a winner!

If we are going to promote from within (and we will since we need a starter and a backup DM) Djourou will be the guy to get the nod. He is more defensively sound than Diaby/Denilson etc. and has already stated his preference to play in midfield.

If he can pass worth a damn I don't see how we he won't get the job.

I tried that... and it was a disaster...

im thinking about signing Kompany and selling Gallas, but Djourou's potential in that game is

I think this question could be more answerable as the pre-season games happen .. But i can think of only Denilson & Song who could possibly play as a DM ..
