I'm sure we're all puzzled by the Robert Green story and rumors; he signs a 5-year contract last summer with a review agreed for 2009; but now, after a good season and lots of praise, he allegedly says he's not being treated well enough by the club and obviously wants more money.
What's the point of signing an agreement if it can be ignored at will? I believe not only should both parties strictly abide by the contract, but also that the terms cannot be changed unless agreed to by both.
I actually think no contract should be more than 1 year, and the 2nd year terms should be based on past performance; if a striker scores 20 goals, give him a raise; if he scores 3, give him less! What will happen with Green if he starts letting in lots of goals; he'll blame the defence of course, and they'll blame him. In any case, I think he now becomes a potential for sale, and I would have thought he was one player no-one wanted to lose.
