View Full Version : Reviving the CL Prediction contest...

I'm thinking of reviving the old CL Prediction contest. It died awhile back when I ran out of time to do the scoring and nobody stepped up to take it over. I'm expecting a lighter schedule this season so I'd like to revive the contest. However to keep the scoring manageable I'm setting a hard cap on the number of players. In addition to this forum mods, 30 players can join. Reply below if you'd like a spot, whether you played the CL prediction game here in the past, and whether you can commit to participating throughout the upcoming season.

If we get a quick response, I'd like to start with the second qualifying round starting July 29th using the rules below:

In each of the two match days of the second qualifying round, 2 points per correct result plus 1 bonus point if you correctly predict the score.

In each of the two match days of the third qualifying round, 3 points per correct result plus 2 bonus points if you correctly predict the score.

In the Group Phase, in each of 6 match days, 5 points for each correct result plus 3 bonus points if you correctly predict the score.

In the first knockout round, in each of 2 match days, 7 points for each correct result plus 4 points if you correctly predict the score.

In the quarterfinals, in each of 2 match days, 9 points for each correct result plus 5 points if you correctly predict the score.

In the semifinals, in each of 2 match days, 12 points for each correct result plus 8 points if you correctly predict the score.

In the final match, 20 points for predicting the winner plus 10 points if you correctly predict the score. If you predict a draw for the game and correctly pick the winner (whether it's after extra time or via penalty kicks), then you can earn another 10 points.

Also - a note about the format of the scores posted in the prediction threads. There are a few formats that work well and a few that don't.
1) Always keep the order of the games listed EXACTLY as they are in the first post of the thread. This is THE most important thing for me.
2) Always post the two scores together separated by hyphen (-). It doesn't matter whether the scores are before, between or after the teams names - just put them together.
3) Also - no extraneous comments amongst the posts - I just have to strip them out.
The following are good posts...
Liverpool 2-0 AC Milan
2-0 Liverpool v. AC Milan
Liverpool v. AC Milan 2-0
The following create problems for me.
Liverpool 2 v. AC Milan 0
Liverpool 2 v. 0 AC Milan
Liverpool loses 2-0 (this would actually get recorded in my program as predicting a win by Liverpool).
Liverpool 1-1 AC Milan - Pool wins in wins in ET 2-1.

I am also thinking of adding a goal difference aspect to the scoring to better reward players that predict well but miss the exact score.

Thoughts? Interest?

Good news.

bspsoccer has offered to run the CL Prediction contest. bspsoccer has a scoring system in place so there will be no need to cap players.

I'll leave it to bspsoccer to post the details as we get closer to the next phase.
