Per Behind The Badge (http://www.behindthebadge.com/2008/07/carvallo-released.php)
We'll officially announce shortly that we've released goalkeeper Jose Carvallo (http://dcunited.mlsnet.com/players/bio.jsp?team=t103&player=carvallo_j&playerId=car680577&statType=current). The Peruvian joined United on January 28 of this year, but never really fought his way into the first team. He made a lone first team appearance on April 12 when the team lost to Real Salt Lake 4-0. He also made six reserve team appearances (five starts), putting together a 2-2-1 record and 1.22 goals-against-average.

Released Carvallo and Niell and signed Vide and Thompson....
How much money do we have in the coffers and how many roster spots exactly?

Thomspn's developmental salary does not count against the cap as he took Jeff Curtin's roster spot.
DCU gains $15K on the Vide and Carvallo swap in terms of salary $.
So, DCU has one senior roster spot open (Niell's old one - he made $150K) and at a minimum (depending on how much cap space they had before these roster moves) an annualized salary ($165K) to use on a new player. The challenge is that they still need another goalie who will likely be a senior roster player if he is at least a decent back-up - so they could perhaps acquire a foreign-based goalie (i.e. ex-Fire Matt Pickens) or field player and then acquire a cheap back-up goalie and remove another senior roster player (i.e. cut one, move one to developmental roster and cut someone already there, move a player to season-ending injured reserve).

I have to think that releasing Carvallo now means we have an immediate target in mind, otherwise we would have released him two weeks ago.

Yeah but who the people are is the question. I heard we went after the former Wolfsburg keeper. But other than that i dont know. Matt pickens is a option.

Best of luck to Jose...hope we go after Pickens. At least we know he is a reliable MLS keeper.

I've been championing Matt Pickens for the past three months. I'll start calling myself Nostradmus Jr. if that actually comes to pass. Hell, in the past week, I already called us picking up Vide and the semfinalists for the Open Cup.

So with Carvallo gone, who's the back-up keeper now?

Thorpe. Infact he's been the 2nd keeper for a while... i wonder why though??? What did Carvallo do? He showed alot of promise and seemed decent in some clip off of youtuve on my Carvallo thread.

Seeing a 30-second clip on youtube doesn't compare to coaches watching a player in practice for months.
I have to think that they saw something (or didn't see something) that made them believe that Carvallo wasn't a viable option here, and I have no basis for second-guessing them.

Yea somethings up... from what i understood also he was a sub goalkeeper at La U when he left, as his starting spot got taken from him. He did get a Cap so far vs. bolivia which is pretty good.
But still, why didnt tommy give him some chances? Is he really that stubborn and set on players as people make him out to be? Or did jose get caught doing something bad and got on the bad side of coaching and staff? Hes pretty young, 22. It sucks becasue if this was South American press we'd find out by now. :p But becasue all we got is goff who really cant get much out of our FO when it comes to hush hush topics than who knows! My guesse is as good as yours.
But regardless, hopefully he can stay in the MLS or go somewhere in South America where he can succeed. Seemed like a rreal nice guy too. Lets hope We get someone nicer than Wells even though hes been playing pretty good IMO recently.

Yeah, but a lot of that stuff is :
Monday - Emilio getting interest from Mexican teams
Tuesday - Emilio getting interest from Atlante
Wednesday - DCU says Emilio isn't for sale
Thursday - Emilio says he's happy at DC United
Friday - Atlante's forward injured, will they offer more for Emilio
Next Monday - Atlante offers more for Emilio
Next Tuesday - DC United no longer taking calls from Atlante
Two Mondays after that - Atlante still interested in Emilio:p
