Washington Examiner reporting that DCU will sign Joe Vide to a senior contract to essntially take the spot vacated by Franco Niell. Vide is a 24 year old D-Mid from UVA who played last year for the New York and this year for San Jose before they recently cut him.
He is young enough to still be a developmental roster option but someone would have to get cut to do it.

when he played (or sat on the bench, I forget which) for a NYRB match at RFK a few years back, I had the joy of sitting a row behind Vide's girlfriend and her family.
with Olsen's status up in the air, I assume this signing is mostly an attempt by DC United to ensure that a UVA product will always be on the roster.

We could use the depth. If he's got local ties (girlfriend, UVA) he might be more willing to play for the wage he'll be offered.
We'd still be able to free up another senior roster spot by releasing Carvallo, couldn't we?

Yes. We could also waive one of our lower-priced players (cough*Dyachenko*cough), trade a player, or put someone on the season-ending IR list.
I also get the feeling that Vide could come in as a developmental player. He would get an opportunity to earn a senior roster spot during the offseason.

Not a senior spot for Niell. We have 150K to play with. Give him a developmental spot for 30K. Otherwise, USL is looking pretty good. Unless, Stratford is out for the season which I don't believe is the case.

Examiner article says Vide is getting a minimum senior contract. Cutting Dyachenko would please some of the most prolific BigSoccer posters but would be pretty stupid given our current depth problems.

Most reports (although not the DCU press release) seem to indicate that he will keep the current contract that he has (minimum $ senior roster contract - $33K) - which is somewhat typical of a player acquired via waivers in MLS.

We're at the point where we're signing players that couldn't make it on the worst team in the league.

Given this state can anyone realistically expect DC to win anything this year!!!

In this whole big universe with soccer clubs on every continent (except perhaps Antartica), you mean to say that DCU can't find any more decent players? I don't expect another Gallardo or even a Benny but there's got to be someone decent out there that we can sign.
Granted, I don't know all the fiddly DP, overseas, and only when the planets are aligned on the 2nd Tuesday of the month rules but I'm sure there are people out there if we look long and hard enough - which I assume is being done.

There is a reason why San Jose is bad, same as there is a reason why the re-branded Red Bull New York is bad. Bad coaching.
I think Vide will get significant playing time with DC United.
And I can see a lineup that would include him.
Namoff-Peralta-McTavish-Martinez
-------Vide-----Simms-----------
------Gallardo-----Fred-----------
-----Moreno--------Emilio---------
With Doe and Quaranta as backup forwards, Burch as backup Left-mid/back, and Thompson backup right mid.
One of the problems that I saw against Atlante (and against Chivas) was that there was a lot of quick pressure on the defense because the midfielders were soft on their defensive assignments (and lets face it everyone loves to see DC United attack with numbers [myself included], even with defenders joining the attack, but against skillful teams with speed one defensive midfielder is not going to be able to hold down the fort). Having 2 defensive midfielders will address that problem which I think will be a plus.

That was quick. I actually suggested this yesterday in the "Other Teams" thread as a way to give us some sorely needed depth at midfield. Not a bad pickup, IMO.

Of course, they had to do that in order to fit in Huckerby, Sealy, and Lima. I saw him as a victim of the numbers game. Corrales has pretty much owned the position for the season (both good and bad), and Vide was stuck behind him as a sub. Now that they've signed Francisco Lima (a d-mid expected to take over for Corrales), Vide would be even further down on their depth chart.

Amen again! Wow, our FO/coaching decision making is frightening. If your going for cheap /quick fix use the reserves we already have. That's what should have ben done in the last game rather than continue to exhaust the players we have left that don't require surgery, YET!

I only suggested that waiving a player was one way to open up another roster spot. We could just as easily put Ben or Domenic on the SEIR list or trade somebody for a draft pick or allocation money.
But I don't think having Dyachenko helps our depth problems one way or the other.

So what defensive midfielder would that be? Jeff Carroll is out injured, Stratford's coming off a surgery, and there's no one after that who plays the same position. At the very least, Vide has experience in this league and has shown an ability to play at a decent level. There's no fear of a "deer in the headlights" performance like Stratford did in his first few games.

That's a little flip, I think. Not fitting in with a team doesn't mean you're bad.
Vide is a decent player, not a great one, but he could definitely be useful for us.

Useful like Thompson has been. But we probably won't win anything with Thompson and Vide in the starting lineup for the rest of the season.
He's just another in the long line of Thiago Martins-Tim Lawson-Matias Donnet-Lucio Filomeno-Robert Ssejjemba-John Wilson-Dominic Mediate-GR Cannon's of the world. A quick response to a pressing need on the roster. Sure, if he stays around for five more years he's more likely to wind up a Bryan Namoff-caliber player. But if he had that in him, NY (or SJ) would have never let him go in the first place.
Thx,
Jay!

This is a great signing. He is a young prospect at 24 and is in his second year as a pro. He also played 4 years in the 1860 Munich system. Give him time to develop and he will be on the Nats. We need more young american players like this on our team.
Great signing with an awesome pedigree. 1860 Munich and a he was a star in college soccer. Not too mention he plays tough and he can teach Cuahtemoc Blanco or Beckham a thing about soccer. We need people like this in our team with bite. :D
