I need to get over there soon. I am just not sure when (perhaps March, perhaps later). I want to visit the 1860 facility while I am there.
A visit should always coincide with a bier festival. Might I suggest the Maibock festival? Is the same time as the asparagus festival, weather is better, end of season so you get to see footy, the bier gartens are open and warm and just about every bier they make (save the Maerzen) is available. :D

I had thought about that. I am a huge fan of the Maibocks, as well as the Dopplebocks, so Starkbierzeit is always a nice option. But I agree, the nicer weather would be a HUGE plus.
I would love to get a handful of guys to go, but none of the guys I know can break away for a week or so.

What about Paulaner beer? What is the story? They have it at some groceries in Hville, was thinking about grabbing a 6.

Ok, my baised take on Paulaner:
Used to be one of many "named" Muenchen breweries, but is now a big-ass (and that's a technical business term) conglomerate. But what isn't these days. They actually own Hacker-Pschorr, Thurn und Taxis, Paulaner and a few other smaller breweries which either brew Paulaner biers or their own smaller labels. they were bought by the Heineken empire a few years back.
They are the bier of FC Bayern but I still like it. They do make one of the best Weissbiers in Bayern.
Like any self-respecting Bayrisch brewery they have several standard biers they brew:
Helles: You typical lager. What you get when you simply say "Ein Bier bitte."
Pils: Frankly, am not a big German pils fan. Like the Czech style myself (see Budvar).
Weissbier: Singularly the most popular bier form in Bayern. They make a helles (light in color...but not lite), dunkel (dark) or kristal (which filters out the yeast...what's the point in that?). They also make lite and alcohol free versions which they sell at the stadium. Pure swill.
Dunkel or Muenchener: This is your dark lager. Brewed like a Helles but they use a special malt actually called Muenchenermaltz. Real man's bier.
Urtyp: This is the man's man bier. Even stronger than the Dunkel.
Doppelbock: Salvator is one of the best doppelbocks there is.
Maerzen or Oktopberfest: Special biers brewed in March (hence the name Maerzen or March bier) and lagered in caves over the summer and tapped at Oktoberfest. Seriously, the still lager this bier under the mountain where the Salvator Keller is in Meunchen.
Paulaner does make other offshoots in the lite or diet category, but the F is the point, right? Contrary to popular belief, the Maerzen is not the most powerful of the biers. Most Americans goes to Oktoberfest thinking the bier is 8% or 10% alcohol by volume....it ain't. At least not Paulaner. Actually the strongest biers are the dopplebocks or some maibocks which top out around 7.5%. I think Salvator is the strongest Paulaner produces directly at 7.9%. Hacker-Pschorr makes Animator which is over 8% by volume. Notice teh 1860 official bier is stronger than the FC Bayern official bier?:D

Goals from Lauth and Kusuckovic, prepped by Berhalter and Ledgerwood (respectively) lead 1860 to a 2-0 win. Will translate the story later but the 1860 website artilce is here (http://www.tsv1860.de/de/saison/profis/dfb-pokal/1-_runde/2007/pokal1_2008-08-10_neustrelitz-1860.php).

If Bayern do not rectify that shaky defence, they will not make it to the final.

I am not sure anyone really knows what to expect from 1860 until the match is kicked off. But, to me, I think they start this term off well with a 2-1 win over SCF.

Cup game and EVERYONE is up for a game against Bayern. They won't let that happen again. At least, not until they play 1860 in the quarter finals.:D

2-1 for SCF. They are always very, very tough at home and this year will be no different. I will be curious to see how SCF looks with their new acquisitions. I have always held a close place in my heart for SCF. Good team, great town and good fans.

This might help explain what happened in the DFB-Pokal quarterfinal last year and also give SC Freiburg the advantage this weekend.:)

ROFL....well, maybe. Could be that Bayern has a strangle hold on the DFB and that referees, who are a very political bunch, will do what they can to get more prestegeous games that Bayern plays?

Boy if you ever thought that the DFB Pokal was not that important for clubs like 1860, think again. Every club making the second round gets 227,133 Euros. Making the thrid round gets you 454,267 Euros. So making the 1/4 finals last year surely netted 1860 some play money for investing in transfers, etc. For a club like ours this is real $$$. Bayern will simply sqaunder it on buying players to sit on their bench, to bail their players out of jail or pay off referees.

The DFB Pokal money is much improved this season due to the new TV contract with Premiere.

As something of an aside... I was looking through the 1860 online shop and noticed the CDs of song and chants... I was wondering if anyone (perhaps here in the States) would have copies of these I could test drive...? They seem like a lot of fun and, as I hope to be attending my first Sechzig match when I visit next spring, I would be excited to hear them. Of course, when I am in Muenchen, I am sure I will spend a fortune in the gift shop.
Thanks in advance!
