Someone take a large pin and stick in in my arse to wake me!!!!

According to the 1860 website, Berkant Goektan has be released from 1860 effective immediately for testing positive for cocaine use (http://translate.google.com/translate?u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.tsv1860.de%2Fde%2Faktuell%2Fnews%2F2008%2Fnews_2008-10-21-goektan_kuendigung.php&hl=en&ie=UTF-8&sl=de&tl=en) (German version here (http://www.tsv1860.de/de/aktuell/news/2008/news_2008-10-21-goektan_kuendigung.php)).

Now, as much as I hate what this does to the club, from a human perspective, I am devastated as to what this does to Goektan. This guy had SOOOO much potential as a youth player with Bayern and f'ed that up. Then, relegated to playing pick-up games in the Englischergarten, 1860 took him into camp and gave him his second chance. He seems to have f'ed that up totally. While I am very disappointed in the loss of so talented a player, I truly hope he can get his life together and find his place in the world. Things like this have a tendancy of not turning out well. I with him the best.:o

According to this Kicker article, (http://www.kicker.de/news/fussball/2bundesliga/startseite/artikel/384303/) Berkant Göktan has been FIRED by 1860 for COCAINE ABUSE!!

I believe the article says Göktan rejected the club's offer to get him help and therefore they had no alternative but to dissolve his contract.

Reuter is quoted as saying: “I am so sad we are forced to such a measure. However, this is no longer about Berkant Göktan the player, but about Berkant Göktan the person. For this reason and in view of the personal nature of this situation, we ask that you understand the club will not comment further on the subject. We hope and wish that Berkant Göktan gets his life under control once again.”

Can Garry or any other German speakers/readers out there check this to make sure I got these parts correct??

But I'm certain it says 1860 fired Göktan.

As you see, we were probably sending our messages at the same time. I was preparing an e-mail to send to you too.

I have to agree with that you said in wishing him the best.

Man, I know this is above football, but I do feel for the club.

When it rains, it f#cking pours on 1860!!! :(

Here's the bundesliga.de article (http://www.bundesliga.de/de/liga2/news/2008/index.php?f=0000109524.php&fla=1). English translation here (http://translate.google.com/translate?u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.bundesliga.de%2Fde%2Fliga2%2Fnews%2F2008%2Findex.php%3Ff%3D0000109524.php%26fla%3D1&hl=en&ie=UTF-8&sl=de&tl=en).

Sadly, he is made of Kryptonite now. He is over. No one in Europe will touch him. Hell, I doubt ANYONE will touch him. Perhaps he can rehab and join the Galaxy at some point (really only half kidding here). I cannot see any serious league taking a chance on him now. If he truly wants to play football at some point perhaps he can come to MLS. But that is WAYYYYY out of the picture right now. He is fighting for his life right now...seriously. Having twice washed out of something he loves, his mental state cannot be great.

I think if he eventually goes to rehab and gets a clean bill of health, someone in the 2nd or 3rd Bundesligas will take a chance on him.

But what is alarming to me about this subject is that he apparently rejected offers of help from the club.

I'm betting he told them he either didn't do it or it was a one-time thing.

Daum's storm eventually blew over and I don't think Göktan's will be anywhere near as big.

But nothing will happen until he realizes and admits there is a problem...... :o

Holy crap!

Other have rehabbed from this, but of course he's going to have to want to fight for it. Heck if he were Steve Howe (Dodgers pitcher) they gave that guy 7 chances.

Right. And football over here is what baseball is to us.

Göktan is a good enough player to get offers from the lower leagues.

In my opinion, he was already just about finished as far as making it back to the 1st Bundesliga.

This confirms it.

But if he ever wants to go to MLS, maybe Josh Wolff would put in a good word for him.......

Yeah, but I cannot think of a footballer that has come back from something like this AND already having the reputation as someone who f's himself up every 2 years.

Face it, the guy had ego problems which caused him to bounce around from Bayern, FCK, BMG, Bielefeld, Galatasary, Besiktas and now 1860 since 1999. With that track record, his head problems, his ego and now the label of drug user, I think he is done in Germany. His pride is HUGE. He had to swallow it when 1860 signed him after hitting rock bottom. He started out on a month-to-month contract with the IIs providing he prove that he could show signs of "the old Berkant" were no longer present. After staying in line and performing (while Kurz was IIs coach) he eventually worked his way on to the first team. The dude had the town at his feet. Guess what? The old Berkant showed back up.:o

No, I think few will want him. And, even if they do want him, the offer will be so low as to make his pride kick in and he will not take it.

I truly hope he can get his life in gear and get out of this. Reuter, to his credit, is not giving up on Berkant and is continuing to press the issue of club help. While there is no hope of him rejoining 1860, my bet is Stefan is telling him he needs to focus on life after football. Daum has proven one can over come THAT side of things. But as a player I think he is done....sadly.

Dude, like you have no idea.

If I had been relegated to playing pick-up games in the park and got a second chance you better believe I would have been on the straight path from the beginning. This type of narcissistic behaviour is hard to beat out of a person. I think he needs a few months at Betty Ford and 10,000 hours of community service.

DAMN this is depressing.

We've had the talent argument. I'm not going there again. I'll just say his problems with those clubs wasn't just "ego....."

Life will kick him in the ass sooner rather than later. He'll be back. Watch.

Disagree, but my disagreement all depends on his getting his head out of his ass in a decent amount of time.

And I'm speaking in general. I'm not the Göktan expert you seem to be.

Let's just say the Turkish expat community is a small one in Muenchen and I used to play with several who know him well.

A few interviews from eyep-tv:

Here (http://www.eyep.tv/sport/eyenews/eyenews-1860-entlasst-berkant-goktan.html)...and if you can't understand her no your German does not suck, she is speaking Bayrisch.

Wow, that is a huge shock about Göktan. But I can only say the numbskull did this to himself.

I doubt any German team will touch him, since I'd expect a DFB suspension as well. As far as the club is concerned, they did the right thing.

Back to football, now that Berkant's contract is off the books is there any way Reuter can loan in a few midfielders? Or do we have to wait until the Winterpause for reinforcements...

Well, that's just it. Most players of any worth have already found clubs. We will now need to start sniffing around to see about players who are falling out of favor with their current clubs (read: search the dregs for a decent signing).

I would LOVE if 1860 signed Kenny Cooper. I think he would help a great deal. Though not a play-maker he does fill the role Berki was filling AND he is great in the air. So, assumign Schroth never does find his way back on a ptich, Cooper is a nice, young prospect who is a cheap solution for 1860. He has Kusuckovic's size, Berhalter's power in the air, the dibbling skills of Goektan and he is FAST!!!! Not saying that he WILL be a success, but he is certainly a cheap option for 1860. Shit, why they are not scouting MLS for cheap solutions is beyond me. Yeah, yeah, I can har Keith now about how MLS sucks (and I don't disagree), but when you need cheap, decent players MLS is a good market to scout.

I'm shocked that he was offered a lifeline, help from his club, and he declined it fully in the knowledge that it would get him fired. Why would he do that????:? It makes no sense. Unless he's really deep into the coke and doesn't even wanna quit... I hope that's not the reason, I hope it's just his arrogance and honour that prevent him from admitting he had messed up.

I do think if he got himself in shape a relegation-fighting 2. Liga side or some side like would hire him. He's not a bad player, and he'd be useful for a bunch of teams. If he decides to resume his career one day, and can get back into shape, there'll be offers.

That is what worries me most of all. That is Britanny Spears-type behavior. That is not the actions of a rational person. Something is very wrong OR we only have part of the story.

I think something is very wrong with him. He's probably hooked on the shit.

Or, it was truly a one time thing and he was insulted they took it that far.

I'd say he's hooked on the shit.

Like I said, he was clean for 18 months prior and then popped positive recently. Depression from the injury and the "exhaustion" syndrome?

Okay, the grassy knoll conspiracy theorist in me says this:
(Note, the following is PURE conjection and paranoia on my part...ABSOLUTELY no truth in the following words AT ALL...)

Goektan picks up an injury this summer and perhaps slips into a depression, starts using coke.
He pops up positive for cocaine during a screening for his injury.
To cover the drug use 1860 diagnoses him with "exhaustion syndrome" and makes him to to therapy to get ride of the drug use.
Goektan attends sessions since early August but 1860 management gets reports that no progress is being made OR he pops positive again.
1860 mgmt sits down with Goektan to discuss how to make positive steps towards recovery and he denies there is a problem or something like that.
This forces 1860 to say that help was denied and he is fired.
Anyway, just my hypothetical as to why someone would be so stupid. The truth is always FAR more entertaining though.;)

Kenny Cooper won't be cheap. Probably more than €1.5 million.

If 1860 was B1 they could try and get Dempsey on loan.

Really? He makes less than 80k a year? Is that MLS just trying to get a transfer fee? No wonder the other clubs have stalled their interest. I would take him on trial but not sure I would sign him unless he produced. When is his contract up? Perhaps we could get him then?

BTW, I sent a not to 1860's scouting team on him. Doubt they will listen but.....
