Meh. I didn't have high hopes for this tournament to begin with (too many injuries to major contributors), and this game didn't help any. It showed that Burch is too raw at CB for right now, that Thompson has his moments, and that Dyachenko is better as a sub than as a starter. However, we already knew those things coming in to tonight's game, so the result wasn't a total shock.

I liked Q's spirit, though. His fire is missed with the absence of Olsen on the field. I also liked that Emilio is still scoring and making opportunities on his own. And Martinez is still a beast.

...in which our heroes learn that hitting soft crosses too close to the end-line will get them consistently picked off by a decent keeper.

Oh, yeah, and stop me if you've heard this one before: our defender is one-on-one with an opposing attacker at about midfield. A long ball is played towards the attacker to try to get a break. The defender, who -- and this is important -- doesn't have any backup, challenges for the ball and misses...

And to top all, it look like 'Tino re-pulled that hammie about five minutes from full time.

Another poor game by our guys. This one is on the defenders. The play of Burch, McTavish and Namoff was terrible. Not only wiffing on attempts to breakup attacks but not covering for each other numerous times. Namoff's lack of pressure led directly to the open shot on the last goal.

The attack did little to help the situation. Time and again the passing was just plain poor. Too many times the players were looking at each other and appeared to be saying where the f*** was that pass supposed to be going or why the f*** didn't you make the run. This is too far into the season for the players not to be on the "same page".

When halftime came, I saw Soehn rip off his tie and stomp off to the dressing room. I would have liked to have heard what he had to say.

I know that injuries are a problem at this time, but I think the DCU braintrust have their work cut out for them during the off season. I hope the team can have better performances when they start playing the less demanding teams in MLS.

First time since '96 in supporting this team that I actually walked into RFK hoping United would lose. Ugly on the field, but a great result for the club overall. Play full reserves on Saturday, focus on the league match Tuesday. Then sit back and enjoy the time off retooling for August while other clubs have to worry about facing extra meaningless matches in late July.

Hopefully the club has the sense next year to actually sit this silly tournament out.

My "meh" take on the game. I didn't think we did too badly and I wasn't about to poke my eye out with a stick like I was at the begining of the season.

I do think that is shows that say what you want about him, Peralta is needed in the back line. He ain't graceful and he's a bit of a moose but he makes a big difference in the back line.

I also don't understand why we have to wait until the planets are aligned correctly to take a shot on goal. I understand that we don't want to throw the ball away with needless turnovers but jimminy crickets people, if we're down by 1 and it's the last 10 minutes, don't try and make it all pretty - just shoot the ball and let Emillio clean it up.

Thompson played well but he's still green. I have high hopes for him. Rod wasn't bad either. I'm not a huge fan but he had some nice hustles in there for a change.

Burch needs to be on the wings. He doesn't have the mentality to be in the center.

I'm surprised that Jaime stayed in for the full 90 mins and he was probably part of the reason Rod hustled a bit more.

Always happy to see Tino on the pitch. I hope he's good for the Houston games or at least the rescheduled MLS one.

I think Wells plays better when there's a back line to help him out. The whole defense needs to go out for a big group bonding experience like a pub crawl or a really crappy camping trip. They just aren't clicking and many times they were practically non-existant.

Eh, I wish our guys would have hustled more but on the other hand, none of them went off injured.

Disgraceful display by DC United.
Agreed.

The backline and defending were horrible. The line was around midfield on the first two goals. Wells was being left to dry and a lot of his bad decisions and positioning were a result of thinking he had to come off his line since his defense wasn't going to cover him. Midfield? That was some of the most uninspired play I have seen from United. They were masturbating all over the place. Nobody wanted to shoot or even put the ball in the box. Atlante had gaps all over the place and a high line waiting to be exploited in the first half and DC did nothing. The keeper wasn't even tested for much of the match. Although he actually played like he wanted to win and added a lot in his time, I had a lot of problems with Q coming in and hated seeing him hold his hamstring like that after a few minutes. Dyachenko haters... have at it.

Why the ******** did the crowd suck so much? Most of the 12,000 or so people there were almost as disappointing and as the team's play. I thought they both were asleep.

I agree the guys in front of me could well have been at a baseball game-- they were so busy talking about crap unrelated to the game. One guy was even turned around not facing the field at all. WTF is up with that.

Sadly, spot on. I have this fantasy that on a club level we can take on the Mexicans. Sorry friends, not close. I think DC's soccer brain as a unit just ain't there. Last time there was always two midfielders collapsing on out A-mid, so they'd play it back and lose it on a long ball to the wings.

Tonight, Burch was playing center back like he was a wing. I remember Eddie Pope making his rare excursions into the attack. There was always someone back. Burch threw himself forward when he didn't have adequate cover (out of position on goal #1). Let's face it, he has been a back for all of a year. Next to him is McTavish, with precious little more experience.

Now, start Thorpe in goal, Chico as A-mid and Talon as striker. Tell Jaime and Fred and Luci to do liquid rounds somewhere safe. Hell, give Soehn and Simpson jerseys (anyone remember Simpson's foray into the striker position? I wish I had that taped.)

Priority one: the Shield. Number two: MLS cup, three USOC (though this is more important than in the past). Get the Shield and let the Cup take care of itself.

We lost, the sun will rise tomorrow. We were in both games, things didnt go our way (Posts, missed PK's, missing Gallardo). We still have a good team. Doe had a nice finish, Emilio keeps scoring, good minutes for everyone. Now the reserves get some TV time, maybe we see someone besides Wells in goal. Is Carvallo still in town? It's all good. My priorities would be:

1. MLS Cup
2. CCL
3. US Open Cup
4. Supporters Sheild
5. CCC
6. SuperLiga

So far we're following my priorities very well. Tanking in last two.

I can't believe how happy everyone is with this pathetic display (Superliga sucks, we have 8 more importatnt tournaments, etc). We were the home team, we clearly had more to offer than Atlante in the early going. We put EVERYONE forward and guess what? We got burned!

One goal, I understand. Twice, no way. Not against this team. Atlante is not a quality Mexican side like Chivas.

I'm still focused on Soehn, who has had a horrid record in playoff, one-off, soccer. In his last two matches we showed clear tactical errors. Why did it take us until halftime to react against Chivas? Why were we unprerpared for th eobvious counterattack against an inferior Atlante? Our defense is friggin swiss cheese.

If Soehn doesn't win a tournament (US Open, CCL) , the league (no way) or MLS Cup, he will be fired.

My guess is that he only has a shot at th US Open Cup. That won't be enought to save his job.

I hope we have a new coach prior to CCL.

Hey, I can't disagree with you man. We could have easily won this match, even with this lineup, if we weren't so tactically inferior. I'd definitely add the Open Cup match against Chicago to your tally as well. Chicago was clearly going long ball all match against us and it took us 70 minutes to adjust to that.

I just can't get worked up about being eliminated from a tournament I didn't want us to participate in to begin with.

Disgraceful display by DC United.

Pretty much. We played abougt 30 minutes of a 90 mintue match. That is NOT going to win you any football matches. We were terrible for long stretches. Granted, they brought it in the last 10 mintues and in stoppage, but that just was not enough.

I just hope they are getting all this ugly losing out of the way now, so we can resume league play in form like we were before this tournament.

that is all.

From the first moments I thought Atlante looked terrible and it was also just as obvious that DC was playing down to the level of its opponent.

To give Atlante some credit I thought they stayed pretty well organized defensively but they didn't strike me as any better than most MLS sides.

DC flat out phoned it in and I have to admit as a fan I sort of did too. Hey, I wouldn't have complained if we'd won this tournament but it is such a useless make-work competition that I hope we've seen the last of it.

I love the take on this game when its your team that loses

Well it was the reserves, its a silly tourny, wow cares.

But if you win, its like were the best..those Mexican teams have nothing on us.

However it was a great game and I enjoyed it but in all reality Atlante got wooped by Houston and didnt even make the mexican playoffs.. and is on exhibition seeason right now

DC just got it handed to them by a bad Mexican team..HAHAHA i really enjoyed it. So how wack is DC??

Umm first of all, we playd a great match VS Chivas, they were the better side, and they got a bit lucky. We hit 2 posts, and a saved PK. Dont get much luckier than that. MEX clubs have now won 2 matches ever aginst DC at home. yeah, they are dominating us. Whatever, troll.

BTW....asshole, you are TROLLING, Get out , Good Riddance, and good bye. You are not even an Atlante supporter. You are one of those assholes that make your whole coutnry look bad. Piss off.

I don't know if it's been mentioned yet but technically, you guys can still make the semis. If you beat us by 3 and Atlante loses to Chivas Saturday, you're in. I'm just saying it's possible. Of course, if you want to play your reserves Saturday and rest your starters for the MLS game Tuesday, I'm all for that. :D
