The Aztex are asking for our opinion (http://www.austinaztex.com/index.html) on player of the year.

They've set a July 18 deadline, so any outstanding achievements in El Paso can't be considered.

My inclination is to wait until after this weekend to send in my vote.

At the moment, I'm split between Jamie Watson and Miguel Gallardo. I'll be adding a poll to this once I figure out how to make it happen. And, yeah, I went overboard with the choices, but, hey I've seen good stuff from so many players and, doing stats, I get focused on trees rather than the forest.

It will be interesting to see if our vote matches what the Aztex get.

Gotta go with my boy Miguel. Always a team player, always solid and just a good guy all around.

Gallardo deserves his props for the job he's done. But, it's been a lot easier with the likes of Alcala in front of him. It's not without reason that you don't see Gallardo anywhere on the Saves Leaders list on USL Stats (http://www.uslsoccer.com/stats/2008/Top10.8630213.2.html); #10 on the list has almost twice as many saves as Miguel.

So I have to go with my boy.

To argue the other direction -- it seems to me that (besides the solid defensive corp in front of him) one reason Gallardo doesn't have to make many saves is because he's very smart at coming out. He does a very good job taking care of crosses and cleaning up behind the defense, so he just doesn't face that many shots.

The stats sheet includes a 'shots faced' but that's not listed on the goalkeeper stats page. Seems to me that would be one way to measure how good the defense is. Maybe if I have some time I'll try and figure out the numbers for other teams.

I've been thinking lately that would be a fun name for the supporters group.

Well, being as we lost both games this weekend, and Josh Alcala wasn't there, I'm going to have to say that he's our most important player. I was wavering between Gallardo and Watson (who scored again this weekend), but looking at the results I decided to go with Josh.

Jaime "The Bird" Watson has got my vote hands down. He's got seven goals in less than 16 games, he's still a young un soo he's still got loads of potential and yrs of playing ahead of him, and he's are assists leader as well as our goal leader.

Without argument for me Jaime "The Bird" Watson

Well, the poll is now closed, because the votes have to be into the Aztex by tomorrow. And Josh Alcala wins it going away. There were 79 votes. If no-one voted twice or more (that never happens on web polls!;)) I'm very impressed with the number of votes. I guess we have quite a few lurkers!

40 Josh Alcala
22 Miguel Gallardo
8 Jamie Watson

I guess blogging helps:)

I like that a few others got one or two votes:

Allen, Westley; Godbolt, AJ; Guadarrama, Willy; Lewis, Ezzy; Martinez, Robin; Papandrea, Beto; da Luz, Austin.

It will be interesting to see how the email votes end up.

I would have figured that Jamie Watson would have gotten more votes than he did. But, I'm happy so many people agreed with me. :)

President's Award: Kay Rawlins. Seemed to me that Phil was a little embarrassed to give this one out, but he said that everyone he asked for their opinion said that it should be given to Kay.

Oh, and one other very nice touch -- Phil said that of all the successes he's had, this one is the one that he most appreciates. Or something to that effect.

I'm ready for next season to start:) Or, maybe I should say, I'm not ready for this season to be over. Everyone I talked to was optimistic that, if we can win the next two games, we'd host a national semifinal. But maybe that was just club optimism.

So if we win on Friday do we have to win one more that weekend?

So if we win on Friday do we have to win one more that weekend?

There's a more detailed thread on this (The Bradenton Thread), but the short answer is if we beat Bradenton Friday, then we would play the winner of the Central Florida Kraze v. Laredo Heat match on Saturday. If we win that, we win the Southern Conference, and go on to play the next weekend in the PDL Semifinals. This match, would be played at the home pitch of one of the two teams playing. So if we win the Southern Conference, we have a chance to play in RR. And naturally, if we win that semifinal, then we can watch the PDL Finals (played at Hampton Roads) on FSC.

That makes it clear, thanks.
