Sorry to be posting so late about this, but I went to the match!

Prior to kick-off, the World Cup trophy arrived. A helicopter hovered over the Stade de France as a guy carrying the trophy winched down and handed it over to Aimé Jacquet to great applause.

The players were introduced onto the field individually American style. Predictably enough, Zidane got the biggest cheer when he came on. Of the team that started for France in the World Cup Final 10 years ago, only Petit was missing. Laurent Blanc took his place in midfield.

You've probably seen the goals on YouTube. The game itself was what you would expect from a charity match. Emilio Butragueno put the World XI 1-0 up in the first half, Zidane equalised midway through the second half. Pauleta - huge cheers for the former PSG man when he came on as a sub - hit a screamer of a volley from the edge of the penalty area on 80 minutes, and Ludovic Giuly scrambled in for 2-2 with two minutes to go. Everyone thought that would be that, then Davor Suker went off on his own, dribbling around the France back four to score a last minute goal (10 years too late!) before Bernard Diomede struck the final goal in injury time. Nothing too taxing, but an ebtertaining exhibition nonetheless.

There were frequent substitutions throughout the match to give everyone who turned up a run out, the French players in particular garnered big rounds of applause went the went off, even Stéphane Guivarc'h! Perhaps he has at last been forgiven for missing those chances in the final against Brazil after all this time. Of those who came on, David Trezeguet and Robert Pires in particular got the biggest cheers. Was this the French public commenting of Raymond Domenich's selection policy?

Lizarazu still looked impressive, and Bernard Lama made a couple of fine stops when he was on for Barthez. For the World XI, Rigobert Song and Edgar Davids seemed to be everywhere. But there's little doubt who the public had come to see. Any lulls in the play were punctuated by chants of "Zizou! Zizou!" and he didn't disappoint. Zinédine Zidane orchestrated then French team, rolled back the years and played like he had never been away. He still has the range of tricks and flicks and frequently ghosted past opponents as if they weren't there.

The evening ended with the French team parading the World Cup trophy around the Stade de France. Followed by a fireworks display to mark the stadium's 10th anniversary. All in all, a fun night out and well worth the journey.
