I thought posters might find of interest the "shot chart" that Notre Dame does.

For an example, Notre Dame's recent 3-0 loss to St. John's, see

http://und.ocsn.com/sports/m-soccer/stats/090603aaa.html#GAME.CHT

about halfway down the page.

I like the way they separate the areas of the field. Doing this kind of tracking seems quite simple and easy.

St. John's took 9 shots, 5 from inside the area. All three St. John's goals were scored from inside the area.

In contrast, Notre Dame took 12 shots, but only one inside the area.

I have heard it said that about half of all goals are scored from inside the area. Does anyone know whether this is in fact true?

Here's another subject for a good longitudinal statistical analysis.

Espn's soccernet.com is kind enough to do something very similar for, I believe, at least every premiere league game.

http://soccernet.espn.go.com/livescore/results?league=ENG.1&theDate=20030831&cc=5901

Click on gamecast under either game and you there is a shot chart on the left side.

Wow, that gamecast definitely has some useful information. The game log has info on every shot and set piece.
