I was just reading on on Ives Galarcep's soccer blogs about Club America wanting to make a team in the MLS. During the blog he asks the question:
"Will a Club America de St. Louis work?"
Here is a link to the blog story:

My personal reaction to this is no and I hate any thought of our team having a Mexican flavor to it. Nothing personal, but I just don't want any part of Mexico, USMNT's rival, being in St. Louis' soccer plans.
What do you all think?

While we'll probably never all agree on a name that we do like, can we at least all agree that we don't like Club America?

I wouldn't mind them being investors. I would mind them being named Club Amercia STL.

Right now we are lined up to have one of the best owners in the league.
Why would we screw with that for some cheap marketing stunt?

(the ultimate cuss word goes here) Mexican soccer. We have nothing to do with Mexico, we are in the midwest. Bringing a team tied to France would make more sense (nor would I want that either). We need to just stick it out.
On another note, I wish Cooper would keep us up to date a little more frequent. I don't doubt he is on the phone daily trying to settle the deal and such, but I wish he would hire someone to keep the site a little more updated and to at least tell us his plans or anything. Coop if you see this, please keep us posted more often

With St Louis's soccer history, why the hell would someone want to import a brand? From Mexico, of all places?

I completely agree with you guys on this, even more since there's almost no mexican community in St. Louis.
But now, on the other side....
Club America has a lot of money.
FYI, this is the owner of Club America

That would be ideal, but has anybody from France made an offer?

First, Mexico is the US' biggest rival and will be for a long time, so mingling the club cultures makes no sense to me on that front. Further, the idea that importing a ready-brand from another market may make some financial sense for the parent club but it puts the new supporters on the spot, asking them to accept and adopt that club's identity when true fan loyalism is all about the bonds that are formed over time, on-the-ground, not prepackaged.
I think it's a different matter when a team moves away and is replaced by a new one, such as the Rams replacing the Big Red . . . then you have to go with the team that shows up rather than pine for the one that left. And I know that nostalgia for 1950 doesn't see tickets in today's MLS, but I'd hate to see St Louis' soccer heritage take a backseat to some imported brand when no US city as as ready to embrace their own MLS identity as St Louis is now.

I would not be thrilled with the Club America brand, but their investment would be a boost. Maybe they could be brother clubs (maybe similar to Salt Lake and Madrid without the silly name). StL America or America StL (both which sound terrible, and contradict my last statement). Just thinking out loud.
All that said, I just don't see this happening with Coop and StL, but who knows.
How about this for crazy talk, think Cooper has made any calls to Roman Abramovich? He loves the game, already owns a couple of teams, and loves to spend money. He'd certainly be a huge investor. Seems to have a stranglehold over the teams though (the Chelsea managerial nightmare).
Okay, enough speculation for one night.

I don't see why they have to use the same,
use the same jersey and call the team "St. Louis Eagles" (America is known as the eagles)
Thinking about it, "St. Louis Eagles" sounds pretty good

It's also the premier AAU basketball team in the area, or it was. I don't know if it still is, but I think they won a national championship when they had Larry Hughes and Co. I think it sounds ok though. I wouldn't mind Eagles.

IMO, since Garber has said that he wants every team to have its own identity, I don't think it'll be eagles. While there technically isn't a team called the "Eagles" right now, the idea is already associated with DCU, both with the eagle in the crest, and with the Screaming Eagles.

thats just ridiculous. i'm all for STL getting a team b/c i think they deserve one but they should have "their own identity" like that quote from Garber. i'm vaguely in favor of club america de las vegas or phx, or even san diego, but in STL  come on...
