not so much great players but a great manager.
before Martin O'Neill was signed up we had agreed in principal to have Guus Hiddink become our next manager.
Tommy Burns had flown over to Spain and went through all the details with him. he was managing Real Betis at the time.
then it turned out that Martin O'Neill did want the job and the deal was called off with Guus. pity really, although we couldn't complain at how it turned out for us under the stewardship of O'Neill.

Juan Roman Riquelme.
when he was at Barca and struggling to get a game we tried to sign him on loan for a season. Barca were interested in doing it as Riquelme would gain CL experience but he didn't want to play in the SPL.
imagine that.
anyway, he went on loan to Villareal and the rest, as they say, is history.

Zubizaretta, the Spanish keeper. It was when Steve Archibald was manager. He wanted EF to play for flights over from Spain every week so we pulled out....apparently.

Celtic had a chance to sign American Kasey Keller right after the 1998 World Cup.
He went to Spain instead. Pity.

Not that their my team but I remember Rangers were close to signing Mario Jardel back when he was scoring for fun and hadn't turned into a fat tosser.
I remember Celtic promising to buy numerous good players but then never doing it!
Dunfermilne were trying to sign Maradona's son I remember that as well
