Euro 2008 - Angry Trezeguet quits France
Striker David Trezeguet has retired from international football following the retention of Raymond Domenech as France manager.
The Juventus player was left out of France's Euro 2008 squad and had an uneasy relationship with coach Domenech, who was told last week he could stay in the job.
France were dumped out of the finals at the group stage last month after drawing one and losing two of their games at the tournament in Austria and Switzerland.
"The awful Euros and the confirmation of the coach have led me to this irreversible decision," the 30-year-old said at Juve's pre-season training retreat.
"I see football differently from how they see it in France. The Euros were very negative but what annoys me more is that Domenech is staying," he said.
"At the moment, more political decisions are being taken than football ones and they don't respect public opinion, which favours me."
Trezeguet was second top scorer in Serie A last season with 20 goals but could not force his way into Domenech's plans.
The France coach had called on him only five times since the 2006 World Cup final, which France lost to Italy on penalties with Trezeguet missing the crucial spot kick.
The forward, who helped France lift the World Cup on home soil in 1998 and scored the golden goal in the final to win Euro 2000, has netted 34 goals in 71 internationals.
His final cap came in the 1-0 friendly victory against England in March.

well, i can't say i'm not surprised.
he might as well retire since it's not like he'll get called up again since domenech's still the manager.
i think it's best for him and france to move on.

How will be he remembered? Glorious golden goal to win the Euro 2000 Final, or for his one kick of the ball in the entire 2006 World Cup to go off the crossbar...doesn't get much more extreme than that...

Luckily for Trez, his PK miss in the WC Final wasn't the biggest ******** up of the night. I'll remember him for his golden goal in Euro.

Can't say that I'm surprised, or that concerned for that matter. The best of luck to you Trez. Ill never forget the Golden goal, but Im not likely to forget the peno either.
I'm sure Trez has a few friends still on the NT that aren't going to like the way Domenech handled things even more now. Domenech should have been given the ax. I sense France is possibly going to struggle in the quals.

I'm never one to dwell on one of my player's failures for too long, unless you're name is Phillipe Sendhimoff. Trezegol's But en Or in 2000 literally lifted me. I'd been sick for about 5 days, nastily ill, and I couldn't budge without feeling like shit, but between Wiltord and that goal, I was suddenly cured, at least until the trophy celebrations on the field with Didier, Marcel, et co. ended.

Calcio Debate: Winner Trez Forced Out By Loser Domenech
Even though I support Italy who are bitter-rivals with France, I have utmost respect for the French squad. The talent is just bursting especially in its youth. However, I must add that a good deal of France's poor showing at the EUROs was due to Domenech. Leaving out players like Trez prooved to be costly and stubborn decisions. Trying not to be offensive, but I find it hard to believe he will continue as the manager of Les Bleus.
Anyway, I much admire Trez and hope he will continue his successful career even though it will not be on the international level.

Best of luck to Trezeguet. He didn't deserve this at all.

Is that a real quote in your sig?
Yes. It was said on the Chelsea boards when we were discussing some English managers. I admitted that I was going to be deemed crazy when I said something regarding the manager of Middlesbrough. Soon as I said it, out came that quote and it came to be on my sig.

Is there a chance for Trez to comeback if Domenech goes away?

Of course.
Trezeguet got a standing ovation during France 98 - World 11, tonight. It was a love message destined to Domenech.

glad to hear.
and the impression i got was that he's retiring because of domenech...not because of age or to focus on club, etc.
so yes. i'd like to hope that trez would return.

Trezeguet has already said that he would reverse his decision if there was a change in the "coaching situation".

Well, seeing how the FFF cares about his choice of coach, don't expect him back anytime soon even of there's a coaching change in December. There are a few very goos young forwards for les bleus - Benzema and Gomis to name a few, this is the time you start developing those players for the National Team. I personally wished that he had kept his mouth shut, sat tight and hoped for the call up then prove Domenech wrong for not calling him in the first place. His retiring from the National Team and the way he did came off sounding like a whiney bitch and for the record I like Trez, but what do you gain by quitting your national team because you're bitter about not being called up? Calling out the coach? Nothing. Yeah, it may make you popular with the fans but they're not the selectors. I just keep thinking of Cantona when he retired from the National Team before the World Cup - dunno if Jacquet would have actually chose him. They sure as hell didn't need him but his retiring from the program in advance of the selection didn't help his cause.

I've been on vacation for a while, and it actually gave me a lot of spare minutes to think more about this. And look, I would think that all of you who know me well here know that I've been a big fan of Trez, as well as, very anti-Domenech. I definitely think he should have been in the Euro squad, as I would have given him a bigger part in qualifying. Though when the headlines of his international retirement struck while I was on vacation, I actually did not feel that sad about it or angry at Domenech (well, I'm always a little angry at Domenech). The reality is, even though he's a poacher, Trez will be 32 by the World Cup in South Africa, and while the Inzaghis of the world remain effective at 32, Inzaghi barely did anything for the Italians in terms of international level then, which I think, could be the same with Trez in this comparable situation.
It's true poachers can always grab a goal, as they say, though I think much of that is due to their familiarity with the team. That is, they would know, for example, when one of their teammates would shoot and would know where to expect a rebound. At Juve, Trez has been aligned with Del Piero for almost a decade, and he knows when to expect the killer cross to turn in, while with Les Bleus, that isn't there. Which to me, would help explain why Trez has struggled.
Though the other side in my mind insisted that Trez remained with much to offer the team, especially after the season he had at Juve.
So I got all of this rambling down to 2 questions:
Does Trezeguet deserve to be a part of the national team? Yes.
Would it be in the best interest of the national team to keep him?
That question was more difficult to answer, and I think, especially given some of the attacking players we have rising in the ranks, that this could be the best solution, overall, for everybody.
