Very interesting. I was going to make one of these myself, after your one for Europe.

Will be a real challenge to try and not include anyone twice like I did in the last thread. I will need to consult my books on the South American line ups.

I found it relatively easy for the forward lines, but the half backs are kinda difficult. But of course I allow players to be featured more than once, which makes it easier for me.

1955-59 I didn't want to include D Santos as the right back based on his absence in that position during the '58 World Cup (except for the final), but after checking the 1957 Copa America lineups I found he did play regularly for Brazil so maybe in '58 it was only a momentary slip of form or an injury. Anyway, didn't find a better player for the right back position among the other South American lineups.

I would suggest Quarentinha instead of Maschio.

I would suggest Quarentinha instead of Maschio.

I wanted to have one of the forwards that won the 1957 Copa America for Argentina in my team so I settled for Maschio. Other options would have been Vava or Altafini. I admit I did not consider Quarentinha, but with these other options I would have had an all-Brazil 5-man forward line, too much!

I'm not sure if someone who never managed to become top scorer is the best choice for the number 9 position.
And guiding yourself after the NT composition isn't the best choice for South-America, because there have been instances when the best players were left out.

In regard to Vava, he may have scored 9 goals at WC level, but he never managed to lead a competition at club level, where his record isn't anything impressive. Vava played in the cariocas before his 3 years spell in Atletico : he has ZERO top-scorer awards, while Quarentinha has 3 in the same competition between 1958-1960. In fact, his performances during those 3 seasons for Botafogo were the most dominant from a striker in Brazil at that time, with goal ratios going past 1 goal per game.

I would suggest Quarentinha instead of Maschio.Maschio had more of an impact at NT level. At least he played in a Copa America back in '57. I'd still prefer Vava over Quarentinha because at least he has a fantastic WC record.

1965-69

----------------------- Mazurkiewicz

Carlos Alberto --- Chumpitaz --- E Figueroa --- Marzolini

----------------- P Rocha ------ Gerson

Jairzinho ------------------------------------ Rivelino
----------------- Artime --------- Pele

1975-79

-------------------- Fillol

Nelinho --- Passarella --- E Figueroa --- Junior

------------------- Ardiles
------------ Sotil -------- Bochini
------------------- Cubillas

----------- Bertoni ------- Kempes

My knowledge on LBs from this era is really bad. Even though Junior didn't get capped until 1979, I didn't want Tarantini in this team.

1980-84

----------------- Fillol

---------------- Passarella
Leandro ---------- Oscar -------- Junior

--- Socrates ---- Ardiles ---- Falcao
------------------ Zico

--- Roberto Dinamite --- Maradona

I'll be honest and admit that my knowledge on quality CFs from this time isn't that good at all.

1985-89

------------------- Higuita

Jorginho --- Julio Cesar --- Ruggeri --- Branco

---------- Burruchaga --- Francescoli
Cerezo ---------------------------- Valdano

----------- Careca ------- Maradona

Higuita isn't the most popular pick but I admired his extremely unorthodox style. Despite some of his horrendous mistakes, the Roger Milla incident at Italia 90 being the most unforgettable, he wasn't as bad as some people made him out to be.

1990-94

---------------------- Taffarel

Sensini --- Ricardo Gomes --- Aldair --- Leonardo

-------------- Redondo ------- Dunga
-------------------- Valderrama

--------- Romario --- Batistuta --- Asprilla

Bebeto would be a better choice than Tino but I don't want to put in too many Brazilians. Tino was quite a character and Colombia had a decent team at the time. Can't help but keep him in.

Maschio had more of an impact at NT level. At least he played in a Copa America.

Maschio scored 44 goals in 139 games for Racing in Argentina. Enough said. If someone with such an atrocious record can make it into a "best of" type of team at the number 9 position, then no comment.

Yeah, he did had a great Copa America in 1957, but that's all he did at international level.

I'm not in need of having a typical marksman for the #9 shirt, as I think Pelé will score enough goals. He might do quite fine with a #9 not looking to score goals himself but being content with a complementary role. The number of goals scored is not the only criteria that should be used for a forward. I remember having read a favorable review of Maschio a couple of years back, he was certainly an accomplished forward, even with his domestic goal record not being impressive.

Why not Sivori?

I already had him in one of my European teams. Have a personal rule not to feature a player in two different continental selections.
