Interesting subject, but I would like to see how do you rank a World Cup win to a Euro win???

i prefer the euros, cause you avoid teams like bahrian, or trindad and tobago, a total waste of time!

you avoid Brazil, Argentina plus some some other competitive south American squad and a whole bunch of dangerous African teams also :D

Euros are the 2nd most prestigious tournament right behind the World Cup. The Copa America is probably 3rd and then there's everyone else.

Of course this topic comes from an Italian. :D
We're missing two great teams in EURO, that's 2/16=0.125
1 WC = 1.125 EC
1 EC = 10 Copa America

Brazil and Argentina if he's comparing the Euro to the WC.

Underestimate South America at your own peril. And I'm talking about the South American countries not named Brazil or Argentina.

You certainly wouldn't fancy facing a fair few of them on their own patch.

It's not necessary the teams, but also the fact, that you don't need to qualify for the tournament and that it was held every two years. I think factor 5-10 is fair, if you want to compare the tournaments, which is stupid anyway.

LOL Highly flawed logic considering those 2 great teams win almost 50% of World Cups.

What brings it down for me is when you have star players asking to not be selected for the tournament i.e Kaka. Could you imagine the uproar if Torres had asked not be selected for Euro 08? Hopefully with it not being on a 4 year cycle there will be less of that.

Um those two great teams have won exactly the same number of WCs as Italy and Germany. Lets face it the Euros are a much more difficult competition to win.

south american teams - 9 world cups
european teams - 9 world cups
Although they haven't won a WC: Mexico and USA always present a good challenge to the top tier teams.
The African Teams are starting to get better.
The Asian teams aren't too bad either.
So, you're missing about 2/3 of good competition with the EURO. So, the EURO is probably equivalent to 2 1/2 to 3 WCs IMO, plus it isn't as difficult because the number of teams is lower. When it expands, I think it will be equivalent to 2 WCs in terms of difficulty of accomplishment.

So you're counting Italy's world cups from the 1930's??
Anyway, the "math" is flawed because there are only about 5 great teams in the world, so taking out Brasil and Argentina is taking out about 40% of great teams (not "2/16" as that poster I responded to wrote).
Also, as others have pointed out Ghana, Cote d'Ivoire, Mexico and one or two more CONMEBOL teams are on the same level as some of the 16 Euro finals teams.
Lets face it the Euros are a much more difficult competition to win.
The Euros are more difficult in the group-stage.
For the knockout rounds, it largely depends on the luck of the draw, but in most cases the World Cup provides more difficult challenges. France clearly had a more difficult route to the final in 2006 than either Germany or Spain did in Euro 2008. And, it was a greater feat for Germany to finish 3rd in WC 2006 than for them to finish second in Euro 2008.

this isn't even comparable, does anybody here actually think Greece could win a WC ?

Obviously a team of that calibre can win a World Cup.

What stupid comments. It's always more difficult to win a world event, rather than a compressed event from a specific region. Anyone who thinks the Euro's are harder to win are oblivious to the difficulty of dealing international competition, outside of Europe.

This is like the Champions League/Uefa Cup thing: who cares? If my team wins I would celebrate with the same joy anyway
So morally they are equal
