I thought I'd create a thread devoted to the douchebag of the day.
instead of threads being posted devoted only to 1 article this thread should be the place for the douchebag of the day award to be awarded for stupid interviews from our players/ comments from past players/ journalists.
my first nomination for July 8th DOTD goes to Alex Hleb.
for this stupid interview

my favourite bit
The midfielder knows he will not get a warm welcome from his team-mates at pre- season training this week, especially after his pop at Fabregas.
He said: “When we get scoring opportunities, Fabregas is much more selfish than me.
“Given a chance to shoot, he always goes for it — unlike me.”
(10 goals in 3 years idiot)

I just finished reading that and was thinking the same thing, what a tool.

You know, Hleb is right. At Barcelona he will play in his preferred position, which is central and as the main playmaker. That's exactly what Barca need. Perfect fit.

at first when i read the thread title, i thought it was going to be a new thread dedicated to a different "douchebag of the day" poster on the arsenal forum.

Hleb's lack of desire to shoot might be more acceptable if he created another 10-12 goals for teammates than he does...to use basketball phraseology he's neither a shooting guard or point guard, and that's not a really useful quality.

What a cvnt, criticizing cesc for shooting!?! Only Hleb, I can't wait to see his back. Leave #13 at the door, I'm sure we can find someone worthy of putting it on. (that's my number too!, no pressure Wenger! :D)

Hleb and Cesc are good friends tho... what was the context of this?

I'm going to guess its all in good humor then. Its just not funny to uis as we could have used another 10 goals either scored or set up by Alex

Ha !! Too bad helb's lost it completely now .. wat better way to get our other than criticising both Cesc & Wenger !
Anyway, OT [just saw the douchebag thing in the title]
ARSENAL have been asked by Islington Council (http://www.sportnetwork.net/main/s378/st130745.htm) to rethink its plans for the Queensland Road redevelopment.

I have to admit I thought the same - and was slightly concerned!

I've goota say that if that Hleb quote didn't have the word 'selfish' in it, I wouldn't have thought it was critical. I don't actually think he was being critical either way though - I think it's been misinterpreted in the wrong context.

That's kind of how I took it. It just seems more of a way to highlight the differences in their style of play. The word "selfish" is used a lot in sports to describe those who take the bulk of the scoring chances, I think it has less of a negative connotation than it does in other aspects of life.

Yeah I think he was just comparing himself and Cesc... I take no fault with that quote. The Wenger one though? Well thats enough to be shown the door.

Most painfully funny quote EVER.

I agree. If you watch him in some of the atvo videos he seems to be a pretty funny guy. In the what would you do if you weren't a footballer...video he said he would be in the mafia.

In his defense, Arsenal midfielder Aliaksandr Hleb's mis-quoted interview (http://www.goal.com/en/Articolo.aspx?ContenutoId=768088) set the record straight surrounding the circumstances of his inevitable departure this summer...
"I am very grateful to Arsène Wenger. He is the best coach in my career. And not just a coach. He is a very good man and intuitive psychologist. I very much appreciate his support.
"I talked to him twice before the end of the season. It is also not that easy for me to leave this club, because it has become my home. I think he is upset, though it is better to ask him, maybe he is glad.
"Cesc [Fabregas] and I understand each other very well on the field. And it is very, very pleasurable for me to play with him. He's a very pleasant guy both in life and as a footballer. He is just more egoistic in goal-scoring opportunities, if he had a chance to score, he always used it, unlike me."
