i used to play in fedencive mid field the best way to play it is to be very good defencively and dont rely on the fdefence to pick up the pieces so you have to be fit and be able to break down the opponents attack, you have to be very strong upperbody as alot of strikers run with the ball, you have to be able to anticipate a pass

Great 1 v 1 tackler. He is the double team guy in the zone. he is an important link man when one of your backs wins the ball.

He should be interchange able with the offensive mid at times. He is big strong and physical. Also to have a big shot from far out would be helpful.

The most important two traits are positioning and anticipation.

Someone like Makelele is not quick, good in the air, particularly good on the ball or an especially good tackler, but because of where he positions himself he can mop up loose balls very easily.

It depends, do you mean an enforcer type DM such as a Makelele or a Mascherano or do you mean a playmaker who sits infront of the defense?

If it's the former, than positioning, tackling and the ability to make short simple passes in congested areas.

If it's the latter, you must also have good positioning, a great first touch and the ability to make long, crossfield passes

More of an attacking defender, he was known for his offensive skills and scoring as well.

I thought he was a defender when the opponent had the ball. But, when the ball was lost he would help direct their attack and get into the attack himself.

He and Carlos Alberto had a knack for getting the final pass in some attacks and shooting and finishing the play.

Senna is only 5 foot 9 inches - hardly the biggest guy. He is a very good tackler though and great at positioning. A fine example of what a defensive midfielder should do.

If you want to see what a defensive mid should do when you gain possession, a great example is Michael Carrick ( though he is a more advanced mid) - he always comes deep into the gaps between defenders to recieve the ball and move it upfield.

Well, when I play D-mid which is my position I just try and make the other teams midfield a living hell. Whenever a pass is made I try and get to the receiver before he gets the ball and completely dominate him. Also, what my defence tells me that they like is that when someone is on the sideline taking a outside back 1 v. 1 is to run down and help out. I think the biggest thing you need is fearlessness and heart (and some positioning of course) to play D-mid, anything extra is just a bonus.

He and Carlos Alberto had a knack for getting the final pass in some attacks and shooting and finishing the play.Yes, he also helped direct the defense and keep it in order. Carlos Alberto however wasn't as good a defender as he was an attacker.
