OK, fellow football guys and whatnot, jwaldman11 suggested a petition at www.petitiononline.com but had no time to do anything on it currently. Since I have hours of free time (or, in this case, 20 minutes or so) and I am also prematurely becoming a "crotchety old man", I whipped up the following.

Please comment with any additions or changes you feel are needed, and we will post it at petitiononline.com and pass it around BigSoccer.com and any place else we can think of.

So, without further adieu, here it is:

"To: Lennart Johansson, President, U.E.F.A. (The Union of European Football Associations), the members of the Executive Committee of U.E.F.A., and the members of the Marketing, TV, and New Technology Panel of U.E.F.A.

We, the soccer fans of North America, ask that in future negotiations concerning the television rights to U.E.F.A. Club Competitions (i.e, the U.E.F.A. Champions League and the U.E.F.A. Cup) that a minimum requirement be set for both number of games and overall percentage of games to be broadcast in North American markets, so that fans in these markets will be provided with more comprehensive coverage than is being provided by the current rights-holder, the Walt Disney Corporation, parent company of ABC, Inc., parent company of ESPN, Inc., the broadcasting outlet for U.E.F.A. Champions League competition in North America.

ESPN, Inc. has continually reduced the number of matches broadcast in North America during their association with U.E.F.A., retarding interest of not only U.E.F.A sanctioned competitions, but also in the sport itself.

The soccer fans of North America only ask that President Johansson, the members of the Executive Committee, and the members of the Marketing, TV, and New Media Panel ensure that any agreement concerning television rights in North America follows the principles of U.E.F.A.’s own mission statement, specifically to “increase access and participation, without discrimination on grounds of gender, religion or race, and support growth in the grassroots of the game”, and “ensure that the needs of those playing the game and the interests of fans are properly reflected in UEFA’s thinking.” "

Yes, No, Maybe? Needs work? Help me out, guys....

Please note that in the actual text, the following words are in bold:

Paragraph 1: "minimum requirement be set for both number of games and overall percentage of games to be broadcast in North American markets"

Paragraph 3: "increase access", "support growth in the grassroots of the game", and "interests of fans"

Looks good to me. I'd go with it. It sounds professional and is something that UEFA will take somewhat seriously due to an increase in North American interest in soccer/football and especially European football. I think if enough signatures are on it, it might show UEFA that, yes, Virginia, there are passionate fans on the other side of the Atlantic!

I think that one thing that needs to be stressed is that there be an increase in English Language coverage here in the United States. ESPN is launching their all-Spanish language channel, ESPNDeportes in early 2004, and are planning on moving all future Champions League coverage to that station.

I like the petition. Count Me in...on the ESPN Deportes thing, since Sky TV is Broadcasting Champions League Matches in England why not let Fox Sports World take the English Language broadcast rights...

It would seem to me that UEFA, since they are a somewhat intelligent organization, would at least require ESPN to provide a SAP in English if the games are moving to Deportes. Don't tell me that every club in Europe wouldn't LOVE to have some American dollars in their pocket, and since the US is really the last frontier for soccer, they would be stupid NOT to have an English broadcast in the US.

You people don't get it, if UEFA tells ESPN how many games they have to show to get a contract they will just dump it and we won't get any games. Be happy with what we have and if you really want to do something get more people to watch, boosting ratings and making money!

No, actually an outlet like FSW (owned by NewsCorp who owns Sky Sports and your beloved Mancs) will get in and acquire the rights to North America and there will be MORE CL games on TV.

You'll get to see even MORE manUre games. Now won't that be swell?

Sky actually owns only partial rights for the Champions League in the UK - on Tuesday's ITV (via both ITV and ITV2) have first pick of the match's - Sky has a partial package on Tuesday and pick of the Wednesday matches which are largely broadcast through Sky Digital -

On the US broadcast point - look at from UEFA's point of view who is a better bedfellow for the American market - Murdoch or Eisner?

Can you throw an MLS clause in there too? I'll sign it then.

I'll sign it, Coach. Just go ahead and do it. By the way, it figures that a ManUre fan would try to rain on our little parade here, doesn't it?

Siere A is now available on GolTV, who broadcasts an English SAP on all their match coverage, so if you're looking for Italian football coverage, try them.

so this kind of died, or at least i don't see anything else about it on the board. did this petition ever come into existence or did it die on its way from brain to keyboard?

Nope, not dead, and it's available to you at:

http://www.petitiononline.com/uefa/petition.html

Almost 200 signatures in 72 hours. Not nearly the response we'll need to get any kind of reaction, but it's a start
