The fastest player today has to be Thierry Henry. He can accelerate faster than anyone else, and he has incredible pace with the ball at his feet.

Ronaldinho Gaucho

Ronaldo for all his weight and all is very very fast.

Ronaldinho is a blur, but that depends on whether he partied the night before or not.

Roberto Carlos is also very freakin fast.

Pablo Aimar too. But every time I see him run I laugh, He looks like a popsicle with that mop of hair he has. But he's fast and deadly in the box.

Totti is pretty quick, when he's not rolling on the pitch bitching and whinning.

I'm gonna go out on a limb here...

Claudio Caniggia was pretty damn fast in his prime. I think he was the fastest player in the world for a while. As an old man he's still pretty quick.

One more thing...

The entire freakin Nigerian national team is like watching green mercury.

The fastest? With or without the ball at their feet?

Over 20 yards Darius Vassel is probably the fastest in Britain, but with the ball at his feet Henry is absolutely rapid.

Darren Campbell the World 100m bronze medalist did play pro (or semi pro) football in the LoW so I suppose he is probably the quickest.

i dunno about actual times or anything, but you gotta look at sol campbell. for a big guy, he's one of the fastest players i've seen.

on the same note, i'd have to agree about roberto carlos being the fastest

Ato Bolden was a soccer player too. At present, Campbell is faster than Bolden, but Bolden must be faster in his peak.

I think Ato is quite a handy allround sportsman, because he wants to be a pro-cricketer when he retires from athletics. You are right about Ato at his peak being faster as his PB is something like 9.84, while Darren Campbell's is only 10.07.

Obafemi Martins for both acceleration and speed

tough question, I read once on this forums about a danish (I think it was Ebbe Sand) but I'd say Roberto Carlos is incredibly quick, lightning fast.

I'm not going to say he is the fastest and I know I am going to get a lot of *@#*@#*@#*@# for saying this but DaMarcus Beasley is pretty fast.

Interesting that everyone says Germany plays the most physical football, but noone names a german player as fast.

I`m confused.

There's a difference between playing physical and being fast. The former does not necessarily exclude the other but they're not always the same thing....think Venn diagrams.
Anyway, if you have a German in mind why don't you share with the rest of the class.
But I'll show my bias and say....Henry, of course.

I alwas thought Rummenigge was very fast. But don`t know exactly.

Today I would also say Henry. He is the best counter-attack-striker. Maybe Ronaldo is as fast as him.

Klinsmann (alias Jay Goppingen)
