Do football players from Australia and some former colonies get special rules if they are "still" part of the UK? I know they aren't actually, but you still have the honoring the Queen and stuff like that. And if so, should Americans get special rules as well? A lot people in the US if you go back three or four generations were UK citizens...shouldn't it be easier for those people to get work permits than say....a Mongolian?

Erm..
No, but most Australians have 2nd Nationalities. Either because their parents are immigrants from Greece, Croatia, England something like that.. having a European 2nd Nationality is a big boost to WP situations.
Failing that, some have it through marriage.
2 Examples. Mark Viduka, Australian/Croatian. Tony Popovic, Australian/Italian (Italian Wife).

Players have an easier time if they have an access to an EU passport. Otherwise, they have to go through the UK rules to gain a work permit.
Most rules on citizenship will only go back to the parent.

Not exactly true for the UK - Commonwealth citizenship still confers some right to work in the UK (it generally has to be qualified - i.e., Commonwealth citizenship doesn't guarantee a right to work but can make it much easier)
I believe Australians under a certain age (I think 26) qualify for 4 year work permits in the UK if they have at least one UK-born grandparent - that may not be exactly right but Australians enjoy a right to work according to something of that flavour
