Basically the article says that Blatter has a plan b if South Africa can't organize the WC in time. Basically I think that he's looking for a way out of SA. Anyhow he mentions, as possible sites for the 2010WC as Spain & Portugal, England, Mexico and the good ole USA. He picks these countries because they could organize a WC in two days, two weeks or two months. His words not mine.

Speculating, the European countries would probably be a no show because of Germany 2006. Other countries would complain of the two continuous WC on European soil. This opens the door for Mexico and the US. I easily would end up broke after that summer!!!

Thoughts?

It would be the US. A third WC in Mexico would be unlikely at that point.

I'd like to see SA get it together, though.

And let's all hope that Judy Foudy is in med school by then, wherever they play the darn thing.

No kidding because this time around, being older wiser and with way more money, I'm going to see WAY MORE GAMES.

I've promised myself to watch every USA AND ARGENTINA match if they play in the USA. ALOT of travelling but I'm doing it. I'm starting to save as of now. lol lol Wishful thinking but you can never plan too far ahead. Right boys?

Extremely selfish of me but I want them to strip the WC from South Africa.

1. Waking up at 6am to watch games and then heading to work -- NO FUN!

2. Would also like to travel and see all of Argentina's and USA's games... And Since Argentina is winning the Cup -- thats a lot of games! :p

Let's start a little speculation and see what cities would be potential sites for WC games.

1. NYC
2. Los Angeles
3. San Francisco
4. Seattle
5. Chicago?
6. Houston
7. Dallas
8. Boston
9. Philadelphia
10. St Louis?

Any other potential sites? Maybe some that we should drop?

is not the new university of Phoenix stadium not designed to have soccer to be played there. It is indoor and has air con so it would not be as bad as the sliver dome was in 94.

Denver's Invesco Field was designed so that some of the seats could be removed to widen the field to WC standards. Plus, it's got excellent natural grass.

I posted this before and thought it would work here...

In 1994 the sites were:
Rose Bowl - Pasadena, CA.
Pontiac Silverdome - Detroit, MI
Stanford Stadium - Stanford, CA
Giants Stadium - Meadowlands, NJ
Citrus Bowl - Orlando, FL
Soldier Field - Chicago, IL
Cotton Bowl - Dallas, TX
Foxboro Stadium - Foxborough, Mass
RFK Stadium - Washington, DC

If the 2010 Tournament is held in the U.S. These are the sites I have come up with
FEDEX Field - Washington, DC (91,704 Cap.)
Dolphin Stadium - Miami, FL (76,100 Cap.)
New Dallas Cowboys Stadium - Arlington, TX (80,000-100,000 Cap.)
Gillette Stadium - Foxborough, Mass (68,756 Cap.)
Ford Field - Detroit, MI (65,000 Cap.)
Soldier Field - Chicago, IL (61,500 Cap.)
Rose Bowl - Pasadena, CA (91,000 Cap.)
Giants Stadium or New Meadowlands Stadium - Meadowlands, NJ (80,000+ Cap.)
University of Phoenix Stadium - Glendale, AZ (63,400 Cap.)

Possible alternate sites...
Reliant Stadium - Houston, TX (71,500 Cap.)
Lincoln Financial Field - Philadelphia, PA (68,532 Cap.)
Raymond James Stadium - Tampa, FL (65,857 Cap.)
Qwest Field - Seattle, Wash (67,000 Cap.)

9 sites should still be enough, Possibly a 10th...

I think in 1994 the USSF made a mistake in not making Miami one of the sites and electing Orlando's stadium instead -- With the city of Miami becing so culturally diverse and already an International city, Dolphin Stadium would probably be a site!

The USSF would almost DEFINITELY put the final in L.A. (Pasadena), like in 1994

If this thing happens (and I'm not expecting that it will) then it's going to come down to a lot of factors other than the actual stadium:

Negotiations with the NFL team that controls the stadium.
Involvement of the local public officials.
Security arrangements.
Who's involved. If MLS is the sponsor, they'll favor MLS cities.

That's just to name a few considerations. Still, how many countries have as many new 70k+ stadiums as the US?

That's what Blatter basically said. "The US could organize the the WC in two days."

First of all, the US wanted to use Joe Robbie in 94 but couldn't because the Marlins were playing.

The US used a 2/3 groups/stadium formula in 94. They would do so again. That would mean that 12 stadiums would be used. You'll see four clusters, one each in the Northeast, South, Midwest and West. You may also see the addition of two "lay-off" venues that agree to host less than four games.

Certain stadiums will require upgrades, the most important of which will be the widening of playing surfaces. The owners of those stadiums, ironically, will demand a slate of at least four games for having paid for improvements.

Also, to the extent that it is possible, MLS cities or states will host games.

So, a 2010 WC in the US will look something like this:

Foxboro
East Rutherford
Washington (FedEx)

Chicago
Kansas City
Denver

Dallas
Houston
Miami

Seattle
San Francisco (Santa Clara)
Los Angeles

Cleveland and Phoenix could serve as lay-off venues.

Salt Lake will host its share of pre-tournament friendlies.

Details could change but I think you'll see the formula that I've outlined. You could mess with it to get Philly involved, for instance, consider DC a southern venue and drop Miami. But do really want to do that? Anyway, there are many possibilities.

I also think that you'll see the final in East Rutherford this time around.

One last thing: The US does not co-host World Cups. It's bad enough that we have to share our league.

We don't need Canada's help on this.

I agree 100%... I was killed on another thread by merely suggesting that the Premier Soccer League in the United States should ONLY have American cities.

Oh Well...
