View Full Version : Big Transfer Duds, Great Comebacks

Transfer time is hotting up. Lots of talk on big money moves for players at the moment.
Made me think about all of the big money moves in the past that IMO were dud buys (Gazza to Lazio, Collymore to Liverpool, etc).
Interest to know of these dud buys that were then sold off to another club on the cheap only to recapture the form that created the earlier big money transfer in the first place.
When you think about comebacks in this context who comes to mind for you?

Diego Forlan.
United bought him for £7 million, and he scored 17 goals in 96 league games. Then, we sold him to Villareal for £4 million, and he wins the Pichichi the next season! :(

The obvious ones are players who were cheap for reasons other than strictly performance, like Cantona. Adebayor cost Arsenal effectively nothing. Anelka got progressively cheaper in his career until resurrecting himself at Bolton and engineering another expensive move to Chelsea.

My thought was Bergkamp. Ajax to Inter. Didnt really do a hell of a lot, made the move to Arsenal and took off from there.

Ballack. Had a shaky first season, got injured, came back from injury and without him, Chelsea would definitely not have had a shout at the title.

How is he a transfer dud when was signed on a free?
How did he make a great comeback when he is still at Chelsea?
Did you even bother to read the opening post?

Adrian Mutu. Cost Chelsea 22 million euros. Did ok his first season, but then tested positive for coke. Went to Juventus where he failed to impress and then was transferred to Fiorentina where he is now a great player.

Morientes- Poor at Liverpool, revived at Valencia.
Thierry Henry- Deemed poor at Juventus (although he thinks otherwise), then became the best in the world at Arsenal.
Diego Maradonna- Never thrived at Barcelona, but did farily well at Napoli.
Pirlo- Miles better at AC Milan than he was at Inter.
Torsten Frings - Never settled at Bayern Munich, one of the best at Werder Bremen.

He helped Barca win a Copa Del Rey as well as playing through illness and an injury that would've ended most players careers. I guess only scoring 38 gols in some 50-60 matches makes one a dud.

I'm not saying he was poor, but he wasn't quite Diego. It was definitely to harsh to say he was a transfer dud, but he was not as good as he could have been; shown by the fact he went to Napoli. If Maradona can win the world cup on his own he could have won more than the Copa del Rey at Barcelona.
