View Full Version : Question about new away jerseys

Today I finally received my new away jersey (complete with Henry/14 on the back). On each sleeve is a patch that says "Champions 2002-2003 Barclaycard Premiership".

Now obviously I know that Arsenal did not win the Premiership in said season. Does anyone know if this is a mistake by Nike or do these patches denote the FA Cup title?

My guess is it's an error, like when I got a Matthew Barnaby Penguins jersey and they put a captain's 'C' on it. It also wouldn't be a mistake by Nike, as they're not the ones who put the patches on. You normally won't get the patches unless you have your jersey numbered, and then the store usually applies them. Just out of curiosity, who'd you order from?

Still, cherish that jersey, for it is the way things should have been!

Sounds like Nike was counting their chickens before they hatched and unloaded the unhatched on you.

I got it from an independent dealer off eBay (it only cost $35 altogether), but whenever I get a shirt from eBay I always make sure it is official. The Nike tags were still on it when I got it, and the patches are very well done, so I was thinking that Nike probably put them on.

Oh well, I just thought it was weird that it came with said patches, so I thought I would ask. Maybe my Arsenal buddies will get a kick out of it.

Those are after market patches, Nike does not put them on. I think you either got a fake or bought from dealer that is clueless and just put the wrong patches on it.

Matt Barnaby as a captain. Now there's a thought.

In all honesty, I think you got a fake. Only because you got a in-season jersey that just came out a month ago, with name and number, plus patches for $35. Things like that don't come for $35. I've ordered jerseys in the past from eBay which have been fakes, that's why I swore off from doing that forever. Sure it looks great in the pic, and sure it came with tags, but if they can make a fake jersey, I'm pretty sure a tag isn't hard to duplicate. Anyway, as long as you like it, who cares. If anything, it's a learning experience!

Tags are nothing to reproduce. I once bought one where the pic was of a real deal one and what showed up looked nothing like the pic. You have to be VERY carefull off ebay and I agree that kit at that price sounds fake but you never know.

There's a lot of fake and pirated kit circulating on eBay. Read the feedback before you bid.

By the way, any reputable manufacturer would destroy patches or any other item produced in advance to commemorate a championship, but which is not won. They don't want to create a secondary market for this stuff.

Yeah, that's another good point. They'll take a picture of a jersey off a legit site like subside for example, and tell you that this is what you're gonna get. Only I assume that for the price and location, you'll be getting something way different. I must say though, there are good fakes out there if you don't mind the fact that it is fake. Kinda like women and purses and/or shoes, men have jerseys.

The only way I'll ever get a jersey off of eBay is if it's an older jersey which I doubt that the dirty dealers would go through the trouble of keeping the old stuff. I've gotten the '99 yellow JVC Arsenal jersey off of their and it's completely legit. Also, if a current jersey is going at a price that sounds a bit more reasonable i.e. $50-60, I'll almost be sure it's legit. But even then I'd be a bit skeptical.

The real test as to whether it's fake or not is whether it has the mesh inserts under the arms and I think down at the bottom of the jersey (I'm going off of the home shirt, so it might be different on the away kit). That's usually the toughest part to recreate. Not to dash your excitement over getting a kit too much!

And yeah, otter, I thought Matt as a captain was a pretty funny idea myself, though he had the 'A' for awhile, after a bunch of injuries knocked out the other alternates.

not 100% perfect, many people buy there first kit this way and don't know better. Plus if your selling fakes your going to fake feedback.

They are differnt, at least on mine they are.

Nike shifted where the kits are made this year so the home kit may now have changed too.

Thats how I buy them too, you are buying from a fan so assuming they bought the real deal first time around your good. A pic of a kit on some guys sofa is much easier to see if its a fake or not it seems.

I think that's true to some extent. Nike used the cool-motion, so you had mesh panels all around the back and under the arms and sleeves. However, I once got an Arsenal Dreamcast one which didn't have too much mesh, so it was easier to copy. Same with a Real Madrid one I once got. Although I don't think Adidas uses mesh that much anyway. However for this years Nike jerseys, it seems as if they all have that curved mesh area on the front and back, along with an interlocking mesh panel on the sides. I can't really explain that one, you just gotta take a look for yourself. But from the fakes on eBay, it looks nothing like the mesh from the pics of legit jerseys I've seen.

Now that he's a Ranger, I wouldn't mind seeing him with an 'A' on his chest. I think he definitely deserves one over the Big E.

That's another good point. Plus since it's a huge operation that they run, they have a large number of feedbacks, almost always in 3 figures, a lot in 4 as well. Whether they're fake or not, I don't know, but I definitely wouldn't doubt it.

I finally saw the Arsenal away jersey by the way. Went to Paragon Sports on 18th and Broadway in Manhattan. It's a real nice jersey. It has these raised lines running vertically on the jersey. They're yellow so I guess that's why they don't show up in pictures. If you don't know what I mean, I guess take a look at the current England national team jersey. It has thoise lines except running up and down. But definitely a nice shirt. Too bad they didn't have my size or I'd have my fifth Arsenal jersey.

Pinstirpes! I forgot about those, that was the frist thing I noticed about my new kit, does the one you bought off eBay have them? No pic will show them well, this is great in person test.

Truth be told, I love the jersey. The picture that was shown on the auction is of the same jersey I got. It looks authentic (the lettering & numbering on the back look great), so I'm veyr happy with it.

I just think it's strange to have the things on the sleeves.

are the lettering and patches made of heavy duty felt?
