View Full Version : All time Dream Team
Leeds92

Leading on from the Zidane thread. What would be your all time dream team. Go with a 4-4-2 to keep it simple (can be a flat midfield or CDM AM set-up).
Any player, any era. You can name a midfielder as a forward if you like or a defender/midfielder, midfield/defender. Many players have filled various roles over the years so lets not be too strict about whether certain players were in set positions.
Name up to 5 on the bench as well. Have a feeling this will be open for lots of debate.

Howard is my token American
Lahm is just my fav. LB and he can score
Hyypia can shut down the best player on your team
Kaka is amazing
C. Ronaldo is the best outside midfielder of all time.
I didn't allow myself to get caught up in the mentality that everything was better way back in the day. Today's generation is always going to be better than yesterday's because of training improvements, tactical improvements, technical improvements, and a deeper pool of players. Maradona and Pele were great and dominating at their time but IMO, if you take their skill back then and translate it to now they would not dominate the same. So I think the All-Time Dream Team should have a lot of today's players.

You could also make the argument that if you take the older players and allow them to be trained in the same way that modern players are then they would still dominate. The way I compare players across generations is to compare their influence/impact on their respective period of time.

You could easily make the case.

That's an extremely superficial way to judge an all-time ranking. By this logic, you could even proclaim that the average student in maths is smarter than Pythagoras because he knows calculus while Phytagoras did not. But he isn't - because his superior knowledge in comparison to Pythagoras is only the consequence of the accumulation of knowledge over centuries by humankind, in other words is due to extrinsec factors which the respective student has absolutely no merit in.
Your suggested time travel is daft, first and foremost because a notion such as skill has no clearly defined parameters. We can follow the speed progress through the track-and-field records (although the improvement is much smaller than what you seem to suggest), but how do you measure the skill level which you mentioned ? Who is the most skilled player in one generation ? How do you know that the skill level of the top players in one generation has gone up ? How do you actually know that there is a progression in terms of skill and not, like most characteristics which depend on human talent, the emergences of differently skilled individuals isn't completely random instead of the constant evolution which you suggest ?
Your assumption that the skill level of players has gone up seems quite gratuituous to me.

Of all time??? He's the best player in the world today but I think we should wait a couple years to see if he can keep this up. 2 great years don't make you the best of all time in that position

I dont understand your reasoning for Howard.
Lahm might be your favourite but to put him as the best LB ever is a bit much, he's not even the best LB today.
Hyypia is a very good player and has been for a few years now, but hes not even the best centre-half in Liverpool's history. He'd probably be between 3rd and 5th best CB in Liverpool's history.
Kaka is amazing isnt a very good explanation.
And your last statement is just an oversight on history and you getting caught up in the media hype about Cristina Ronaldo

Great contribution. Now take your whining elsewhere and stop trying to destroy yet another thread with your asinine ramblings. We have already discussed this very issue elsewhere and several weeks ago.

claiming ronaldo is the best ever outside midfielder is beyond foolish and the fact that you can not back it up with any sort of logic and resort to personal attacks has become expected from you

I never claimed that Howard, Lahm, Hyypia, or Kaka are the best of all time. This is my dream team. I would love to manage this team, watch this team, etc. and i am confident that they would be successful against other teams mentioned in this thread. I'm not going to apologize for having a different opinion.
