Folks,
I finally figured out what has been literally causing me headaches after a match. It seems that heading the ball gives me a mild headache about an hour after the game. Even after just one contact.
Any preventative suggestions? (besides aspirin!)

A little past history please. Have you had concussion injuries in the past?
Take no chances see a neroulogist.
-------------------------------------------
Here is just something you might be interested in.
These are tests that a coach should give a player after any kind of head injury. The player saying he or she is okay is not good enough.
Exercise test - If they cannot do 5 pushups without feeling
woozy, then they are out for the game.
------------
Immediate past memory test - Ask them to describe what just occurred in the game before the hit. If they don't remember, they fail.
----------
Current thinking test - older players have them count backwards by 7s. Younger players just count backwards. If they cannot, they fail.
-----------
Ability to retain new memories - Ask them to remember 3 random words (e.g., apple, car, Cleveland). If they cannot, they fail.
--------------------
Each year, several players in various
sports die after second-impact concussions. The second-impact doesn't have to be the same day as the last concussion, or even the same week.
---------------------------
Apparently, as long as the player is unable to perform each of these types of tests, there is still some brain injury which needs healing. So there is a danger of making the condition worse if they get another head injury after the first.
-------------
If you suffer from any of the below see a doctor and a neurologist.
Watch out for nausea, dizziness, headaches, confusion, sensitivity to light, erratic behavior or there vision changes in some other way. They should see a doctor and or neurologist.
Maybe even a trip to emergency on a knock out injury for a catscan to check for bleeding under the skull which can kill you.
---------
Don't want to scare you but always play it safe so you won't be sorry.

I get headaches too. If I don't have to, I don't head the ball (although as a rec player, it is more optional than in a competitive environment). When you do, try to use the right technique. Hit the ball with your forehead with force, and tighten the neck muscles so that your head is driving the ball and not the other way around. Getting hit on the side of the head is bad.

You can't be injured by heading if you have correct technique, so that's what you need to practice. Wrong area of contact and it's gonna HURT!

Learn how to head the ball. Or just how to do a bicycle kick as a really good alternative. No aspirin, huh? Then howabout Morphene?
