Just for clarification - his words were:
Max Bretos
"This is NY!. Technically we're in NJ. Speaking of which in attendance today is the Borough Boys who are pushing to get that second team in Major league soccer, they have the approval of Don Garber. I was told by some of them earlier that if there's a 19th team, the cut off is 18 but if there's a 19th comes to NY in one of the bourugs the commissioner is all for it, time will tell..... another team in new york would obviously cause a good rivalry for the red bulls..."

st louis and portland, to me, should be 17 and 18... NYC and montreal come in to fill up to 20.

Nah - dont worry about 18 or 19 - I think that no matter what number it is - the league would do it if the right deal came into place! IMO of course ;)

I hope for 2011 - I think right now we have to wait until the All star game - im sure they will bring up expansion then! I beleive that is when they will announce St. Louis as 17!

20 teams is not too large for a continental league, especially one that includes Canadian teams. We are not a European country barely the size of Texas.

People need to understand what the commish wants and what the realities are, are two different things. Bretos is passing on the company line, MLS is more than open to antother team in NYC, they really always have been. But the problem isn't whether MLS wants another NYC team, the problem is there being a workable solution for another NYC team.
I think these anouncers pick up on these stories and really dont understand the larger issue, which sucks for NYC fans hoping for another team, because it sort of puts this false hope in their eyes.
If local ownership efforts and land use stadium rights are worked out then i think it happens, but Bretos and others in the blogshpere nned to do a better job on their due dilligence in reporting this stuff.
Every other proposed expansion site has at least some ownership/stadium situation that is workabkle, expect maybe Vancover because of the political resistance to their plans. St.Louis has the stadium plans and is working on a broader ownership base with more standing capital. Montreal has it all, a stadium that is easily expandable and a huge money ownership, Portland has the fanbase, the market footprint, and a stadium conversion plan, they just need richer ownership to step up, the other markets i am not sure their situation (Atlanta, Miami, Vancouver, etc.)
Bottomline it is not the league NYC2 hopefuls should be concerned about, its the city and the stadium solution. If that cant be worked out, then it really doesn't matter how gung ho MLS is about wanting another team here.

I agree - its almost like false hope - but to his defence - Max was reporting what he spoke about with us! And im sure he has to run what he is going to say through some kind of league official during the telecast
But you are right - listen - they have talked about a second team in the City for ever - and a lot of people are waiting for it, stop talking and just do it - it just seems like with the 2010 mark coming up - it seems like soon is the right time.
Its all a stadium deal - thats what Wilpon or any investor needs to present - Investor [Check], LEague [check] - just stadium, the City supports the idea but they would not foot the bill for another stadium!
Although WIlpon has shown he is better with building a stadium than the Bronx being they just had to ask the city for 400 million more!

We know what's going on onion. First, in fairness to Bretos, he said "the borough boys said...." That's because that's what we talked to him about at half time. So he was only reporting, I suspect, what we told him, which I think he made clear.
Second, we gave him this information because it's what WE KNOW. And we know it because we are in the loop between the city and the league.
Third, you are absolutely right. the commish wants it, and investors want it. What the city will let us do is another matter, and, as Max said, time will tell. But to get community support, which is the missing link between now and shovels in the ground, it is not a bad thing to be creating hope that it will happen. This in the end is political, it's not financial. So we need to create buzz and community support. We did something small, but positive, by getting Bretos to talk about it on a nationally televised game, which is why we went to the game.

Agreed, but it's not just the cost of the stadium, I think the bigger issue is where to put it, and what kind of a fight would the community put up.

At this point I think that it would be best to get behind a particular location and pitch it to the people. Raise awareness that something potentially is in the works and can be accomplished if the community is behind it.

yeah, I think some people, some (not all) ESCers for sure, want to see this as providing false hope, as if they care so much about our feelings. But they're not concerned about our feelings. They worry about the competition for supporters club members, and may even be a little jealous that we are actively doing something about creating the team, while they have sat passively by while they have been largely ignored by their owners and management teams. The fact is publicity IS A GOOD THING for a NYC team.
