Crazy things happen when you stand to close to a player when they get carded. Especially when it's a red. Isolate them, but stay at least 2 yards away. It'll give you a chance to defend yourself if they snap.

The article says the player was sent off for "unsportsmanlike like conduct" which we know can't be true.
I've had players spit in my face (teammate of the send off after the game) and another time a player threatened to beat me up but was held back by his teammates when I pointed out that he would go to jail if he touched me.
I also had a game where I called a PK and wasn't able to run to the goal line because the players were blocking my path. I was a couple yards outside the top of the D. I then saw one of the defenders start running at me. He was about 6'2" and a solid 200 lbs. I thought I was dead. Instead of hitting me, he ran past me and I heard a thud behind me. Come to find out, a forward from his team didn't like the call and was running at me from the center line. The defender wanted to keep playing the game and tackled him before he got to me. Technically I could have sent off the defender for VC against his teammate, but heck he was looking out for me so I kept him in the game, ignored the incident and lined up to take the PK. Eventually the forward got sent off for yelling at the top of his lungs "F**k Off Referee!" after another call. I made sure I was about 20 yards away when I showed the card.
Anyone else had a crazy come after them after they were sent off?
