holland decided to do an argentina 2006 impersonation.
peak too early and crash in the QF .
New tournament, same old Netherlands. If anything, the Argentines were doing a Netherlands impression in 06.

EURO 2000 is regarded by many to be the best EURO.
Mexico 86 is my all-time favorite international tournament since I've been following the sport.
But this one is certainly gaining ground with four more matches to play.
Didn't say the best, said one of the best. I've only been watching them since Euro 1984.
This is pretty close to Euro 2000, IMO.

What a UPSET:eek:
Given the fact that EVERY group winner has lost...
I dont think we should be calling these upsets anymore...

Today we could see yet again that the games from the group phase don't matter at all when it comes to the knockout phase as these games start from scratch and during the regular playing time anything can happen
edit: Moreover I come to the conclusion that a setback during the group phase like a lucky draw or a deserved loss can indeed be helpful for the development of a squad during the progress in a tournament

Back when it was becoming clear that the groups could all be won before the final matchday of the group stage, I was wondering if it was really a good idea to rest most of your starters for the third game. I can say now that it looks to be the wrong thing to do.

Beat with our own weapons,, Hiddink knew how to beat us.
Well deserved win for Russia, Holland didn't deserve to go through after such a gutless performance.. They returned to the Holland we saw in qualification--> non-inspired play.

nope, typical Holland. Arrogant attitude, no spirit and mental weakness. Same choking as everytime.

What a revenge for Russia! In Euro 88, van Basten buried Russia and won championship. Now it's a payback time. Hiddink has the biggest credit to turn a young talented Russian team into a world beater.

But the question is what is the cause of these upsets? Could it be either...
1) Favorite teams get over-confident to the point where they don't come out with the same intensity of the underdog.
2) Resting starters in the third group game for teams that were already qualified broke their momentum and pace of play?
3) Tactical victory of one coach over the other
4) The "nothing to lose" mentality allows underdog to play better

Who is really surprised? After Russia dispatched the Swedes that easily, I said, "These guys are going to beat the Dutch." Why? Because it is the Dutch. They do this almost every time. A bad defense will eventually be exposed, but it will always happen.

This loss hurts, but it was not cruel. Holland didn't show up, in the worst possible match. Never once during the match did Holland look like they were winning. Now I wished that RVN did not score when he did, so that Holland's misery would just end after 90 minutes. They never look good at all, not once.

The Dutch are the Dutch, however, they had never played this well in group play so people had a feeling this tournament might be different.
