"
influenced the final score with his mistakes (not calling a foul on P. Ferreira by Ballack). How many games on this Euro have been in part determined by the referee?"

all of them :)

poor Portugal - always great attacking flair, but so so defenders and terrible goalkeepers...

Four thoughts:

(1) Good on ya, Germany. With Portugal out, it'll be a much more enjoyable finish to what's been a brilliant Euro so far.

(2) Dive, dive, dive! Both teams...and surprisingly, the Germans (imho) were the worse offenders.

(3) Lehmann mentioned to the press that Germany were adopting Arsenal's plan to stop Ronaldo. I've always felt Arsenal did as good a job as any vs. him, and while he had a few dangerous moments - any player his quality will - he was never close to taking over the game like he can.

(4) With all the pushing and shoving that goes on for every single corner kick / set piece, I don't at all think that was a real foul on Ballack's goal. It just struck me as typical "stir-up-controversy" antics from the commentators.

could this year be a repeat of 2002 for Ballack ??

No, because he can't get a second yellow in the semis :D

Great Job by the refs Taking away an onside Goal from Portugal (with only one replay) and disregarding the Push on Ferreira that always gets called every game, except today. Love how the commentators stated it was "just a little nudge" of course because it's against Portugal it's ok to put two hands on a defenders back who is jumping to head and then shove, yeah " A little Nudge"

Full credit to the first 2 German goals but this game was heavily dictated by the refs.

I also noticed a nice grab and hold on Nuno Gomes in the first half in the Box while he was close to the ball that was conveniently not called and had no replays.

Good Luck to Germany for the rest of the Tournament although if the reffing goes like that for them who needs luck?

Referee decisions always go two ways. Hitz was called offside when he wasn't and there were a couple of "minor" decisions that went Portugal's way. All in all, it was a hard fought match, with Germany slightly ahead.

not to mention cover for Lahm and a platform for schweiny

funny how if you field a proper formation things work better :D

but players still have to play.

Notice how everyone was instantly moving from the kickoff and touches and passes were crisp?

austria and croatia were static-fests

You can sit here and say that the refs were terrible but in reality they weren't that bad. Yes they got some calls wrong but you can't expect a ref to call every push in the back or every offsides correctly (and even if nuno wasn't called on that offsides he would not have scored he only scored cuz the keeper stopped playing after the whistle)

THE PROBLEM WAS THE WORST COACHING IVE EVER SEEN. PERIOD.

lets see before the game scolari tells his players not to give up corners and free kicks near the box. how about just playing the right players so you don't have to play knowing you have a weakness?????

PETIT- useless at his height, he was out there just hacking the germans, not even playing for the ball.

GOMES- too small, he got pushed and physically out muscled everytime there was a free ball, he did get a goal but he got it the only way nuno gomes ever gets goals, but scooping up a rebound off of someone else's shot.

RONALDO- what a baby, he wasn't getting the ball enough in the first half (which was the teams fault for continually going to the right where simao was up against lahm, instead of attacking up the left with ronaldo) so he starts drifting into the middle and refusing to run back and help out ferreira which everyone knows is our weakest spot in defense. Ronaldo also was responsible for marking klose on that corner.

RICARDO - if you're gong to come off your line, you better make contact with the ball. simple rule.

THEN THE SUBS

Meireles- nothing we could do here, like for like since moutinho got hurt.

Nani - hrmm, so gomes is small and not getting it done so another small player up top will help? well luckily cuz nani has pure skill he was able to create some chances.

Postiga -he's a clutch player, i thought this was a good sub but it should have been a sub for a tired Almeida.

ALMEIDA - should have started, amazing season in germany, you can't muscle him off the ball, great in the air and would be able to come back and help guard on set pieces.

MEIRA - another big defensive player, he showed he could fill Petit's role in the game against Finland. I mean who would be better to stop "the hammer" than Stuttgard's captain???!!!

ALVES- Bruno alves is amazing in the air, physical and tall. Could also have been an option.

--------------------------------
Scolari's logic is 'i dont change a winning team' well in the knock out stages you dont get to lose and then change up your team and make corrections for the next game, there is no next game.

I feel so bad for all the players who worked so hard to get there. We showed that we have much more skill than the germans but we still don't play fully like a team, and that we were simply out coached with the wrong game plan.

THANK GOD SCOLARI IS GONE!!!!!

I like the scene when Friedrich fouled Ronaldo and deliberately stepped on his foot.
The ref didn't see it, of course (or didn't want to see), but I enjoyed this scene very much :D

Congrats to the Germans, marvelous tactics, the good old fighting spirit, will, discipline, in fact all what Germans made strong through football history, they showed again.

Portugal couldn't compete physically, but this is also a part of the game, not only technique. And Portugal's defense was disastrous. A team which want become European champion must not have such huge deficits.

I still don't think (as wrote already before) that Germany is a special gifted team or has much talent. But they are compact, well organized, self-confident, goal oriented.
Nonetheless, they have weaknesses, but there are very few teams capable to reveal it, Portugal isn't one of them. I hope that Croatia advances to the semis and shows again how Germany can be beaten :)

Some great dribbling from Ballack to beat two players in a row. Nice.

ballack's dribbling was far more effective than c.ronaldo's today.

There are a lot of different ways to play football, but at the end of the day the only thing that matters is who can score more goals than their opponents.
