Hopefully Spain can finally overcome their jinx and beat a sub par Italian team.
Would love to see Spain - Holland in the semi's. It'd be better than the final.

They haven't played well, I know, but Italy still has the talent to take Spain out, especially in the knockout rounds. I'm kind of surprised at the confidence that people have that Italy will go out that easily.

Not to cast a shadow on anyone's chances here.. but June 22nd is not a great day in Spanish football... they've gone out of the quarterfinals on penalties THREE times on this day...

Most comments I've seen either put the match into the "can't predict" category or assume that Italy will beat Spain, setting up a scary rematch with the Dutch.

I'm firmly in the "can't predict" camp, myself. It depends on which Spain team, and which Italy team, decide to show up.

Edit: Also, Italy is among that select group of teams (Germany, France, Argentina, Brazil) in which the words "knockout stage", "defeat", and "easy" should never be seen in the same sentence.

Good point. I think it's too close to call. Italy can show the magic they displayed in 06 and throughout qualifying (for the most part) or can continue the subpar-performance they have showed since this tournament began. It all depends.

pretty much interestin fact. but i think spain can cruise past the italians as pirlo and gattuso will miss the match and cannavaro is out of the tourney.

La Roja will win 2-0.
The italian defence is very bad without Canavaro and in they can score only from freekicks or penalties.
The spanish strikers are very fast and technicaly superior compared to the italians.

I'm pretty sure Italy will pass, just like I told everyone I know that Germany would kick Portugal out.

There's certain teams, like Italy and Germany, that no matter how bad they play, make it through.

For me the real "can't predict" match is Holland-Russia.

If I were Italy, I'd be far more worried about playing Russia or Croatia than about losing to Spain. I predict a wonderful Spain getting beaten 2-0 with 2 goals by Toni.

I always thought if Italy made it through to the knockouts, they'd make it to the final.

Wow. This time around I see an extremely difficult time beating Spain. We lost the player we needed most against a team like them (Cannavaro). Perhaps Buffon will play even better than he has been and stop everything. He is certainly capable, but the Spanish will certainly get their shots. This could really be a fantastic game.

Yes I remember those games like it was yesterday!!

Eloy from Sporting missed the only PK in Mexico (he never played again for the national team)

Hierro missed the first shot against England and it only got worse from there

Joaquin who was only 20 had to take that last PK because the senior players had already shat in their drawers and didn't have the cojones to stand up and take the last shot. Since then Joaquin's play has gone down to the point he's no longer on the national team.

Aupa Espanha y Viva Er Beti Manque Lopera!!

This is the problem... at this stage it all comes down to experience.. but I sure do hope that spain can kill off their ghosts and pull off a win here. Spain - Holland semifinal would be something else.

I hope Spain can get a win as well. And yeah, Spain - Netherlands would be great.

Holland SHOULD beat Russia. At this stage of a tournament, nothing is "certain."

No of course I'm not certain. Nothing is certain... however, out of all of the quarterfinal clashes, this one has the clearest favourite/underdog.

Just like you guys back Brazil? :p

Most Portuguese back Brasil due to our almost non-existant past in WC's, we love football so we have to back someone... This was never my thing, I never liked favorites so I allways (except Germany sometimes like in 1990) root for someone new.

Since Spain is our only neighbour, I'll root for them now that we are out.

Good luck

What about your neighbors to the west?
