Knockout stage matches always play 30 minutes of extra time at the end of 90 minutes (two 15 min halves). The Czech Rep - Turkey game was an exception because it was the group stages and both teams had identical records.
I knew that about knock out games. Smyth left me with the impression that UEFA had decided to do away with the mini games. I was surprised when he mentioned a game was going straight to PKs.

I'd do away with PKs as well and have them play until they drop dead. Of course, allowing for more subs (5 more) after 120 mins.

That's what they used to do 20+ years ago, without adding more subs.
IIRC, they started going direct to PKs in either the '86 or '90 World Cup, then added "golden goall" in '98 (or maybe Euro '96), then dropped "golden goal" in favor of two 15 minute extra time periods in '02.

This game reminds me of the Rumble in the Jungle, with Turkey being Ali and Croatia Foreman.
Yes, Jeremy. I remember how it was, although my first WC was Spain 1982. Before that, I was too little to understand lol.

Turkey has put a good deal of pressure on Croatia's defense in this 1st extra time period. Croatia look very tired. I am not so sure we will make it to penalties...

Croatia needs to use their last sub.

At this point Turkey has five yellows and three more players suspended for the semis, were they to make it, besides Volkan.
