Italy has 4 World Cup Championships to Germany's 3, but Germany has been more successful in the European Championships; Germany has 3 Euro titles to Italy's 1. Additionally Germany has been to the championship games in both the Euros (5 to 2) and World Cups (7 to 7) than Italy.

So which is the more successful team over the ages?

(7 to 6), not (7 to 7)

Overall Germany are probably slightly ahead because of more trophies and more consistent performances.

I may be a German backer, but the answer is clearly Germany with very little thought needed.

The Germans.

Germany is also the most succesful side in Euro championships, followed by the NL and France.

The Netherlands have scored the most goals in Euro championships and have taken less games than the Germans to outscore them :D

We're just not much of a cupfighter.

Really? got a source?

This is what I found (http://soccerlens.com/euro-2008-statistics/7632/):
These statistics do not include the EURO 2008 results so far, which means that the NL would be ranked 1 at this point.

Rank Nation P W D L F A Pts
1 Germany 32 15 10 7 45 32 55
2 Netherlands 28 14 8 6 45 28 50

Interestingly both have conceded exactly 1 goal per game (not including this tournament of course).

I would say Germany , I don't put as much stock on the first 2 Italian World Cups.
The holders Uruguay as well as almost all South American Countries didn't bother to show up. It was basically a European championship with Brasil added. Besides I would be leary about any final played at the Stadium of the National Fascist Party :D

Of course I am biased, so I show just the numbers:

Number of Major Titles:
Germany: 6 (3 WC /3 EC) Italy: 5 (4 WC /1 EC)

Appearances in a final:
Germany: 12 (7/5) Italy: 8 (6/2)

Appearances in a semifinal:
Germany: 17 (11/6) Italy: 12 (8/4)

Appearances in a QF/Second Group stage:
Germany: 22 (15 /7) Italy: 14 (9/5)

Successful qualifications for WC (Number of attempts)
Germany: 16(16) Italy: 16(17)

Successful qualifications for EURO (Number of attempts)
Germany: 10(11) Italy: 7(12)

Stats for WC
Germany:
Games: 92 with 5.75 games per tournament (highest value of all nations)
Victories: 56 Draws: 19 Losses: 17 190:112 goals 187 points (2.033 points per game)

Italy:
Games: 77 with 4.8125 games per tournament
Victories: 44 Draws: 19 Losses: 14 122:69 goals 151 points (1.96 points per game)

Stats for Euro (without 2008)

While I agree that Germany has the overall better record in these major tournaments combined, I find it interesting that Germany has NEVER beaten Italy in the WC. Italy has beaten Germany twice in SF, once in a final and they tied once in the second group stage in '78. If Germany was SOOOOO far better than Italy as many here say, then once in the history of the sport, they would have beaten them on the biggest stage. What Germany excels at is NEVER getting beat by a lesser team something that Italy has had problems with throughout their history. When it comes to the big matches vs the top opponents, I'd put Italy's history right up there with Germany.

must say that the 1970 semifinal was a "robbery" in several ways

Lusankya

Germany:
1954: beat Yugoslavia, Austria and Hungary
1958: beat Argentina, Yugoslavia
1966: beat Spain, Soviet Union
1970: beat England
1974: beat Netherlands
1982: beat Spain, France
1986: beat France
1990: beat Netherlands, England, Argentina
2006: beat Argentina at penalties and Portugal
17

Italy:
1934: beat Spain, Austria (I hate Mussolini, but not the italian team)
1938: beat Brazil, Hungary
1970: beat Germany
1978: beat Argentina, France
1982: beat Argentina, Brazil, Germany (very impressive)
1990: beat England
1994: beat Spain
2006: beat Czech Rep, Germany, France
15

feel free to add or subtract teams, because it's hard to evaluate which teams were big at the given time or maybe I just forget to add some teams :)

Why, because the Olympics with the National-Socialist party were so much more trustworthy?

I also assume you have mountains of evidence to support your nonsensical implications, right?
