View Full Version : Biased question on Colorado-TFC(R)

OK, I'm openly biased on this one, so I was hoping to get some neutral referee's take on what happened. There's no video at ColoradoRapids.com or MLSnet.com yet.

In the first half Colin Clark gets body checked into the sideboards by Marvell Wynne. No foul is called, play continues on while Clark is rolling on the ground in pain just over the sideline. Finally the ball goes out for a TFC goal kick while Clark is still down in pain.

The TFC goalkeeper motions towards Clark on the sideline, delaying the restart so the ref can get him treatment. The ref tells him to get on with the kick, after a back and forth the TFC keeper realizes the ref isn't going to allow Clark to get treatment he restarts the game and TFC goes on to almost score, resulting in a Rapids goal kick. At which point Clark is still down and the ref finally allows treatment. (Good thing because I expect the Rapids keeper wouldn't have restarted play otherwise.)

In between the TFC goal kick and the stoppage of play at the other end Rapids forward Tom McManus goes over to Colin Clark and tries to pull him onto the field, presumably so the ref would stop play for him to get treatment. Mind you he's doing this while the ball is live and TFC is on the attack.

I tried to keep the description as neutral as possible, but I'm sure my bias shows. Here's my bioased account fo what I thought should have happenend.

A. Wynne made no real attempt in playing the ball when boy checking Clark. I thought it was an obvious foul and possible yellow card.

B. What's the ref thinking not allowing Clark to get treatment once the play is stopped for the TFC kcik? Yes he's (barely) off the field on the sideline, but its the sideline opposite the benches and he's close enough to the edge that he could still affect a ball in play where he's laying, so its not like the trainers can do their work away from the field. Why should they have to wait until Colorado gets a restart?

C. Should McManus and.or Clark be carded for unsportsmanlike conduct for dragging Clark onto the field to try to get him treatment? I, obviously, think not, but I can see the argument for a card.

I doubt you'll ever see video that gets posted.

I can't imagine why the referee would not have stopped play when the TFC 'keeper pointed it out. Does Clark tend to embellish injuries? Sometimes I wish a referee would let Blanco stay down as long as he wants, just to teach him the danger of crying "wolf."

I can't speak to that without video.

Not that I can think of, he certainly doesn 't have the reputation of a diver like Blanco or Ruiz.

This is also the second time he's been body checked into the bards this season without a call. In the opening game against LA it happened, he picked up a slight concussion from it, and IIRC he was actually up faster from that hit than this one.

As you describe the play, I see no reason why, once the ball was out of play for the goal kick, the referee couldn't have held the restart for a few moments to see about the injured player.

On the foul or possible foul, get over it. It may or may not have been a foul, but that's not the real issue at hand - it's that a player was injured, but off the field, and when the ball was out of play, the ref forced the restart anyway. If the ref felt it was appropriate, time could have been added to compensate for the stoppage.

Fair enough, I admit my complaints about the lack of a foul is my bias showing through. ;)
