Worst free kick of the tournament?

So if someone is on a breakaway and the defender tackles him American football style, or if the defender catches the ball going into the goal, there should be nothing more than a penalty given?
For a bad tackle you could be sent off for serious foul play outside of DOGSO. The handball would be a yellow card anywhere else on the pitch if it was tactical.

one of fifa's poorest rules has ended this game as a contest:(
I agree too. I absolutely hate this rule. A penalty is a tough enough of a punishment but a penalty & a red card? It just goes ahead and hands the victory to the other team.
Italy have to keep their cool.. there may be a make up call coming.

Yowsa -- who is this Benzema chap?
That one man whirly gig just to blast a cross to no one was hilarious.

How about if for DOGSO the offending player (or the player who would be substituted in case of the keeper) moves to the technical area. If a goal is scored before play is next stopped then he is allowed back on. If no goal is scored then it becomes a red card. It could work for penalties and free kicks.

imho the card system is flawed, I would sooner we moved to penalty bins, and take a feather from rugby's hat, rugby is a game thats easy to spoil and take the piss, the referees have a weapon its called a penalty try, if footballers wish to carry out the actions you have mentioned then the other team should be rewarded with a goal.
The whole basis around the R&R system these days is to treat footballers like naughty kids, which is the wrong attitude, instead of punishing, the rules system should reward the other team.

The problem is time keeping. It is easy to waste time in football, whereas in both forms of Rugby the clock can be stopped so sin binnings become consistant.

Too bad.

Did the keeper get anything on it? Looked like he might have just got a fingertip.

He did. That would have bounced in off the post otherwise. Great save.

It could well be a "better" injury than his ligaments, which it first looked like.
