this has been brought up before. the league sort of it did it this year by having the Crew face the Galaxy in the opener, though obviously there was no Cup competition involved.
unfortunately, the idea is probably a big money loser, most fans wouldn't grasp the concept, it wouldn't get any tv time, and there's no neutral venue you could play it where any fans would come out, so there's a host of problems (and I've only mentioned a few) that goes along with the idea.
but i'm always up for more games!! :) if some prize money could be offered up for it, i'm sure the players might be interested as well.

We will always have the open cup to the end of the world.
Leagues come and go.
What costs more to run? A league like the MLS or the Open cup tournament?

And there are only 10 teams, so that really limits the excitement. if we ever get to 18 teams, then it would be cool.

Just open the regular MLS season with the MLS winner at the USOC winner. If the USOC winner was from the A-League or lower, just play the MLS winner at the USOC winner, where it might actually draw.
Not a bad idea. But, still, I think what was done this year on ABC (LA Galaxy at Columbus) was as good as we need. Given it was one of three games televised by ABC.
