Ahh yes, Andy Gray and his stupid comments. I don't deny that the handling non-call is debatable, but his comment of "anytime the ball hits an arm of a defender close to the net that is going toward the net is a penalty" is nonsense....utter nonsense. Can we please get this guy off the TV??

Hooray for Andy Gray's continued ignorance!
I didn't get a close enough look at the replay to really tell if the non-call was correct. It's really debatable.

I think it was one of those "Do pro players ALWAYS know where their arms are?" type calls. It seemed to me he did not stretch it out, it was more just hanging down behind his body when Henry blasts it at him from 4 yards away. Guess this is why FIFA referees get paid the big bucks :).
And can I just say, Holland is a lot of fun to watch!

I didn't see anything unnatural about the position of the defender's arms. Henry just blasted the ball into him, and the ball happened to hit his arm. I don't see how handling could be called in this case.

I think I'm leaning your way as well....just wonder if I could do it when I'm in the center :). I think the distance between Henry and the defender is the important factor here.

Hypothetical on first goal: if Kuyt doesn't put it in the net (or, perhaps a better example, doesn't reach the ball), that hold is enough for a penalty, right?
I'm almost asking this rhetorically, because I believe it is. And I think this is part of the point that FIFA & UEFA are rightly stressing. The hold (almost a bit of a hug, really), wasn't much. But it was enough to give Kuyt problems getting to the ball.
This is why we should be making these calls. A lot of people seem to complain that the jostling and holding in the box shouldn't result in PKs because it's either A) not that blatant or B) not affecting scoring opportunities. The truth is we don't know how many scoring opportunities are never developing in the first place. There's a reason the defenders hold and clutch to begin with.

I've always been amazed that offensive fouls are called in a 100:1 ratio to defensive fouls in the box on restarts.
I'm sure that there should be more defensive calls!

Maybe it wasn't a non-call. I think (although I haven't seen a replay of it) that it is quite possible the Ref's view was blocked from that angle and it was across the field from the AR. The ref didn't call it because he didn't see it.

Is this the same Andy Gray that usually commentates for Sky? If so, every referee here sympathises with you...

Yes.
Obviously UEFA has ordered a clamp down on the WWF-like tactics on restarts in the PA.
I say hooray.
Now we must have the cajones over here to call a spade a spade regardless of whether we get a missive from Chicago or not.

Dude!!!!
I was in the same incoming class as Mia and a large group that ended up as the core of the USWNT for many years (including China 1996) Julie was a couple years ahead I believe...can't say this thought hasn't run through my mind before.....
Although I continue to be upset at Julie's continuing references to the Panucci/Van N. offside call as being incorrect.
They did certainly do more with their football careers than I did with mine....

I've been waiting for ESPN360 to load the full match, but evidently they are having issues.
What happened on the strange free kick somewhere between the 60th and 70th minute where it looked like an opponent player got within two yards of the free kick before it was taken? Had the ball already been played? I was only watching with one eye and apparently I missed something, but I'm not sure what. Our man Andy Gray complained about it.

Well then, I believe one of your old teammates will be representing the Texas North referee delegation at regionals next week.

REALLY!!!! Actually my football career at UNC was of the American style as opposed to the global one (and rather short-lived) but I'm always happy to hear about successful Tarheels. Thanks for the tip...
