There really is no one outstanding player this tournament.
True, seveal players have really been like light swtches in that sense haven't they?
Ballack
Sneider
Deco
Arshavin
Senna
Cech
etc, etc....

It's been an odd tournament, just when you think a player is gonna shine he disappears and another steps up only to disappear himself.
Instead of naming a player I'll nominate the entire Turkey team. although I'm not a fan I have to admire their resilience.

I'll do one better; Germany
Really good against Poland
Outplayed and lost against Croatia
Mediocre against Austria
Awesome against Portugal
Disappointing yet efficient against Turkey
????????? against Spain

My options until now would be Lukas Podolski (Germany), Marcos Senna and David Villa (Spain), Andrei Arshavin (Russia) and Wesley Sneijder (Holland).
I also really like the tournament of Roman Pavlyuchenko and Yuriy Zhirkov (Russia), Luka Modric (Croatia), Artur Boruc (Poland), Carlos Marchena (Spain) and Edwin van der Sar (Holland), but I think they don't have a real opportunity to win.

I think that Ballack will get it as he's the established attacking player who has had the greatest international success over the past few years. He has played well, but was subpar during the Turkey game.
My vote goes to David Silva.
If he had made the final, I would have gone for Hamit Altintop.

Agreed, IMO that's the sign of a great tourney.
EDIT: One way to decide who's best is to see who performs best over the knockout.

Yup, and it has certainly been a great tournament. This is the way I like it. I would hate to have one player's ass kissed constantly and overshadow the rest of the tournament.
I think a player from the winning team will get it. Ballack if Germany wins it because he captain and maybe Xavi, Villa, Casillas or Silva if Spain wins it.

what's up Perú FC? :D
so far i think that there have been many good players, this euro didnt have that many stars before the competition, we werent expecting to see players like zidane, hagi, figo, but ronaldo, ballack, and that generation....
still i think that the goalkeepers did a huge job....
Lobont(ROMANIA), Van der Sar(Holland), Buffon (Italy), Akinfeev(Russia), ... and some good apearances of Casillas (Spain) and Boruc(Poland)
the best defender i think has been Chiellini from Italy, he played the best game a defender can play against Spain, other peoiple who deserve recognition are Hamit Altintop the best right back, even though thats not his original position, and Zhirkov, one of the best players so far.....
The best Defensive Midfielder has been Senna in Spain, and i also liked how Pirlo played this Euro, another one who plays a good Euro was Kolodin from Russia, and Memeth Aurelio from Turkey
In the midfield... i guess that Podolski was the best, another player who didnt play on his nataural position, Silva in Spain did a good job, Tuncay Sanli in Turkey, Arda Turan too, Saenko in Russia, Rakitic in Croatia, Sneijder in Holland, Amantidis in Greece
however there has been one player who played only 3 games, but was the best in this competition ARSHAVIN from Russia, and players like Van der Vart from Holland deserve a recognition too
The best striker, i dont know who that can be....Nihat, Senturk were interesting, Van Nistelrooy didnt play like in Real Madrid, but scored important goals, Pavlyuchenko, made the great duo attack with Arshavin, Kolse started improving in the second round, Villa played a good Euro, but he is now injured, and the one who really impressed a lot was Guiza....
my team for this Euro
-------------------Van der Sar ---------------------
--------------Chiellini--------Marchena--------------
---Altintop------------------------------Zhirkov-----
-------------------Senna---Aurelio-------------------
-----Nihat-------------------------------Arda Turan---
----------------------Arshavin------------------------
----------------------Pavlyunchenko-------------------

I'd also add Pranjic as a revelation ... and I was surprised by Niko Kovac who I thought was over the hill.
Another huge surprise for me was Libor Sionko for the Czechs.

To best goalkeeper I've clear my vote to Artur Boruc, I really like the performance of van der Sar, but the Polish was too solid in the phase of groups.
The best defender until now I think has been the unexpected Carlos Marchena, incredibly solid when the most, including me, always has considered him as an irregular defender. Next to him I'd put Tomás Ujfalusi, but Chiellini is also a good option. For the right-back I'd put Aleksandr Anyukov over Altintop, but the Turkish was really good too, and the left is definitely to Yuriy Zhirkov.
In the midfield, the defensive and best player until now of the tournament for me is Marcos Senna, has had an impressive tournament and has given to Spain the perfect equilibrium to its light midfield. For the left I'd put Podolski, I think he has been clearly the best player of this Germany and incredibly decisive to arrive at the final. I think if Germany will win, Podolski should be the MVP of his team and not Ballack. And for complete that, I'd put two organizers midfielders that maybe should share a same position like Wesley Sneijder and Luka Modric, but waiting about the final performance of Bastian Schweinsteiger and mentioning deservedly to Arda Turan, Rafael van der Vaart and Ivan Rakitic.
Arshavin definitely as the second striker and accompanying him the option between David Villa or Roman Pavlyuchenko, I would opt finally about the Spanish for being the topscorer until now.
Boruc; Marchena, Ujfalusi, Anyukov, Zhirkov; Senna, Modric, Sneijder, Podolski; Arshavin and Villa.
But the final match could change me some options.

well.... i think modric was good, but croatia is not the same team from the late 90's anymore.....
boruc had a sensational game with austria, but what about croatia? plus he only played 3 games, and i think that lobont from rumania had a better tournament...
podolski was a good player, but he played in a different position.... he really astonished me, and i never imagined that he was going to play a euro this way....
anyukov was a good right back, but altintop played incredible with germany, czech republic....
holland had a good team, and i think that if players like afellay, robben, and even van persie , sneijder would've become i guess the most valuable player in hollanad, and probably for this 2008 edition

I stand by it, Senna or Casillas should be crowned player of the tournament. Villa however will get it as he's topscorer.
Ballack shouldn't be anywhere near this, has played horribly apart from the Portugal game.

It's gonna be Senna or Casillas. Senna was probably the best player of the tournament, he was arguably the MoTM for every single game for Spain he played.
Casillas has a chance because he captained the winning team, only conceded twice, and for his performance in the penalties. But he really didn't have too much work to do besides the Italy game.

It's either Senna or Xavi, the two most consistent players for the team that won.

MOTT -- Senna with Xavi a close second - they both brought a lot, but different - but Senna with a bit more shown in this tournament.
Best players in "moments" of the tournament - Sneider, Arshavin, Nihat, Giovanni van B, Buffon, Cassillas, Zambrotta (I like the way he plays although he was mediocre), other Turkish players.

I agree, I don't think too many people knew of this guy before the tourney, but he put on a show that many knowledgeable football fans won't forget for awhile. He was a great destroyer, a skillful passer, he made Iniesta and Xavi game look so much better. Although the Spaniards had many other top performers but I think he was just a bit better then the rest.
