Regarding the whole tiredness thing, I just watched the replay of the game and there was no spacing and no movement when Germany were with the ball for the usual short passing game, but neither was there any effort to chase down the long passes. Basically they did nothing at all. Almost as if it was a plan to nick a win whilst using the least amount of energy possible in anticipation of a quarterfinal in three days.

yeah i would take Lahm over Ferreira but, Ferreira has actually been very solid so its not a huge deal, i was talking about defense as a whole though.

should be a great game.

I get it. Your defense on a whole has been better so far this tournament. The only solid mistake free performance from our defense was against Austria. I'm surprised at how solid Fereira has been at LB considering thats not his natural position. Maybe that'll help him stay at Chelsea since he is showing versaitility.

Anyways, good luck and may the best team win.

FR, what exactly is a "mistake-free" performance by a defense? Give me a good example of one because I don't think I've ever seen one.

Even defenses who "pitch shutouts" make mistakes in the course of the match.

How you cover those mistakes is the sign of a good defense.

Even last night was not "mistake-free", they just covered their mistakes well.

And as pathetic as Germany has been offensively, it won't take a defensive juggernaut to beat Germany.

Not being able to score a goal from the run of play against Austria when your tournament life is on the line??

Like I said last night, if I were Scolari, I wouldn't be worried about much if my team performs to its ability.

Löw had better call Klinsmann and get him to make a call to the team before that Portugal match.

Klinsi knew how to take the pressure off of that team.

I swear, last night if you put a piece of coal between every German players' butt-cheeks (except Lehmann and Lahm) you would have pulled out a diamond by the end of the night.

Well Germany deserved that win on an overall pretty bad game. We do not have any central midfielder to replace Ivanschitz so he had to play the whole time, despite the fact that he is way out of form. His free kicks and corners were abmisal - "planned" as one of our main strengths. The forward problem was pretty obvious as well.

Overall I am still happy with our perfomance, I think we were better than most people would have thought. There is still a long way to go thats for sure, most guys are pretty young and unexperienced so we should give them some time to learn on the international level.

footy, I have a feeling klinsmann will be making that call...either in private to players he is close to or at the request of loew to everyone

I was making a general statement more than anything. Mistake free as in covering them and not allowing defensive blunders to result in goals or big goal scoring chances.

I think if you guys can find another piece or two, you have a bright future.

The same goes for the Swiss.

OK. I understand that better. Thanks.

whatever it takes the good news is they finally stabilised their defense a solid defense a little destruction football and quick counter attacks might work well ag portugal this whole hit and rush football of loews and klinsmann never convinced me entireley that strategy lost us the italy game in 2006

That defense is far from "stable."

Don't tell me you're convinced because they shut out a team who didn't score from the run of play the entire group phase?

Yes, there is always hope, but it's funny how everyone forgets Euro 2000.......

And right now this German group reminds me more of that side than the 2002-2006 teams.

I do hope I'm wrong though.

Where do yu see that?

One question to German fans: Where would be Germany without Ballack (and Lahm)?

Between the Oder and the Maas.

Got to say I was pretty disappointed with the end result, after having gotten my hopes up in the first half. Not to take anything away from Ballack's classy goal, but I would've preferred to see Germany score the gamewinner in play; it just would've given me a sense of "closure", so to speak.

Now I just have to hope France, Serbia and Romania all follow Austria's example and start their ignonimous drop in quality, after which they'll join the likes of Mozambique, Tanzania, and Zimbabwe.

That was a ************ game. Nevertheless, it wouldn't surprise me if Germany would play much better against Portugal and actually pull of a win.

Where do yu see that?

In their attitude. If things aren't going 100% their way, they begin bickering and pointing fingers at one another.

Was I the only one who thought the referee was trying to be "the star of the show" for much of the match??

Great news - we now have a decent chance against Portugal since the man that determines all things football has clearly declared us the underdog for the next match. *sigh* I feel better already!!

Beckenbauer
'Do we have a chance with such a performance against Cristiano Ronaldo and his Portuguese side? No, definitely not!'

Yes, sarcasm is the key ingredient to this post.
