And now the Czechs must be really kicking themselves for allowing that late Quaresma goal

Thats why you should always try to rack up the score, show no mercy on your opponent cause you never know if GD will make the difference.

F_ck it if it sounds unsportsmanlike, football is war! ;)

Apparently. That would be historic. And crazy. Better than drawing lots, though, I guess.

Thank god it won't be a coin flip or something stupid like the average weight of the players mothers or something like that. Would love to see pks in the first round after 90 mins... would be just like old MLS days. :D

From Wikipedia:

Should two teams from the same group finish with an equal number of points, they will be ranked based on the following criteria:

Number of points earned in matches between the teams in question;
Goal difference in matches between the teams in question
(in cases where there are more than two teams equal on points);
Goals scored in matches between the teams in question
(in cases where there are more than two teams equal on points);

So Portugal losing 4-0 to Switzerland is irrelevent, and thus are group winners.

EDIT: Ah, you deleted your post. :o

The semis in Euro 1968 were decided on a coin flip. Can anyone elaborate on this scenario?

Czech-Turkey match will come out with a winner. It's a winner takes all match and I just do not think that either one of them will want to rely on penalties. It should be a mouth-watering match as these two teams seem very well-matched.

Except without the five second timer and the shooters running from midfield...those definitely were the days in MLS

And Yakin as well for missing that open sitter in the 34th minute... would have put Switzerland 2-0 up. :eek:

Yes you see you take a coin and flip it. One person calls heads, the other tails... if the coin lands with heads facing up, then the guy who called heads wins. If the coin lands with tails facing up, then the guy who called tails wins. ;)

Unless Jerome Bettis calls tails

Penalties (and the away goals rule) didn't come into play in UEFA competitions until the 1968/69 European club tournaments.
Prior to that, one-off matches that were level after 120 minutes were replayed, and if the replay produced another level scoreline, a coin toss decided the winner.
In the two-legged European club matches, if aggregate scores were level a third match playoff was played, usually at a neutral venue. If the playoff ended level, a coin toss decided the winner.

In the 1990 World Cup Holland and Ireland drew 1-1 in their last 1st round group match. They ended level on points, goal difference and goals scored.
Had this EURO rule been in place in the World Cup back then, they would've taken penalties to decide who finished second in the group behind England. Instead, FIFA drew lots and Ireland was awarded second place, which allowed them to play Romania while third-placed Holland faced eventual champions Germany.
If Holland had won the lot draw, they would've played Romania, then Italy, then Argentina in the semis (assuming they won each game, of course ;))...

So your saying we would have seen Romania in the final?! :p

Yes, they would.

I bet that both teams are going to practice pk's intensively during the next days...;)

Congrats to Turkey on the last-second winner in a very entertaining & thrilling game, I think they deserved the victory due to a good second half!

Pity for Switzerland to be already out, somehow they lacked fortune in this tournament. Well, they had the big chance to score the 2:1 just 5 minutes before the end of the game ... but if you miss such opportunities, you mostly get punished!
