He should skip the Olympics.
He should do whatever his coaches tell him.

If the Olympics are causing a problem in terms of getting a loan as the article implied, then obviously he should skip them. Michael Bradley isn't playing in the Olympics...

Is this true? I haven't read anything that says this!

Which is: Skip the Olympics.

It appears according to reports that the reason he is going to stay with Villareal -- if this is true -- is because he IS going to the Olympics. The idea is that he will report to Villareal, train, go to the Olympics, come back to Villareal and fight for time. If he gets it, great, if not, a mid-season loan will occur. Sounds like a fine plan to me.

I'd rather see him get loaned out to a lesser side, and then play nearly every match.

What happened to the Recreativo deal? That was nearly the ideal scenario, a loan deal to a relegation candidate in the first division with only a couple of established forwards. That's a realistic chance to break in, to get lots of sub-on time, possibly get to start after a while.
Staying at Villarreal realistically means a year in the reserves.

I read this article on Marca, the same magazine that says C Ronaldo is going to Real, and at first is just saying that it might be better if Jozy stayed with the first team from the beginning, that Jozy has to go the Olympics, and that MLS soccer is different, etc. But the last paragraph says that there are a lot of clubs interested in his services, they're probably having second thought about sending a player that will be in a starter from the beginning to another club. Right now they have 5 strikers but according to one the posters Jozy would be different from all of them because of his style and size. Nihat, G. Franco, Tomasson are the candidates to leave although Franco signed a one year extension less than a month ago, if one of them leaves the team Jozy might stay after all.

I would prefer Jozy be loaned out, if it means regular PT at an inferior club than sitting at Villarreal!!
As far as the Olympics, I would LOVE to see Jozy & Bradley go...if they don't, we're "toast" & I might not even bother watching it!!
And, yes, I do care about Olympic soccer & would like to see us do well!!

Well if they plan on selling one of their strikers (which would leave 4 still) I'd say that its probably a good thing that he isn't loaned out. In their minds they may be thinking it will be good for him to go to the Olympics and get good first team minutes vice spending time on the bench/reserve time.
If he doesn't move up to the #3 striker by the winter transfer window..he goes on loan to get first team minutes.

This is how I read it as well. (I'm not saying that this is what will happen, but I believe it is what Ives is saying will happen.)

It's also consistent with what Marca says.

Re: The Olympics, in a perfect world all of our best available talent would go, and we play the best we can and go as far as we can in that tournament. That would be ideal.
However, given other priorities, I'd just as soon hold Jozy out of it, IF it negatively impacts his club career in Spain. I would much rather Jozy be loaned out to Recreativo and attempt to make his way into that first 18. Starting/subbing-on regularly in La Liga will go a long, long way toward developing his confidence and understanding, and will go a long way toward an eventual break-through into Villarreal's squad. Having an American forward featuring in a Spanish side that competes for honors is something that the U.S. has never had, and the only thing that compares in my memory is Howard's half-season with Man Utd a couple years ago.

I think it would be better if Bradley doesn't go - he will be with a new club and it will give him an opportunity to establish himself and fight for a starting position. It will also provide a better platform for Edu and Szetela in the form of more Olympic playing time.
Similarly, if Altidore doesn't go it would be alright. McBride appears to want to go, and he'd perform comparatively to Altidore on the field and provide good leadership. It would also be a good international sendoff for McBride.
It would be much better for the players to join their club camps as soon as possible and get integrated rather than chase the Olympic dream. If they drag into camp late and tired, and end up on the bench behind other players with limited opportunities, then a year from now we'll be pulling into WC2010 and neither one of them will be in good position to contribute. We need them to earn spots, keep developing and be in good form heading into 2010.

the olympics suck, let's be honest with ourselves.
Jozy getting established at Villareal would pay much much much much much much much greater dividends for US Soccer then maybe getting another goal or two at the Olympics.
SKIP THE OLYMPICS ... it's a mickey mouse tournament anyway.

Disagree entirely. Medaling in the Olympics in soccer would rock.
Not only that. I also think it would give Altidore a bigger career boost than he would get from pre-season training (let's not forget that that is what we are talking about here) with Villarreal. In fact, I would wager that a break out performance in the Olympics would go further to getting Jozy on Villarreal's first team than would a stand-out pre-season camp performance with Villarreal.
Finally, it appears that Villarreal themselves think that the Olympic experience will be better for Jozy than camp time with Villarreal. That's why they appear to be willing to keep him with them and let him go to the Olympics rather than loaning him out and keeping him out of the Olympics.

Let's also not forget that the kid has been spending the entire year playing for the Red Bulls and as many as 3 different national teams (U-20, U-23, senior). There is already speculation that he might be tired. A few months of light duty at Villareal before a mid-season loan to a team where he'll play regularly wouldn't necessarily be the worst thing in the world. And if he can crack the striker rotation at Villareal, even better.

agree, it would rock. But in the grand scheme of things, it's not really something a lot of other nations take super seriously, so while cool, it might not be the highest of priorities.

In terms of his perception, yes, a great Olympics would be a great career boost. In terms of actually getting on the field, it's conventional wisdom that playing with your teammates and getting to know both the system and the players is much more vital than having a good "rep." Getting on the first team in real soccer countries has to do with performance on the practice pitch and in the time you do see, not based so much on your reputation (at least for most managers). Even genuine stars get benched if they aren't performing well on good teams, and I just can't see how the Olympics are going to help with learning your teammates and your new managers desires.
Finally, it appears that Villarreal themselves think that the Olympic experience will be better for Jozy than camp time with Villarreal. That's why they appear to be willing to keep him with them and let him go to the Olympics rather than loaning him out and keeping him out of the Olympics.
I don't really think you're interpreting this correctly, though what do i know? It just seems like a more naive view to me. Any team is going to prefer you at camp rather than training with a bunch of guys who you're not going to play with for them. They get control, they get to teach you what they want, and it's not like the world's U23's are a significant step up from Villa's skill level, so the level of competition won't be a great factor I'd think either. And what team is going to take a guy on loan who's going to miss a significant part of preseason training? I don't think you're gonna get a bunch of teams jumping to take that on. If he stays at Villa, he's most likely gonna be with the reserves I'm afraid.
My vote: take the long term view and skip the Olympics.
