What if the defender is not behind the goal line but RIGHT ON the goal line?
What if Buffon fouled him and he got injured right on the goal line and Holland decided to play on.

Well, but he's out of the pitch and this stupid FIFA rule says that he then counts as last man, if he lies on the sideline behind the goal, so the Ref's decision was absolutely right.

Also, it was right for the Netherlands to play on as it was no problem for the doctors to see after him as they would not affect the other players ability to score.

Bad Luck.

You cant just jump behind the goalline and then play the offside trap.
Sorry, if that was possible we'd have entire teams hopping across the line on every play.

This figures though, I knew the Italians would find something to blame their loss on.
Even without that goal we still win 2-0, and we still PWND you.

Nice try though

It is debatable whether or not he was offside, but everyone admits that we deserved to lose and were outplayed.

Secondly, you're an f-cking dick for acting the way you are, trust me that your team will be shut out of another championship like always.

Yea seriously, I haven't seen one Italian fan discrediting the Dutch win. Take your win and be humble about it.

It's onside: these things happen.

If anything is unfair, it would be disallowing the goal rather than letting it count.

I know we will, I never said we would win the Euro.
So long as we make the Semi's I'll be happy.

And I wasnt trying to be a dick, I just find this whole thread unneccessary and a pathetic attempt to put a damper on our victory.

(Also I was pretty drunk when I wrote that...lol, sorry if I sounded like a dick ;) )

Why be humble ???

Dutch have learned to milk a win when they can because they don't know when their next one is coming.:D

I expect friday.

I don't expect the same humbling scoreline against the World Cup runner up, but I expect us to win.

We're not milking it. We're just positively surprised. And we know that 90% of Italy thought they'd cruise to 3 points against us. Whoopsie :D

Well we expect Netherlands to win too and are relying on it.
As a matter of fact if you run the table a tie and a win is good enough for us.

Was this before or after you had to dust off the rule book from your attic.

So easy to say after the fact...how do you expect the players to know?

Before and after.

An Italian took his own guy out, and instead of getting up and playing on, he was laying down like he was injured. He played the rest of the game. Fair goal, dont like it, dont lay around injured.

If it was offside then every player would start hopping over bylines "injured" just to get get goals disallowed.
It would make a mockery of the game

Funny how the English commentator didn't see it this way nor did the 3 panel members from my sports provider.

Like I said ....it had to be dug out of the archives. I still believe the linesman didn't even include the injured player. Why wasn't this explained on the field instead of the day after.

This analysis is getting tired. It's controversial whether he was on or off. But I don't like when people are saying the linesman called it ight. He didnt even come out with his explanation until he probably dug it out of his own archives to find a justification because there was no word from the referee or linesman about it at the time. To be honest, I think he just mis-called it and found a nice justification for it later.

Anyway, it's over. The goal counted. Regardless of how brillant any of us BigSoccer analysts' explanations would be for the goal to count or not, it doesn't matter...

Simple Rule: Offside.

The attacker must be level with the last defender on the field of play.

on the field of play.

on the field of play.

on the field of play.

on the field of play.

Panucci was OFF the field of play, as he was out of bounds.

Panucci was OFF the field of play, as he was out of bounds.

Panucci was OFF the field of play, as he was out of bounds.

Panucci was OFF the field of play, as he was out of bounds.

Now, if he walked off the field on his own BY MISTAKE and immediately got up, and back up, he is in play.

But by being hurt (well, this is the Italians...), he was OFF the field of play.

SO...

By laws of the game.

Offside.

End of controversy, the ref was wrong., and Tommy is an idiot.

Law 11 says: A player is not in an offside position if:
* he is in his own half of the field
* he is level with the second last opponent
* he is level with the last two opponents

Where does it say "on the field of play"?
